House elves were not a favorite of Nikolas'. Though his family had used them for generations, just as most other pureblooded families did, he personally had never warmed to the idea. It wasn't that he felt badly about it. Generally it didn't occur to him that house elves might not like their part in life. As a matter of fact, it was their servile nature that rather disturbed him. Nikolas couldn't stand the way most of them seemed to simper over their masters, the eerie fact that they had to do anything that was commanded of them. Even at home, he tried to avoid the two Vaisey elves.
At Hogwarts, though, he'd realized they proved quite useful to one who did not always attend meals at the appointed times. And really, their eagerness to serve, at least in this case, was a boon.
"We can grab something and then head back to our dorms, if you want," he said as they walked, taking a quick right turn. "I guess we should probably talk more about all this, but there'll be time to do that."
