Maybe part of the reason why Peeta had been so stubborn about it at first was because he'd said what he thought it was, so it had to be that. And maybe he'd also been clinging to the one sense of normalcy he had, making bread and working with food that wasn't made out of people.
Even though he'd been expecting a test or inspection of some kind, Peeta still was startled by the noise, frowning slightly as he watched the Doctor work. And everything he said once the noise stopped was... kind of confusing. What was the device sure about?
"What's interesting?" Peeta looked at the chicken, frowning slightly. "Don't you want to test the beef and lamb? Or the fish?" Wasn't he going to be informed of the results?
