He had expected one of two things to happen: the incompetent agent would tell him that there was no change and he would return to his guard duties, or he would be given a new order set. He had not expected the incompetent agent not to know him. It wasn't even egotistical; people did not forget men with metal arms, because they happened to be relatively few in number.
And nobody forgot the asset, called Agent Barnes or something else.
He stood his ground, staring at the incompetent agent who was clearly not the incompetent agent. There would have been no reason for HYDRA to wipe the incompetent agent. Agent Barnes did not take this to be a good sign.
"You are not the agent responsible for my orders?" he asked, keeping his voice calm and collected. If he needed to shoot, he would be ready to draw at a moment's notice. Even with orders not to shoot, there were exceptions, and Agent Barnes knew he would always be able to defend the decision to shoot. Self-defence of an asset was even a good reason, in the right circumstances.
