"I don't know, really," Nikolas replied, adequately addressing both of Sasha's questions. He shook his head. He'd seen animals riled plenty of times before, but he'd never known the owls to get like this. Sure, they had their bad days, but all at once?
"I think...I think I'm going to go see if there's something in there," he said shortly after. "Maybe some other animal got in and is upsetting them?"
Not waiting for her to offer any feedback, Nikolas finished climbing the staircase and stood fully in the owlery. Even travelling forward such a short distance had made a difference - up here you could hear the shrieking even more loudly, as it echoed dully off of the high ceiling. Nikolas was just reaching for his wand when one of the owls dove steeply. He thought at first that it was falling, but realized barely in time that it was aiming for his head.
Ducking out of the way, Nikolas sidestepped the owl, which recovered and sped away - unfortunately, instead of moving back to the safety of the stairwell, Nikolas had just enmeshed himself further into the fracas of birds. "Oh, shit," he uttered, just as a second owl came at him, nicking his shoulder.
