What: Angry reactions to the Muggleborn Registration Notice
Where: Their house in Ireland
When: Right now
Rating/Warning: TBA, probably high

Heath didn't even usually read the Prophet. It was rubbish these days, and good for lining bird cages and the like, but when he'd seen new Protective Notice across the cover he'd picked it up, and been in his new rooms at Gideon's house the rest of the afternoon, just a little too angry - and really, too scared - to come out and deal with talking to anyone, even his best mates.

Then Orsino had asked what they were going to do, and his answer was the result of hours thinking about it too much and too angrily to do much else. It was shit, complete shit, but if he didn't go? He was sure someone would notice, and soon. It wasn't like they weren't enough in the eye of the wizarding world, and everyone and their sister's fucking dog knew he was muggleborn.

And what else could he do but decide to fuck all with the lot of it. He needed liquor. It was that need that got him, finally, out of his rooms and into the front room and then the kitchen looking. Until it dawned on him that he'd moved in with a fucking Quaker, because Gideon didn't drink.

Gideon had seen the paper as well, and it'd given him a raging headache. He was a half-blood, so he was supposedly safe, but he was pretty sure it wouldn't be long before that was under question. Plus he had no idea if his father was Muggleborn or pureblood or what, he'd never bothered to look into it. All it took was one more step and they'd be after the next lot.

What the hell were they supposed to DO about it, then? They were a rock band, and half of them had barely squeaked by on their NEWTS, how the hell were they supposed to stand up for something like this? Were they? It rankled, the idea of sitting back and just letting it happen. By the time Heath finally surfaced, Gideon was wishing he WAS drunk.

As Heath was finding out, however, the only booze in the place was a half empty bottle of cooking sherry Merton had used for something and then promptly forgotten.

"Fuck," Heath growled from the kitchen, seriously considering the bottle of sherry before he looked at the journal again and answered Orsino. When he came back out and saw Gid there, he crossed his arms over his chest petulantly and shrugged. "Thrust is coming over with booze."

Gideon arched a brow, waving his own journal at Heath. "So I see. Try not to trash the house," he said, then looked at Heath again. "You look like hell. Are you done sulking in your room, because I promise you, I am not letting any Ministry fucks in my house."

"Right. Because we have a choice in that. The way the Prophet's going? We turn out the Ministry and every reporter in the fucking country would be camped out outside the door and hounding us more than they are now." Heath knew that gossip worked just as much against them as it did for them. Some people would like them standing up against shit, but just as many would think they really were... what was it? Magic thieves.

After receiving a 'go' from Heath, Orsino had made a quick round of his flat, ransacking kitchen cabinets gracelessly and throwing whatever alcohol had been lying around for the past few months into an old knapsack. The Prophet article earlier had angered him first, then worried him - not for himself, but for his bandmates, and then for his father. It put the band in a bad position, sure, but at least he was half-blood. Though in the back of his mind he knew the decree would likely eventually expand to include half-bloods as well, all he could think of now was how he was sick with worry about what might happen to Don and Heath and Herman, and that he wanted to drink a lot of scotch and not think about it.

The bag full to bursting with bottles, and Seven whining from her spot on the sofa, Orsino glared at the ceiling before apparating neatly out of the room. Just as suddenly he was outside of the house in Ireland that Gideon, Merton, and Heath currently called home.

Reaching forward, he knocked on the door, with considerably more force than he'd intended.

Heath was still fuming when the knock came, and for the first time in he didn't know how long he actually took out his wand and checked the fucking peephole before he put it away and opened the door.

"Hey," He said by way of greeting, and that was all the formality he gave before he reached for the bag of liquor as he stepped out of the way for Orsino to come in.

"Break down the door while you're at it, why don't you?" Gideon called from the couch. He didn't get up though, still frowning thoughtfully over Heath's words. They were screwed, no matter which way they went, really. He didn't WANT to act like they were supporting this ridiculous order, but he didn't want his friends getting..., well, whatever it was they'd get if they didn't cooperate.

"Hello," Orsino mumbled, stepping into the house and handing the bag over to Heath. It had been a while since he'd been here, and it took him a few moments to get his bearings.

"Thought breaking it down might be an inconvenience to us all," he said, walking to the couch and sitting on the back of it.

"Because we'd have to put the damn thing back up before you'd let us drink," Heath answered, and he didn't even take the bag into the kitchen, just sat it on the coffee table and started rifling through when he sat down. "What are you drinking, Thrust?" Because he'd hand that over first, and then take a bottle for himself.

