Who: Lucius Malfoy & Minister for Magic Thicknesse
What: Meeting
Where: The Ministry
When: Today
Warnings: None

Walking through the halls of the Ministry once again unhindered was a small pleasure, perhaps, but Lucius cherished it nonetheless - possibly a bit too much. It had been far too long since he'd been invited into the upper levels of the place for any worthy reason. Carrying out the Dark Lord's wishes was all well and good - he was learning to enjoy a little bloodshed more and more every day - but hardly as satisfying as old times. He had no great illusions now about exactly whose agenda he would be furthering, whatever favor the Minister was asking; but, as it had been initiated with an invitation rather than a stabbing pain in his forearm, he found himself more optimistic than usual that it might actually be up his alley.

He was shown in immediately. Pius Thicknesse was a solid sort of man with grey-streaked black hair and a great overhanging forehead that shadowed his glinting eyes. He was seated behind the large desk of the Minister of Magic as Malfoy entered, and he did not stand, only gestured impatiently to the chair across the desk from him.

When Malfoy came closer, the look of Imperius in his eyes was unmistakable, for any who was truly familiar with the spell. There was the glint of ferocity in them that marked the man, but it was muted enough to see that he was not always wholly in control.

Still, it didn't take much to get the current Minister of Magic to do the Dark Lord's bidding. He was quite apt to do it, all on his own.

"Malfoy," He said, as the other man came in. "We have a job for you."

It wasn't as pleasant a reception as Lucius had been accustomed to receive in this office, but he quickly realized that being offended would be unproductive - Thicknesse looked as though he wasn't quite himself. And he would never have expected courtesy from the man he supposed was pulling the strings.

"Thank you," he said, with a sharp smile as he took the seat he'd been offered. "Do we? I'm always happy to be of service, of course." More than happy, these days. "What can I do for you?"

"Not for me," Thicknesse said, and the tone held an air of lofty authority that was only barely muted by the spell he was so often under. "You've been reappointed as a Hogwarts Governor for a reason, Malfoy. Surely you have your own thoughts. I am not interested in them, as I assume they mirror my own. McGonagall must be gotten rid of quietly, though."

Lucius liked it better when the mirror reflected the other way, of course - but gold would be of no use at all, here. His smile tightened slighty. "I have no doubt they do. I quite agree - quietly would be best. Consider it done, then." He doubted very much she'd listen to reason, but ... well, it wasn't as though he had a choice. He would puzzle it out somehow.

Thicknesse nodded once, glad that Malfoy had figured out so quickly what it was that he wanted. "She'll be far easier to dispatch once she's left her post, as well," he mused. "That puny little army waiting for their hero. We'll pick them off one by one while the boy's in hiding." Now that they had a respectable plan and a good hold on the Ministry, of course.

"Ah - she certainly would be, yes. We must whittle down the resistance, of course." Lucius occupied himself with looking over a particularly interesting paperweight on the man's desk. "She's rather popular, however. And little more than an old woman, these days. You're quite right to want to 'dispatch' her, but - perhaps it would be better to wait? It wouldn't do to be too terribly transparent about it." Getting McGonagall out of Hogwarts was one thing, but he'd be damned if he was going to be assigned to that murder. She wasn't nearly old enough.

"The time will soon come, Malfoy, when we need not worry about being transparent." As the files on his desk well showed. The New Year and new dictates would be met with resistance, but he couldn't imagine that it wouldn't be burnt away like chaff.

"A day we've all eagerly awaited, for no small number of years. I'm so very glad to hear it." It was better than waiting, anyhow. It had to be. "If there's anything else I can do to speed it along, of course, you need only say the word."

"This first," Thicknesse leaned back in the impressive large Minister's chair. It was quite like a throne, which he appreciated. "I am assuming Azkaban did not harm your sense of subtlety."

"Oh, no, indeed." Lucius made himself smile. "A year with nothing to do but think will do wonders for one's self-possession." And if lashing out at the Minister would not be especially self-possessed, he could at least be on his way, if he was only going to be needled. "This first - as you say. I'll start on her as soon as possible. Now, if you prefer."

"It would be in our best interests to have her removed before students return from the holiday," The Minister said, nodding. "I'm sure you'll be very convincing."

"I very much appreciate your confidence." You wretched, jumped-up puppet. "I'll give the matter my full attention - Hogwarts will have a new headmaster before the term begins. Is there anything you'd like taken care of, while I'm there?"

"Not at this moment," Thicknesse said, making a vague hand gesture which was entirely dismissive, to say he was done with the conversation. "Oh, but if you see Severus Snape. You might tell him to get ready."

"Of course." Lucius stood, more than ready to take his leave - but more encouraged than he had expected to be, in the end. If the Minister had meant that Severus would be the new appointee ... Well, Snape had in the past proven himself willing to look after Draco, if properly coerced. There were certainly worse people to have in the position. "A good day to you, then. You'll hear as soon as I have anything to report."
