WHAT: After this, Lavellan realizes he needs to own up to a few things.
WARNINGS: Probably a lot of shmoop.
STATUS: Completed.
Lavellan had meant to go back to sleep. Really, he had. But he was far too nervous for it now. This was almost funny, wasn't it? He'd faced a would-be god and its dragon without flinching, but the idea of laying his heart bear made him want to hide behind something.
When he was certain sleep wouldn't come, the elf sat upright among the nest of blankets Dorian had arranged. He pulled off the amulet that had hung around his neck, turning it over with shaky hands. The chain was well-worn and flecked with rust, clearly cheap to produce, though he knew the merchant had charged far more for it than necessary. It was the stone that was truly valuable, a deep green that reminded him of the overgrown wilds of the Planasene. Lavellan smiled a bit at the memory of Ellana eagerly pressing the amulet into his hands, flushed with happiness and no small amount of pride. It had been a good find, and the Keeper was pleased. She would be chosen as the First in a ceremony that night, and she wanted him to look after the amulet for her.
"And what if I lose it?" He'd said, which had apparently been the wrong response. She'd cuffed him for it, and they'd both laughed.
"You won't, brother." And just like that, the decision was made. He'd always thought his sister had given her trust too freely, but now he was beginning to understand that he gave his less. There were many people who cared about him, all people he'd held at a distance. A Keeper didn't protect their heart from the clan they loved, did they? If they never took any risks, the clan would fail. All this time, Lavellan had feared for himself when he thought he'd feared for others.
The elf jerked back to the present when Florianne swatted a mug right off the landing. He winced a bit when it shattered on the entranceway floor, though his true opinion was given away by a grin. "You're very efficient, da'len," he said, coaxing the cat foreword with a bit of the charred meat Dorian had left.
More brooding could wait for the moment. He had many confessions to make tonight, and not all of them would be easy. Dorian trusted him. Could he trust Dorian?