"Well not to mention it'd be a pretty damn poor showing of the wards I have up." Which he'd probably have to double. Maybe triple. He made a face at the booze but didn't say anything. It was a good thing the place was so big, he had a feeling he'd be pouring people into bed later.

Orsino raised an eyebrow and peered into the bag. Truth be told, he couldn't remember exactly what he'd thrown in there. It was really a huge hodgepodge. But he did recall what he'd wanted in the first place.

"Scotch," he said simply, smirking slightly at Gid's comment and taking the bottle before letting himself fall back onto the sofa, his feet in the air and head hanging off the front.

Heath dug through and found two bottles of scotch, one he held out to Orsino and the other he took for himself. "This is such a fucking mess," He said, opening it and taking a long enough drink that he was grimacing and his throat was good and burnt when he pulled it away from his mouth.

"It was a mess beforehand," Gideon pointed out mildly. "It's just MORE of one now, since it's going to affect us directly. First they'll go after the muggleborn, because you lot are stealing magic, which is the biggest load of crock I've ever heard, then the halfbloods, because we're polluting it or some swill like that."

Orsino rolled over and situated himself into a normal sitting position - no use trying to drink scotch on his back, which would likely result in him simply choking.

"Probably. How exactly do they suppose Muggleborns are stealing magic anyway?" he said, his tone bordering on bitter. Orsino pondered the mouth of the bottle before indulging, enjoying the feel of the alcohol. He didn't wait long to take a second.

Merton was not known for his observational skills. He was also not known for reading the paper, or for being aware of anything that he wasn't directly informed of by bandmates or Leigh. He'd come home finally and then promptly gone to sleep, which was where he'd been until a few hours ago, when he wandered off to check and make sure Heath hadn't actually re-tuned his cell like he'd threatened.

He'd gotten distracted by music for a while, and only emerged when his highly tuned booze-sensor went off, and he made his way back out, grinning as he saw Orsino and dropping down to perch on the arm of the sofa, reaching for the nearest bottle. "Hey!" he greeted.

He picked up on the mood of the room too late and then blinked. "What?"

"How do you think?" Heath said, snorting. "Obviously, when I was eleven, I found some sad little wizarding bloke, knocked him out, drained him with my amazing powers of magic thievery, and left him a squib." He snorted again at the scenario, bitterly, then took another drink.

"And it'll be really sodding noticeable if we don't go in."

Heath looked up from the tirade and the bottle when Merton came in, and then just picked up the Prophet from where it was on the table and tossed it to him. "I stole magic," He said, shrugging.

Merton blinked at him, frowning. "From who?" he asked, then looked down at the paper, scanning the headlines.

"Oh," he said finally, brow creasing with more than a little confusion. "But what does that mean? My mum is muggleborn." And his father a muggle, which made Merton barely above muggleborn himself. "That's rubbish anyway."

"Go in where?" he added, still frowning. He hadn't scanned that far.

"You know the rest of the world isn't going to fall for this bullshit, Heath. People are scared. Hell, I'm scared, I don't know what the hell we're going to do about this. Yeah, they're going to notice if you don't go. But what the hell does it say if you DO go? That we're okay with it?"

He looked at Merton. "The Ministry's making the Muggleborn go in for 'interviews', although it sounds more like 'interrogation'."

"Or arrest," Orsino interjected, frowning, more at his bottle of scotch than at the others. He'd tried not to be the pessimist, but right now it seemed hard to be otherwise.

"I doubt that everyone who goes in for it is okay with it. Most of them are probably just as scared." He paused and took a drink. "Or idiots."

"Or don't have another bloody choice," Heath finished, taking another drink, and he probably should have eaten more today - but he hadn't been planning on binging, either. Sometimes the outside events he liked to ignore just seemed to call for one.

"Interrogation or arrest. Brilliant, blokes, thanks for that. I'm the one who's wand they'll break."

Merton didn't really know why anyone would suddenly think people who'd had magic since they were kids had stolen it. It didn't make any sense to him. "You don't play with your wand. If they break it then we can cast spells for you," he offered, trying to help though it probably didn't really give much comfort.

"So everyone has to be interviewed if they're muggleborns. What then? Do they make you carry a license or something if you are?" Merton asked, looking between them, frowning.

"Well, I'd love to give you a brighter prospect, Heath, but I can't think of one. The point is, we're big enough in the wizarding world that whatever they do if you go, it's going to make a statement of some sort. The problem is not knowing what KIND of statement it's going to be." Gideon was rarely an optimist and this sort of thing certainly wasn't bringing it out in him.

