Yesterday's Quidditch Match
It was a cold day, and still clouded and dark as the Quidditch teams took to the Pitch. But as the students had been starved for excitement since returning from Holidays, any bystander would have thought that the crowd couldn’t feel the chill at all. Though there had been some question as to whether or not Quidditch would continue, now that it was here students seemed able to forget the horror of the world outside the Pitch and focus, at least for a few hours, on the game.
The Slytherin team entered to hisses from three houses, and rousing cheers from their own, and Ravenclaw entered to the inverse - three houses cheering and the Slytherin stands looking up at them murderously.
It didn't seem to phase the Slytherin team, though, because as soon as the whistle from a shivering Madam Hooch began the game, the Slytherin team once again showed that the most expensive brooms on the market were so for a reason. They shifted into an almost confusing whirl in the air as they raced for positions and for the first goal of the game. Ravenclaw was able to answer, though, and within the first ten minutes of play the game was tied, and the teams were facing off and settling in to what would turn into the longest match of the year so far.
As the game wore on, a few things became clear. The most disheartening of those facts concerning the teams of Chasers for both teams. Slytherin's Chaser team had clearly won their last match for them against Gryffindor, but today they seemed off, and that could be clearly attributed to Chaser Harper. After fumbled balls and missed catches, it was clear even to the fans paying the least attention that something was clearly off with this third of the Slytherin Chasers. The team of Zabini and Vaisey did its best to balance out the problem of their third, but even that attempt was hindered by Chaser Harper's distraction. The Ravenclaw Chaser team, however, didn't seem to fare much better. Chaser Bradley took a bludger to the shoulder an hour into the game, and though he stayed on his broom and continued flying, it was clear after that he wasn't playing at his best. Chaser Brocklehurst seemed to counteract Bradley's playing, managing the majority of the team's goals.
Keepers Cornfoot and Urquhart were busy blocking quaffles at every turn. Into this fray, the startling good forces of both Beaters were put to the test. Ravenclaw's Belby and Ryan seemed somehow to match the strength of Goyle and Crabbe, and it was a well aimed bludger from Ryan that ended Chaser Harper's lackluster performance, hitting against his knuckles hard, and sending him into a downward spin.
But the real battle, the entirety of the game, seemed to be raging in silence between Seeker Malfoy and Seeker Li. No matter how long they paced one another, waiting for that flicker of gold, it seemed to be refusing to appear. And then, just as suddenly, it did. And the two of them raced for it, both single-mindedly focused on catching that flickering ball. There was a marked difference in Malfoy from the Gryffindor game. He didn't waste time taunting Li. Didn't show off or attempt to sideswipe her. Malfoy just headed straight for the Snitch with a determined sort of focus. Not quite as determined, perhaps, as that of Li herself, who seemed driven by some preternatural force to reach the Snitch first, not attempting the Wronski feignt that she pulled off so perfectly in Ravenclaw's last game against Hufflepuff. Li was so focused on that goal that one well-aimed shot from Goyle landed square in her side - barely missing both Vaisey and Malfoy, so th it wasn't entirely sure who Goyle had been aiming for - and sent her tumbling as Malfoy's fingers closed around the ball.
Final Score after five hours and twenty seven minutes of game play - 370 Slytherin, 250 Ravenclaw.
(OOC: I was made of fail this week and didn't post an OOC note to ask for how you played, so if you were mentioned and you really want something changed, let me know.)
