WHO: Audrey Wadcock & Alfie Cattermole
WHAT: bffs chillaxin'
WHERE: Alfie's flat, in Brixton
WHEN: 9 August
WARNINGS/RATING/STATUS: Awesomeness contained within/PG?/Ongoing

Raising herself up onto her toes, Audrey gave a little spin. It had been raining for most of the day and she was starting to feel a little cooped up, but it was nothing compared to how she'd have been feeling at home. Remaining on her toes, she hopped and spun, landing gracefully on Alfie's bed. It was great being here, with Alfie and the rest of his family, they were almost more of a family than hers. She knew that was mostly in her head though, it had just been brought about by something Ella, while in one of her snitty moods, had said. Gemma didn't treat her any differently and she was just as much Ella's sister as Anna was. Regardless of logic though, it had been hard to get the girl's accusation out of her head; that she wasn't part of the family just because Gemma wasn't her biological mother.

Shaking her head, Audrey stretched her foot and poked her friend with her toes. "I'm bored," she complained, good-naturedly. She wriggled around until she was hanging half off the bed, observing Alfie's room upside down. "You should entertain me."

Diagon was a no-go, and that was clear from the scrunched face Alfie pulled at the suggestion. He and the girls didn't even get to go to get their own school supplies this year, it was that bad. His dad was having to take a day of from the Ministry (a morning at least) and go and get the things they needed.

He brightened at the second suggestion though, sitting up. "We could definitely go for ice cream. I bet I can find a few quid to take us."

Observing Alfie from her upside down position, she smiled, then frowned, exaggerating the second expression and wondering if it looked like a smile to her friend. "I've got some Muggle money," she said, waving her hand in the air and resisting the urge to slither off the bed into a handstand instead, sitting up as well.

She hopped off the bed and snagged her shoes, slipping her feet into them. "Although really, the best time to be at Diagon would be right now, I mean the streets have to be crawling with Aurors and DMLE personnel. It's got to be totally safe there."

"Fine, you try telling that to my mum," Alfie was teasing even as he said it, though, because he knew there was no talking his mum out of it. She barely wanted him to let him go out with his muggle friends! Going to Diagon would give her a fit.

"Ice cream's better than going to buy things for school anyway," he pointed out, the word 'school' sounding sour in his mouth, really, like he didn't like the taste of it any more than he liked the idea of going back to it.

"Oh I will! Don't think I won't!" Audrey countered, not making a move to go look for his mum. Both her parents had been adamant about not allowing her to go the Alley, making her promise she'd stay away and she didn't like to break her promises. She eyed Alfie, tugging at the heel of her shoe that had folded down as she'd slipped her feet in. "Maybe later, though."

She picked up her bag from where it was resting on the floor and checked through the pockets, making sure her wallet was inside. "I'm thinking a sundae," she started, envisioning the treat. "With cherries and bananas and caramel syrup." She nudged her friend and waggled her finger. "And clothes shopping beats ice cream almost any day."

"Maybe for a girl," He grumbled, and Alfie pulled another face and finally got up from her bed to hunt for a pair of clean socks again, hopping on one foot when he found them to pull one on, then hopping on the other foot to pull on the other.

"I miss Fortescue's," He said about the sundae, because nothing was better than Fortescue sherbert on a hot day, really.

Audrey heaved a sigh and nodded, leaning back against the door jam. "That was one of the best things about back to school shopping!" She pursed her lips and crossed her arms over her chest. "What do Death Eaters need with ice cream anyway?" She muttered, glancing down the hall in the direction she supposed his mother was.

"Maybe Fortescue led like a ... double life." Alfie snorted as he said it, not wanting to think of the kind man who'd handed him his ice cream cones as a Death Eater captive, or victim.

He finished pulling his socks on and sat down to pull on and tie his shoes.

"A double life?" Audrey scoffed, detangling the strap of her bag. "What, like he sold ice cream by day and ..." she trailed off, swallowing the end of her sentence. It didn't seem right to joke about people being killed when people were actually being killed, but at the same time, what was there to do but joke? "... did other stuff by night?" She finished, lamely, studying the buckle of her bag intently.

