Who: Draco & Astoria
What: Astoria fulfills a promise she made
Where: Hogwarts Grounds
When: Saturday afternoon
Rating: TBA

Astoria had butterflies in her stomach. She'd racked her brain for ideas, and had finally latched onto one, but now she was afraid that the whole idea had been so built up in Draco's mind that it wouldn't really live up to expectations. She had scolded herself half a dozen times over it as well, and finally just gathered things up and made her plans.

She'd spent the hour she'd asked for making the last minute preparations she'd needed, and doing last minute checking that she wasn't actually breaking any school rules. The last thing she needed was some nosy professor ruining the afternoon. She wasn't entirely sure they'd approve, but she wasn't technically doing anything wrong. Just taking... liberties.

She waited in the courtyard, bundled up for the moment against the winter weather in her favorite coat, jeans and a soft, fuzzy sweater, her throat and face wrapped against the cold by a ridiculously long scarf that her favorite house elf had knitted for her a few years ago. It was, for Astoria, a rather casual look.

Draco wasn't sure what to expect from Astoria's surprise, but at the very least anything she could have thought of would be distraction from his other thoughts.

He could care less about who had knocked up Professor Tonks, or jilted her. He could care less about the five hour Quidditch match that was still being talked about in the common room. He was too busy waiting for Death Eaters to descend on the school like a scourge to really worry overmuch about anything. Waiting for his arm to burn, and to have to take up his role as Snape's spy, whatever that entailed.

Time with Astoria seemed like freedom, at least for a few hours.

He was impeccably dressed when he met her, black slacks and a turtleneck and warm sweater under his robes. She looked casual, and even approaching from behind he had no doubt it was her. He caught one end of her scarf as it flew in the winter air behind her, smiling, tucking it back around her throat as he came to face her.

"Hello, there. Fancy meeting you."

"Amazing coincidence," she agreed with a laugh, turning a warm, welcoming smile on him and letting herself look her fill of him. He really was strikingly good looking young man. She loved his eyes best, she decided. Or perhaps his hands. Or the smile that he seemed to only allow free reign around her. "You are looking remarkably well for a young man supposed only on the brink of losing his patience."

"Well, I'm rather good at pretending," Draco pointed out, his chin jutting up just a bit as he smirked. "Now, I'm led to believe there is some sort of surprising, waiting? It's been on my mind since last weekend, though I"m sure none of my ideas of what it might have been come close..." He cocked one eyebrow and then looked around. "I am not, I should point out, surprised yet."

Draco's teasing just made Astoria laugh. "Well I hardly am going to surprise you right in front of the school, now am I? " She cocked her head to the side, looking curious. "And just what sort of ideas did you come up with? I'll let you know if you came at all close.... "

"No, no." Draco shook his head, tsking at her and then offering her his arm. Usually he'd wait until they were away from the castle, but he was starting to wish Goyle would tell Pansy about it already, so he could be done with second guessing those things.

"If I tell you, it might ruin what you have planned. We wouldn't want that." And many of his ideas were, he was sure, very much off the mark.

Astoria snorted delicately, rolling her eyes a little. "Whatever you guess isn't going to change the plan any, it's too late for that. But telling me what you were guessing may give me ideas for next time," she said, laughing a little. "And I could certainly use ideas."

She led him out of the courtyard, and down towards the lake path. The lake didn't get much use in winter, really, other then a few attempts at ice skating, but it hadn't frozen thick enough for that yet. Which meant no one would be lurking about, and that worked out just fine for Astoria.

"We're going to the lake?" Draco asked, glad that her plan hadn't involved blindfolds of any sort to keep it a surprise, he was sure he wouldn't be quite as graceful as he liked to show with one of those on and the frozen grounds.

"I was walking here the other day, saw Midgen attempt something skating and fall on her ass."

"We're going by the lake," she corrected blithely, rather relishing her role as mysterious benefactor, grinning a little. "It's entirely too cold to be ON the lake and ice skating is hardly a surprise worth waiting a week for, I'd think." Well, some of the lake was thick enough then, but she'd evidently lucked out in scouting out the spot perfect for her plans.

"Ah, mysterious. Should I close my eyes and let you lead me?" Which he'd just been thinking was a relief not to have to do, of course, but she really did look to be enjoying this role - keeping him guessing, giving him something he wasn't expecting.