Orsino was silent from his seat at the end of the sofa, staring at his knees. Gideon had a point, about it being a statement whether they wanted it to be or not. Still.

"You're right," he said, looking over at Gideon. "Still. I think there's a point where we need to not care about what sort of statement it's going to make, and care more about our safety."

Heath grumbled something under his breath that sounded like, "not about the spells" and was directed at Merton, but then he was looking up and at his other bandmates.

"At this point I'm a little more worried about me and Don and Herman than about what sort of statement it makes."

Donaghan had been more then annoyed when he’d first seen the article calling all muggleborns in for an “interview”. He really didn’t understand how anyone could think they were capable of stealing magic unless they had magic to begin with. He was beginning to think that logic failed when it came to all purebloods. If he wasn’t so angry with it all he might suggest some nice logic puzzles and books to help them out. But as it stood the anger quickly gave away to fear at what would happen. He was quite sure that the current Ministry wasn’t all that friendly from how their decrees read and their accusations against others.

So he easily jumped at the idea of getting together with the guys for some drinks. The only problem he encountered was his wife, Elizabeth. He had, rather unfortunately, left the Prophet out where she could see it and new that he was a muggleborn and was completely against him ever leaving the house again. It took a lot of reassurances on his part that he was just going to apparate there to calm her and that he’d done so many times before until she would calm down and by the time he had he was quite certain they were well into the discussion and booze.

As his own sorry though he went ahead and grabbed what he had, along with snacks, and apparated to the house in Ireland that his three band mates were living in. A bit of paranoia made him look around before he lifted his hand and knocked. “I brought snacks, let me in!”

Merton didn't know what to say about any of it. He didn't follow the logic behind the change, and thus didn't really follow most of the conversation about it that well. Gideon or Heath or Leigh would probably end up taking him aside later and explaining it better, but for now he just looked from one to the other, frowning.

The knock at least gave him something to do, and he hopped up, going to open the door and let Don in. "Hey," he greeted, reaching to take a bag of the snacks to help. "They're talking about that article and stealing magic," he added vaguely. Merton wondered if maybe he shouldn't just go see his mum for a bit.

"Finally a man of sense, he who brings food to absorb all the alcohol you gits are consuming." He waved Don over, and gave serious thought to enlarging the coffee table, because it was starting to look a little full.

He looked at Heath. "Of course we're worried about you lot more, you git. That's the whole point. What I'm saying is I don't want you to get made MORE of a target because you're in the public eye. I just wish they'd been more clear on what it was they expect to do at these interviews."

The presence of snacks made Orsino perk up a bit, and he attacked a bag of crisps almost before it had touched down on the table. He nodded in Don's direction as her settled back into the sofa.

"I haven't done much reading the Prophet lately - hey, these are good," he said, holding one of the crisps up. "But from what I've gathered they haven't really seen fit to explain anything."

Orsino wished for a moment that he'd just stayed home, waited to see if an owl returned from his parents. What was his dad supposed to do? He wouldn't be able to go to work, that was for sure. Instead of dwelling on it, Orsino liked some salt off of his fingers and got back to his drink.

It was nice of Merton to try to tell him what they were talking about even if he was vague on the details, but he’d figured that was what it would be after he got the invitation to drink. And if they all got wasted, well, they’d probably end up railing more then actually making any progress on what they should do about it. Either way though it appeared that they hadn’t gotten too far into either side yet.

“Of course they haven’t seen fit to explain anything,” Don said as he dug through the bag with the booze before settling on a bottle and sitting down. “If they explained it then people would probably point out the glaring holes in their logic or find some little loophole they accidently stated and they can’t have that. Have to appear all infallible and whatnot. They couldn't stand the general public questioning what they're doing for the 'good of the wizarding world' and whatnot.”

It was all a bunch of rubbish to Don, so for the moment he contented himself with cracking open his drink and taking a long swig of it.

"You don't think the general public's questioning it already?" Heath made a vague arm gesture that was sweeping and proof that he'd already drank a little too much, then he took another drink.

"The general public...there's not that many wizards out there that aren't halfblood or less, really, and most of them running scared now or hiding or going in to be arrested or something. They don't give a sodding fuck about explaining anything to the general public."

"But they can't just arrest you for being muggleborn, can they? Won't they just end up interviewing you and saying something or making you carry something that says you're muggleborn and then just let you go again anyway? Plus people would be brassed if they tried to arrest any of us," Merton offered, taking a bag of crisps and perching on the arm of Gideon's chair this time.

