Characters: Fiona Kemp and Audrey Wadcock
Setting: Late Saturday morning in the Hufflepuff Common Room, surronding corridors and on the grounds.
Summary: Fiona can't go to Hogsmeade and Audrey keeps her company, which leads to an interesting development for them.
Rating/Warnings: G-PGish for mild girl kissage
Closing her journal, Fi looked up and watched the last of her Hogsmeade bound housemates make their noisy exit. The weather outside was nothing less than typical Scottish winter weather and everyone was bundled up in scarves, hats and cloaks. Everyone else, at least. She was still wearing the same comfortable jumper she'd pulled on that morning before breakfast and had no plans to change since she had no plans to go anywhere. Not that she minded terribly staying behind, once you'd been to Hogsmeade several times the novelty diminished somewhat.
Still, she thought to herself, looking back at the book in her lap, it would have been nice to pick up more treats for Lennox. He gave her the most pitiful looks when she ran out. Or, at least, she imagined they were pitiful, they probably looked like his usual generic mousy expression to anyone else.
Audrey made her way down the stairs, squeezing past two third years in ridiculously puffy jackets. They looked excited, shoving each other and Aud rolled her eyes good naturedly, crossing the room and hopping onto the couch beside Fiona. "Hey!" She greeted her friend warmly, glancing at the students making their way out of the Common Room. "Do you think it'll snow?" Normally she would've been among the rest of their housemates, bundled up and heading out to Hogsmeade but she couldn't leave her best friend alone, besides she was certain there would be people out there that she didn't want to run into. "I love watching it snow."
"Probably," Fi looked up as Audrey sat down and smiled a greeting. "It's certainly cold enough. And it's Scotland. If it doesn't today, perhaps tomorrow." Unlike so few she knew, Fi actually loved Winter, she still preferred Autumn and Spring but Winter had a beauty to itself she couldn't deny. "I like watching it too."
The door to the Common Room banged shut, leaving a sudden silence in it's wake. With only first and second years and a smattering of upper level students who stayed behind to fill it up, the sudden emptiness surrounding them was glaring. Fi's head twisted this way and that as she glanced around. "Want to go for a walk?"
"Sure," Aud stretched her legs out and waggled her feet, ensconsed in her comfy slipper shoes. "Give me a minute to get some shoes on? We can go down by the lake." She squeezed Fi's arm and grinned, making to stand up.
"Um. Alright," Fi spoke up and caught the other girl's hand before it was pulled away, raising her volume to snag Audrey's attention back to her before she was up the stairs. "We can just walk around the castle, if you don't want to go out in the cold," she said, elaborating on her original plan. Yes, she did like the winter and tolerated the cold better than most, but that didn't mean she wanted to wander around in it. Fi smiled up at Audrey, "And then you can keep your slippers on."
At Fi's mention of her slippers, Aud coloured a bit and grinned, hoping to hide the slight blush. "They are comfy," she allowed, hating that she was so easily embarrassed. Fiona certainly hadn't been teasing her, not meanly anyway. Yet, she had to go and blush like she was a child. She shook her head inwardly and tugged gently at Fi's hand, her fingers wound around the other girl's. "Shall we?"
"They look comfy," Fi replied, standing up and following as she was tugged along. She noticed the faint red wash across the other girl's cheeks and smiled to herself. She hadn't meant to embarrass her friend and she knew she shouldn't be smiling over the fact she was slightly upset...but Audrey could manage to make embarrassment adorable somehow. "Wish I had a pair like them."
Exiting into the quiet hallway, Fi gave the hand in her own a squeeze and turned left, setting them off down the corridor with no destination in mind. The castle was plenty big enough to spend a good while wandering around aimlessly in. "I'm glad you stayed," she said earnestly, after a few moments of silence had passed.
Absently returning Fiona's squeeze, she followed her friend's lead, smiling slightly as she remembered the adventure she and Sam had gone on. "I am, too." Aud responded, brightly, hugging Fi's arm quickly. "And of course I stayed! You're my best friend, it's not as though I could've left you to be bored all day while I had fun. What kind of friend would I be then?"
