Once they'd started rounding people up, the spirit inhabiting Beth's body decided to keep a low profile; she'd spent far too long being dead on the other side and reliving the moments before her death to be caught and locked up again. She'd rightfully stolen this body, it should be hers to keep! It seemed not everyone else shared her opinion. She'd spent the first day eating and partying, reveling in everything she hadn't been able to do since before she'd died, but when they started taking people, and after the second time someone called her a name she didin't recognize, she knew it was time to disappear. The clerk at the desk in the hotel very kindly provided her an empty room (well, she might have had to threaten him first), put under her real name, not the one everyone kept calling her, and hid out there for a couple days.
After that, she thought the coast was mostly clear. Surely they should have gotten everyone they wanted by then. She could go and do whatever she wanted. And even if they did decide to try and take her, she thought she could handle them. She just needed to find a gun. That would keep her safe enough. If she wounded one of them, they'd know she was dangerous, and maybe they'd leave her alone.
First, she had to find a gun. The sheriff's station ought to have one, she thought, and if she just acted normal, maybe like she wanted to help, then it should be easy, right? But, she'd never willingly walked into a police station, and so was apprehensive when she approached, but stayed calm and collected, at least on the outside.
