A good surprise? Hell, most everything about that island was spit-in-your-face-kick-you-in-the-nuts awful...except for one thing. And that one good thing was sitting right next to him.
"Yeah," Sawyer said, looking at her for probably too long. "Yeah, all good surprises, Freckles. Cake and ice cream every single day, except for taco Tuesdays. That's when we had churros."
He could tell her about the sex, how really she was the first and only woman he ever really loved, but hell. This was a chance to start over. Maybe they'd get it right this time.
"We're not stuck anywhere," Sawyer said cagily, signalling for another drink. The bartender filled him up and made to put the bottle away but Sawyer stopped him. "Leave the bottle."
Turning to Kate, he continued. "I am. You were on your way to civilization, leaving craphole island for good. I had hoped...God, Kate. I still hope that's true...somewhere at least."