"A selfish one," she answered promptly, as if Audrey had actually intended her question to be taken seriously. "Or maybe just a rubbish one. Or both." Fiona shrugged, not too upset at her inability to pin down the answer, and swung their arms gently. "And, anyway," she continued, looking curiously at a gathered group in one portrait, holding what appeared to be an impromptu football match. "After awhile going to every Hogsmeade weekend loses it's appeal..." She watched the robe clad wizards squabble over the ball and let the almost-question trail off.
Aud nodded in agreement and smiled a small smile. "Oh, of course there's that, too." She nodded, seriously, tilting her head to the side slightly. "I mean, aside from the new Weasley shop, nothing ever changes there. And I'm not really one for their shop, it's too... gaudy." Aud couldn't help herself from continuing the sentence with a self-depreciating shrug. "Though I guess some people like that." She squeezed Fiona's hand and smiled towards her friend. "But you're much more fun than any of that."
Fiona's smile spread across her face, lighting up from the compliment. "I do my best," she assured her, leaning sideways til their shoulders bumped. "It helps that you think I'm fun at least." Swinging their arms again, Fi thought about her and Hogsmeade. "Besides, if you were in Hogsmeade now you'd be cold and alone and you would just be getting there. Here, you have warm slippers and fires and me and the fun is already being had." Fiona gave a firm nod of her head.
"These are really comfy slippers," Aud conceded, smiling at Fi. They rounded a corner and Audrey glanced outside through one of the large windows, letting out a happy little squeal. "It's snowing!" Squeezing Fiona's hand, she tugged her friend up the corridor a bit until they reached a bench that had been wedged into a little windowed nook. She clambered onto the bench, raising up on her knees and peering out the window with a gleeful expression on her face. "I love snow!"
Laughing happily, Fiona allowed herself to be yanked toward the bench and fell down onto it beside her friend. She leaned in toward the window and rested her head in her hands, smiling as she watched the fluffy flakes drift downward. "Me too," she whispered, enthralled with the dancing flakes.
Audrey pressed against the window, watching the snow for a moment before turning to face her friend. She paused, suddenly struck silent. There was something about the look on Fi's face that twisted her stomach, in a wonderful way. She was amazing and looked so beautiful and Aud felt an urge tugging her towards the other girl. She wondered what it would be like to kiss her, to run her fingers through her hair and before she realised what was going on, she was leaning towards Fi. She caught herself just in time before she did something stupid and ruined another friendship, shoving off the bench and bouncing to her feet. "Uh," she stammered, blushing furiously. "Let's go outside?"
Fi stared out the window, almost hypnotised by the white spots floating outside. She didn't notice the look Audrey gave any more than she noticed the way she leaned in toward her. When Fi did finally turn, facing Audrey with her excited smile, it was to see the redhead pulling away abruptly. "Yeah," she said, brow crumpling slightly from concern. "Sure. You okay, Aud?" Fiona stood and joined their hands again as she checked, making sure she hadn't missed something.
"Uh," Aud automatically took Fi's hand, linking her fingers through the other girl's and desperately trying to ignore the twisting of her stomach. Merlin, how stupid was she? She'd ruined things with Sam, and yeah, it wasn't like they'd been friends before they'd started snogging but they could have been! And she'd gone and ruined it because she couldn't keep her lips to herself! And then, Alfie, and things were still awkward with him even though they were still technically friends, but she couldn't stand to lose Fiona! "Yeah, yeah, no I'm fine. Everything's fine, I'm just... excited?"
Fiona's face showed her doubt but she allowed Audrey to keep her secret and let the matter drop. "C'mon then," she said instead, the excited, eager grin reasserting itself as she tugged the other girl's hand and hurried toward the Entrance Hall. "Snow!"
"Snow!" Audrey agreed, pushing her thoughts away and hurrying after her friend up the steps. She was still in her slippers and socks, but it didn't matter all that much and she pushed open the door, slipping outside and letting out a little gasp. It wasn't as cold as she'd expected, the wind was low and there were big, fat flakes drifting down from above. "Oh, I love snow!" She exclaimed, tilting her head back and sticking out her tongue in the hopes of catching a snowflake.
Skidding after Audrey, Fiona stood next to her and looked up. Staring up into the snowfall and the way it made the flakes look like they were spiralling down around her made Fiona's head spin and she reached out to grab onto Audrey for stability, tumbling toward the side as she lost her balance.