It was a good look on her.

She grinned and shook her head. "What, and when you tripped and fell over, leave me to feel horrified? I think not. You being able to see won't ruin the surprise any. I took precautions." She couldn't help a note of smugness in her voice as she said it too. It'd really taken a brilliant amount of charmwork for what had started out as a simple idea.

Once they got closer to the lake, she veered off the main path, making her way across. She'd obviously been out earlier as there was a path cut through the snow. She headed for a small grove of tall trees that stood sentinel by the lake shore and usually provided good shade in the summertime. They were bare and frost covered now though.

Draco had his suspicions that she'd been expecting him to write. "Would you have been writing me, if I hadn't decided to journal today? This looks as if I chose the perfect day for it...." And he was impressed at the preparation it must have taken, but found himself hoping she'd had help so that she wasn't here moving snow on her own.

"Oh, I'd have wrote you if you hadn't written in your journal. It could have worked today or tomorrow. There are two perfectly content house elves basking in the glow of a job well done after helping me rush about and put on the finishing touches this afternoon. It looks like they took care of the path for us as well, I had half expected to have to make you trudge through snow." You couldn't exactly give a house elf gifts for a job well done, but she'd be sure to praise them next time she saw them. Just because they were servants didn't mean you couldn't be properly appreciative when they did well.

"Hrm... no clothes for them, then." Draco wondered absently what would happen to the elves - and consequently to the cleaning and the feasts - when Snape and the Death Eaters were in charge of the school, but he'd told himself he wasn't going to think of those things tonight. Instead, he squeezed her arm, and let her lead him down the path that had been cleared.

When they got to the grove of trees, a large circle of snow had been cleared away, but it appeared empty. There was a glimmer of magic in the air however. Astoria, who was grinning giddily, took in a deep breath. "Now you don't see it..." she tugged on Draco's arm, making him take one, then two steps forward. There was the gentle tingle of passing a ward of some sort and then, once inside, the glamour dropped and Draco could see what was waiting for them. "Now you do!"

The grove was glowing with the soft warm color of fairy lights having been strung through the trees and branches. Their warm light reflected off of a round tented pavilion in the middle of the grove, the heavy material striped in dark green and golds, and one flap was secured back, giving a glimpse of a warm glow inside.

Draco looked surprised, pleased, and took his time looking around the little grove before he advanced to the small, tented pavillion to see what was still inside.

"You did all of this charms work yourself?" It would be impressive from anyone, but for fifth year? It was amazing.

She grinned. She would have liked to take all of the credit, really, but honesty prevented her from it. "Most of it. I had to go over the glamour ward a few dozen times and asked Daphne to show it to me, And the pavilion is Mother's, I had her owl it to me this week. All I had to do was say I was working on something for you and she sent it right away."

Inside the pavilion, like most wizarding tents, it was bigger then it appeared. It was, however, still just one room. In the middle, an elegant round stove glowed warmly, keeping the inside toasty against the chill outside and warming a tea kettle that was just starting to steam. A low table was set with what looked to be a generous picnic lunch, surrounded by plump cushions and piles of warm blankets to sit on rather then proper chairs. It made for a cozy, private setting for a surprise picnic in the middle of winter.

When she'd asked to meet in the afternoon, Draco had expected some sort of meal, if he was being honest. But he hadn't expected anything this elaborate, and the surprise did show on his face - it made him seem younger, somehow.

He moved into the pavillon, holding open the flap for her and then closing them against the cold. He could have cast a warming charm, but this seemed far cozier, somehow. "You really have outdone yourself," he said, and he wondered just where her parents would draw the line on their social climbing. What couldn't she ask for if it were for him?

She grinned as they moved into the tent, tugging off her jacket and scarf and draping them over the hooks hung on the wall by the entrance for just such a purpose. She laughed and looked a little chagrined. "I rather had to, really. By the time I figured out what I wanted to do, I'd teased you and built it up so much, I knew I had to do it on a grand scale or be doomed to disappoint you." She shrugged, brushing her hair back and giving him a knowing look. "And there was the additional challenge of really wanting to see you surprised. You aren't easy to surprise, really."

