Beth and Loki - secret passage
Beth practically jumped at the sound of the door slamming shut behind them. She kept close to Loki as they continued down the passage, eyes searching the darkness around them for anything out of place. Or, really, anything that might be the cause of that mysterious knocking sound (and wasn't that a mystery she didn't quite want solved?). She wasn't necessarily scared, but she'd be lying if she said the passage didn't spook her just a little.
"Oh," she said, considering his question. "I don't know. Usually, there's storage spaces, where people keep stuff they don't want to get rid of, but don't really want either…" They'd had such a space under the stairs at the farmhouse, but that seemed such a long time ago that she couldn't remember what they'd ever kept in there. Had she really ever owned so many things that she'd needed a whole room to keep them?
The dark corridor extended for what seemed an indeterminable distance. It seemed much longer than the stairs above, and its walls seemed to be slatted, insulation poking out here and there. She tried not think about what might live in such a secret passageway. But every now and then, she thought she heard the sounds of mice in the walls, or her hand brushed a cobweb of what was probably a very large spider.
After a few minutes, they came to a point where the passage seemed to fork off into two directions. One continued on in the direction they had been going, and the other veered off to the left.
"Guess they're not keeping their Christmas decorations down here. What do you think?"