Aud let out a little noise as Fiona slipped away, grabbing for her. She managed to catch Fi's arms, but the quick movement slid her forwards, her slippers not meant for the icy conditions. The weight of Fiona in her arms tugged her one way and she tried to compensate, but ended up losing her footing and sending them tumbling to the ground. "Oh!" She lay there for a few moments, half on top of Fi, taking mental inventory. "Are you alright?" She exclaimed in concern, looking down at her friend and ignoring the part of her mind piping up that Fi looked good underneath her.
"Yeah," Fiona lifted her head out of the snow that was quickly accumulating on the ground, shaking it once to dislodged the cold snow stuck to her. "I'm fine." She tried a sheepish half-smile, but could feel the burning in her cheeks from the embarrassed blush in her face. Falling down when you were simply standing still was bad enough, but dragging your best friend with you into the cold snow? "Are you?"
Audrey was struck, again, by Fi and half smiled, her mouth moving without much input from her brain. "Yeah, fine. Really fine." She made to move off of Fi, but instead found herself ducking her head and capturing her friend's lips. It was a gentle, tentative kiss and as soon as Aud's brain caught up with her actions, she pulled back in shock, pushing herself to her knees and staring down at the other girl, terrified of her reaction.
Fiona didn't see the kiss coming. She was still looking up at her friend questioningly when the other girl swooped down and pressed their lips together. It was better than expected, and she'd thought about it enough to have preconceived notions. She couldn't even think of words to describe the wonderfully soft, gentle sensation that was kissing Aud. But it was still a surprise and before she had the chance to get over it and kiss the other girl back she was moving away, leaving Fi with a shocked expression staring up at her.
"Uh," Audrey froze, staring down at her friend, her hand creeping up and covering her mouth. "I'm sorry?" She stammered, feeling like she was going to throw up. Fiona looked shocked and wasn't making a move towards her and was that disgust she saw in the other girls eyes? "I didn't... it was... I'm sorry!"
Catching up to the moment, Fiona saw the frightened look cross Audrey's face and wanted to kick herself. Rather than explain that it was okay, she'd been surprised, don't panic, she raised her head and cut off Audrey's stammer with another soft kiss.
Cut off in mid apology, Audrey's hand froze in mid air, then gently moved to cup Fi's face. Kissing her was different to kissing Sam. There was still that soft sweetness, but Fi was more explorative than Sam. She felt less nervous, more sure of herself and she pressed forwards slightly, deepening the kiss, unable to stop herself from making a little noise.
Fiona's stomach felt warm, flopping not uncomfortably. Her head rushed to process Audrey's hand on her cheek, her lips against hers, her own hand resting on the other girl's leg. When Audrey had told her about Sam and her feelings for her, Fi'd had thought about Audrey this way but she was always her friend first and foremost and hadn't dwelled. If she'd even thought Audrey felt like this before she wouldn't have waited for something like this to happen. Or at least not let herself be so surprised by it.
Audrey made a soft noise and Fiona felt her stomach (and every nerve) twist again, marvelling that something so small could make all of her feel so excited. Fi pulled back from the kiss after a few moments, reluctant to end it but needing a moment and compromised by hovering just a few inches away from Aud. "S'cold," she muttered, not really caring too much about it.
Nodding, it took Audrey a moment to be able to swallow her smile. "Yeah," she answered, eloquently. "D'you wanna move inside?" She asked, dropping her hand to her lap and instinctively moving her fingers to wind through Fi's. "Inside's warm. Usually. Unless the heating charms are broken, then it'd probably be cold. Or in the summer, it's cold inside then too, sometimes." It was a monumental effort for Aud to be able to quiet herself, but she finally managed, winding her babble down. "Now though, it's probably warm."
"Yeah, probably," Fiona's smile grew as Audrey's babble continued and by the time the other girl finally cut herself off she was grinning madly. "C'mon," she said, climbing out of the snow and squeezing Audrey's hand. The back of jeans and shirt were soaked and she paused long enough to take out her wand and dry both of them off. She decided warming up naturally in the castle with Aud was preferable to magic and put her wand away before heading back in.