"Well, I'm from the future," Draco said ironically, rolling his eyes. "Not much that hasn't already happened to me." Even if he thought that was complete rubbish, and even if he couldn't remember anything from what he thought might be true. He took his time pulling off his heavy winter robes, laying them with her jacket and scarf.

She gave him a wry smile. "Okay, future boy, but admit it, I surprised you anyways." She slipped off her boots as well, a flash of lime green and purple striped socks on her feet as she walked over to the low table and sat down, indian style on one of the large cushions. "Now, let's see what's on the menu. I'm starving." She rummaged through the picnic hamper, laying things out with various enthusiastic reactions. "Oh, they remembered the... hmmm, these are my favorite...."

"The coconut cream pastries, or did the fill a basket full of strawberry sweets?" Draco asked it as he slipped off his own shoes and came to sit down beside her, long legs stretched out beside the table. He could have sat across from her, but what fun could that be?

He was unaware, for a moment, that he'd asked a question he shouldn't have possibly known to ask.

Astoria blinked slowly, but she didn't show any other reaction for a moment. She'd been thinking a lot about what Draco had said about his feelings of deja vu and how it'd faded for the most part, except around her.

She could test it, she supposed. She cleared her throat a little. "Hmm, that would be telling. Since future boy is being so good about guessing though, what's the date of our anniversary?" It was, really, a slim chance, really, that it would work. It would, if nothing else, possibly narrow down their theories about what had happened to him.

Draco looked confused for a moment, and then it cleared and his face was carefully blank, he looked down at his own hands. "I don't actually know about coconut cream pastries or your fixation on strawberry sweets, do I?" That wasn't his knowledge. And, oddly enough, that strange sense of doubling that he always felt when things like that happened... it hadn't come this time, either.

Astoria smiled gently and leaned over and kissed his cheek. "You can't blame a girl for trying, and really, this just saves me the trouble of training you up right to bring me strawberry sweets instead of icky chocolate. It's a win win situation all around," she said confidently, having already decided that treating his odd tendencies to know things he shouldn't in the most positive light possible.

Draco sighed, but relaxed at the quick kiss. It was worrisome, yes, that the feeling hadn't been there. If it wasn't, how would he know what was his to know and what came from that other, dual place? But if it only happened around her, he'd be safe enough.

"You might not have to train me at all," He said after a moment, clearing his throat and then smirking at her before he reached for the basket to start unpacking it. "I might even be housetrained."

She couldn't help it, she laughed. Draco's sense of humor might be dry, but it most definitely was there. "Hmmm, remind me to thank your mother then, at some point, for doing most of my work for me. It does make it so delightfully easy." The idea, of her, actually training Draco to do anything he didn't already want to do was most definitely giggle-worthy.

When everything was laid out on the short table, Draco sat the basket away. "They do overdo themselves at times, don't they?" The elves, he meant. There was enough there for a picnic of ten, rather than only the two of them.

And he found he would much rather watch her than eat, really, and leaned back a bit on the pillows he was taking up, resting himself on his elbows and looking up at her. "I don't pretend not to think that I'm perfect," he pointed out with that same smirk.

Even though desert should not come before the main meal, Astoria couldn't resist reaching over and grabbing one of the aforementioned pastries, biting into it with obvious relish and making a happy little sound and wriggle at the taste. They really were divine, and she licked the taste of sweet coconut from her lips slowly, and then gave him a coy look that was somewhat spoiled by her amused smile. "Very true. It's so refreshing too. Most of the other perfect boys I know, they're so annoyingly modest, and humble, it's quite frustrating."

"Those are the things which make their perfection a lie," Draco pointed out, and he smiled at her and then reached up, sitting up a bit so he wouldn't fall back, and running his thumb across her lower lip, catching the coconut that she hasn't licked away.

He smirked, then sucked his thumb clean of the taste before relaxing back again.

She couldn't help but roll her eyes a little bit at him, her laugh stuttered to a bit of a stop as his thumb was swept over her lower lip and she had the ridiculous urge to dart her tongue out at it. Which she refrained from doing, but just barely.

Draco smirked up at her from where he was reclining, and really, this was what he'd needed, just a few moments where she was there and he could stop worrying about Snape, and about what was coming next.

Should he tell her? Warn her?

No, not yet, he decided. Tonight, he only wanted to enjoy this date.
