Peeta couldn't help but feel bad at her clear reaction to what he'd said. He hadn't meant to be harsh or to ruin her mood, but he didn't think he could've helped it.
"It's okay," he said simply, more in response to the fact that she'd felt the need to apologize and less to what she'd said. He was sorry he'd had to live like that, too, but there was nothing he could do about it now.
He offered her a smile, hoping they could still turn the conversation around. "If we have to be here, at least we have cinnamon rolls and cupcakes, right? And those cookies you mentioned. Those sound great."
