Hansel made a point of assessing the building, the room, the entrances and exits and the people. He wasn't comfortable at the best of times in these kinds of places, even less so when he didn't feel himself.
The lucky thing was that Gretel could do the talking, Hansel just had to stand there, take direction where needed and then research whatever these people were trying to find out about. He didn't want to interact and he didn't need to.