He didn't actually eat the crisps, just toyed with the bag to make it crinkle.

"That's just it, Mert. They can pretty much do whatever they like, if they make a decree about it, and wrap it all up in doing it supposedly for everyone's safety. Once they get all the Muggleborn handled, then it's on to the next group. What worries me is that you're going to end up with people who DO believe this shite, and they're going to be turning on their friends. It'll be a damn mob mentality." Gideon took the bag from Merton long enough to grab a handful of crisps before he gave it back.

Orsino realized that he'd had more of the scotch than he'd thought in this short amount of time, on a mostly empty stomach. This realization was followed almost immediately by a vague light-headedness. Nothing unusual, but it had just come much quicker than he'd expected. He put the bottle on the coffee table, figuring it'd be wise to take a break for a bit.

He was normally very patient with Merton's quirks, but tonight he didn't have the energy to respond.

"Still doesn't get to what we're supposed to do," he muttered, looking sullen and cracking his knuckles.

Ok so maybe they were a bit more into the alcohol then Don had originally thought they were. Had this been a friendly gathering then he’d have felt the need to play catch up, but since it wasn’t he didn’t feel that need. He just wanted to enjoy his drink, eat some crisps and get this serious conversation done and dealt with. Though it was decidedly looking as though they were going to go around and around and never really reach a conclusion.

“Personally I don’t see there is much we can do. We can risk not going in to show our outrage at the situation and consequently be dragged in kicking and screaming or we can willingly go in at our summons and deal. They haven’t given us much information to go on.” Neither seemed like a good idea to Don because he was afraid that either could end up with a stint, or longer, at Azkaban and he didn’t think the others in the group could pull of a break out from there.

"And end up in Azkaban, or forced to..." Heath made another vague, sweeping hand gesture, this time out of frustration. They didn't know what the bloody hell they'd be walking in to if they went to answer the summons the Ministry had put out. For all they knew, it was just a few questions and that was the end of it.

... It certainly didn't feel like that, though.

He took another drink, and then looked at the bottle that was dangerously emptier than it was when he'd had it handed it to him. He wobbled a little when he went to sit it down, and then just collapsed back against the sofa, melting down into the cushions. "I'll go in," He said finally. And he really hoped his friends would talk him out of that.

Merton didn't like either of those options. They both scared him, and he didn't want his mum to have to go in, either. But he didn't have any other options to offer up.

He crinkled the bag in his hand instead, looking up at Heath when he offered and frowning. "I'll go with you?" he offered slowly. If his mum had to go, she could go then, too, maybe.

"Maybe they'll just write your name down and then it'll be over with?" he suggested hopefully.

We can afford to wait a few days and see what happens, Heath. There will be rumors aplenty about what they're doing by then. We can have our agents call the Ministry, get an idea of how they're gonna play it."

As much as Orsino cared about the current plight they were all in, some more than others, he began to feel increasingly sleepy. He couldn't figure out why, as he was normally much better at taking liquor and remaining awake. Probably the emotional strain of the day, and he hadn't slept well last night, come to think of it - Seven had kept whining about something, and he'd had a bizarre dream he couldn't remember now. The scotch had just been the kicker.

This was pathetic.

He mumbled something in response to Heath's declaration. It sounded something like, "That's a load, you're not going anywhere." But then his eyelids were heavier than ever, and his chin fell to his chest, and he was crumpled awkwardly against the arm of the sofa.

Don snorted at the idea of anyone going in first before they got more information and he nodded along when Gideon told Heath in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t going in. Having someone write the Ministry did seem like a logical step. It’d probably confuse the crap out of the Ministry since they were so against logic and he was all for that. “No need to put your neck on the chopping block first until we know more. I’m all for the agent idea asking what’s up with this bull.”

Call it cowardly if you want, but Don hadn’t been in Gryffindor and he was all for using logic and keeping himself out of situations he didn’t want to be in. He also didn’t feel all self sacrificing like Heath obviously did as he definitely wasn’t going to volunteer to go first, but that could have simply been because Elizabeth was scarier then the Ministry could ever be.

Heath looked relieved, and even more relieved at the idea of an agent writing. "Fine, we wait a few days. See what others are saying about it." Or if they ever left the Ministry after they went in.

"And then if we do go in, we make sure all the bloody fanclubs know about it, and are waiting outside for us to come out again." Which would put a halt to traffic in that part of London, and Heath could see the disturbance as a boon right about now.