He didn't know how he'd have finished that either. He couldn't exactly picture Fortescue dishing out their ice cream in the morning and then fighting Death Eaters like a superhero at night, either. He didn't answer the lame finish to her statement, just frowned at his shoes and then stood up, reaching for her hand. "Come on, we'll get ice cream and forget about it."

Tangling her fingers through Alfie's, Aud offered up a small smile, not liking the sudden pall that had come over their day. She'd tried to understand why these things were happening, how people could kill other people just for being different to them, and she couldn't wrap her mind around the concept. She wanted to just forget it, but she didn't think she could. "I don't get it," she pushed, after a moment, part of her wanting to listen to her friend and shut herself up.

Alfie frowned, and he tugged her by her fingers against his side as they walked out of his door so that he could slide an arm around her shoulders. He didn't really realize how that would look to his sisters and his mum as they walked out of his bedroom like that, and if he had realized he probably wouldn't have cared.

"Me either," He admitted, sighing. He hated thinking about it, really, because you couldn't help but feel helpless when you thought about it.

Pressing against her friend, Audrey slipped an arm around his waist and leaned her head against his shoulder. She wished there was something she could do about it, just being in school or at home and hearing about things second hand made her feel so helpless.

"I mean, it's not like muggles hurt wizards or anything," Audrey paused, and twisted her mouth to the side in thought. "Well, you know, not recently at least. I just..." she sighed and squeezed him gently, hooking her thumb through a belt loop on his jeans. "I wish there was something we could do to help."

"What can we do, though," Alfie shrugged. "We'll be at Hogwarts." Which was safe, but was far away from any of the terror, and Alfie did sort of appreciate that - even if it had been boring sometimes.

"And by the time we're out of school.. I mean, how long can it go on, really?"

Audrey echoed Alfie's shrug. "I'm sure there's stuff we could do," she persisted, glancing down the hall towards where his mother was and lowering her voice. "Like... Harry Potter, he does stuff. I know we're not 'chosen'," she waggled the fingers of one hand in air quotes. "Or whatever the Prophet says, but we could help..."

She trailed off and shrugged again, raising her voice to its normal volume. "Should we invite your sisters out?"

"If you want to," Alfie shrugged again, brightening when the subject went back to going out for ice cream. Because he didn't want to think any more about it, and he was pretty sure that no one was going to do the things that Harry Potter was supposed to be chosen to do.

Audrey let out a small sigh, her fervor gone almost as quickly as it had bubbled up. "Nah," she decided, digging in her purse and tugging out a hair tie. She handed her purse to Alfie to hold then bent at the waist and gathered her hair up into a ponytail and the crown of her head. Wrapping the hair band tight, she straightened, flipping her ponytail behind her and taking her bag back, smiling.

Stepping against him, Aud tucked herself against Alfie again, loving how comfortable she felt near him. "Just us this time, I think."

Alfie pulled a face at holding her purse and rolled his eyes at her - but he thought girls looked better with all of their hair pulled back anyway. Otherwise it was always flying in your face if you walked close to them.

He was quick to hand it back to her when she was standing up, though, and then he laughed and held up a finger to indicate that he'd be back in a minute, then sprinted to the small sewing room his mother had. "Mum, Aud and I are going for ice cream, yeah?"

"Not a foot near Diagon Alley," His mum reminded him, and he groaned but agreed, then sprinted back to Audrey.

"Not a foot near Diagon..." He mimicked, then laughed. "Ready to go?"

Twirling the bottom of her ponytail around her finger, Aud grinned as Alfie came running back to her. "Yup!" She held her arm out for his and linked them together. Trailing Alfie out of the flat and down to the street, Aud momentarily wished she were older and could use magic before slinging her bag across her body and hopping out into the rain.

She was soaked almost instantly, grinning all over her face. The warm rain felt amazing, she was so glad they'd gone out. Holding her hand out for Alfie's, she balanced on one lag and waggled her foot in the direction she thought Diagon was. "Oooh," she grinned, unable to keep a straight face at her faux misbehaving.

"Not a toe!" Alfie chided her with a loud snort, and then he took her hand, a little more aware on the street how that probably looked but not really caring at all. "Of course it rains as soon as you get here. Look what you did!"
