Hawke didn't give every staff he made to Owen. There was one he made special and balanced himself. Only a mage knew how to make a staff for another mage, no matter what vendors in High Town claimed. No weaponsmith could understand how the staff needed to be an extension of the mage's magic and casting because they couldn't feel it, no like a mage could. Hawke favored his staff because it felt natural to send his mana through it, to cast spells with its movements and whip it around his head while fire blazed from the point.
The one he saved was for his apprentice and based on a design that Bethany had favored. He still cursed this land that it kept him from finding the means to enchant the staff fully so that Emma could have one to throw fire, though he thought spirit would favor her more. It didn't matter since he couldn't find the stones and lyrium to make the correct type but it frustrated him. An apprentice should have a good staff to learn with.
"Most mages don't know how to fight up close with an enemy," he said as he slung his staff across his bare shoulders and draped his hands along it. He wouldn't wear his armor for these first basic lessons. So, he was comfortably shirtless, barefoot and in jeans. He quite liked that modern clothing item. "Most mages kill their attackers before they get close because if they get close the mage is dead. My father thought this was ridiculous and taught me to fight in a Tevinter style: up close and deadly. I'm also going to teach you this how to cast and fight at the same time."
He shifted his staff to one shoulder and picked up the elegantly carved and decorated with dinosaur leather staff he had made for her. "This should be weighted properly for you. If it isn't I can make adjustments tonight after you've tried it out. It's a gift, your first is always made by your teacher. The second I can teach you to make yourself if you want. You'll know more about how you like to fight and cast with it by then."