He noticed Orsino was asleep and almost grinned, then leaned forward to pick up his bottle again.

That wouldn't do much good for his mum, or for any of the other non-famous people they were friends with, or related to. But if Heath wasn't going to go, then maybe they could just not go right now either.

Merton glanced at Gideon, making sure he wasn't brassed at Merton for saying he'd go with Heath instead of telling him not to go, and then set the chips aside, looking at the passed out Orsino. Usually Merton would consider getting out some markers or a stray tube of lipstick if they could find one, and doing some decorating. But it wasn't that sort of day. So he just stayed quiet to let the others talk about it.

Gideon was not pissed at Merton. It was damned hard to be pissed at Merton, actually. It was like kicking a puppy, really. He reached over, grabbing a beer, and handing it to Merton, smiling slightly. "I'll explain it all to you later?" He said quietly. He knew Merton was probably just trying to figure out what the hell they were all upset about.

"Okay, so that's some sort of plan, anyways. We'll owl Leigh.... fuck.... is Leigh Muggleborn, does anyone know? And then we'll tell our agents to make inquiries and keep a close watch on the journals and the Prophet. Especially for any sudden mysterious disappearances, or rumors."

Bringing up Leigh’s own purity was a good point. It wouldn’t do to have a muggleborn agent doing the owling if she was. He tried to think back on all the conversations he’d had with her, but he couldn’t remember any time she’d brought it up or they had. It wasn’t like they had ever been pressed about purity status for any of them. As it had turned out they were all either muggleborn or halfbloods.

“Maybe we should owl Leigh first if no one knows to find out her status in all of this. If she is muggleborn then maybe she knows someone that can make the inquiries for us? And if things go well for us we could raise a big enough stink to make sure they do for her?” He couldn’t imagine what it would be like if Leigh wasn’t around to make sure they didn’t totally screw everything over at any given time.

Heath shook his head, taking another drink and practically dropping the bottle. It was a lucky save that caught it, and he groggily put it back onto the table, swearing it off for the night... which probably meant he'd pick it up again soon.

"Nah, she's ... her family's got those dragons, right?" He was slurring a little, and he made a small gesture at 'dragons' that was meant to look like flying, and came off more as waving at the floor.

Merton nodded and smiled a little wanly at Gideon, but didn't say anything. He didn't remember about Leigh's family, either. But if she was muggleborn, then maybe she should come stay here too, so she was safe. There was room. She could have his room if she wanted.

He leaned over, taking Heath's bottle away instead of taking the beer Gideon offered. Heath had that wavy, slurry thing that said he'd probably had too much. And that was fine if it was a happy drunk, but since Heath wasn't happy, Merton thought it probably was better if he didn't have much more.

Gideon grinned as Merton took away Heath's bppze. Even if they had a lousy plan of action, it was some sort of plan, which worked out a lot better then sitting around and freaking out, especially since Heath was really starting to worry him. "Yeah, she's got dragons. Hey, we can always have her set some loose on the Ministry if they try anything funny, yeah?"

Don saw Merton take Heath’s booze, so he made certain that he pulled his closely to him and had a firm grip on it. After all he’d not had nearly as much as the others that were drinking and he wasn’t ready to give it up. The idea of setting the dragons on the Ministry was sufficiently distracting though and Donaghan grinned at the idea.

“We could have her make them roast some nuts.” Of course there was more then one manner in which they could do that. And there was also the trouble such an act would bring, but more then likely the only ones that would remember this part of the conversation were the ones that hadn’t drank. “Or maybe just eat a few of the more disagreeable ones. I’m sure that’d make the rest fall right in line.”

Heath found himself laughing at that despite the funk he was in, one hand falling to his crotch. "Roast nuts..." he said, and then laughed again, before he was struggling to sit up and explain.

"No no... her family. With the dragons on the...reservation? Or reserve. So she can't be muggleborn..." And when he thought he'd gotten that across, he looked to the coffeetable, suddenly frowning. "Hey." He said, offended. "I had a ... didn't I have a bottle?"

"No, you finished it," Merton lied, hiding the bottle on the other side of the table. He grinned as Heath covered his nuts. "The dragons wouldn't aim for you. They're pretty big. They might have trouble with little teeny targets," Merton teased.

He'd never known Leigh had dragons though. There was probably a good reason she hadn't mentioned that. "Her family really has dragons. Can we go see them? Have they eaten any of her grandparents?"
