"Still, it's worth a shot - if it changes that quickly, like some bizarre shifting maze, then it's still a better option than going back that way." Stated with a jerk of his thumb toward the thick of the woods, and he agreed - no wandering into an even worst pit of doom than one they could potentially be walking into.
Whatever found them, it was coming. And he doubted it was friendly.
"Time to play hide and go seek...or actually, we should be doing the hiding." Maybe if they laid low, they could get the jump on it instead of trying to outrun it on a fruitless path.
