Who: Lucius and Draco
What: Christmas shopping
Where: London
When: This afternoon
Warnings: TBA

Lucius was pleased to have an excuse to spend a bit of time with his son before they acquired extra company for the holidays. Recent events had brought him to the realization that he had no idea whether the boy was safer at home or at school (the likely answer was neither, which was less than comforting) - but in either case, as long as they were actually together, it was easier to find a little peace of mind.

And more information, of course, was always a good thing. A shopping trip seemed as good an opportunity as any for a short grilling session. He was, perhaps, a little too eager to hear that Draco's seventh year was proceeding in some semblance of his own. Any developments that didn't have to do with the Dark Lord were welcome news. Jewelry might have been a bad sign or a good one, of course, but at least it was something; and so long as Draco didn't gravitate toward the rings, he would consider it a positive point.

The shop was one he'd patronized before on a few occasions - sufficiently ancient to be respectable, and far enough from the beaten path to be less than crowded. The prices were a little higher than he might have liked (especially considering he had two Christmases and two anniversaries to cover, never mind Draco's purchases), but that was hardly very high up on his list of concerns. He leaned down slightly to peer into the case nearest the door. He'd given diamonds two years ago; doing so again might be tedious. "And what was it, precisely, that you had in mind?" he asked, passing over a rather garish bracelet. Something appropriate to a recent attachment, he hoped - but then, he wasn't sure how Draco would know, really.

"I bought her a bracelet, as a belated birthday gift," Draco answered, looking over the display and making a face at the same too bright, too large bracelet his father had passed by. "A necklace, this time, I think would suit." And because he was trying to remind himself that he needed to be civil with his Father to let this holiday with Astoria pass as planned, he added a, "Don't you agree?"

"Quite right." Belated didn't bode terribly well, but - Draco certainly had an excuse to be distracted. Any girl worth her salt would understand ... Not that Lucius envied him the stream of excuses that was no doubt necessary; his distractions were not the sort of thing one talked about. "- When did she first come to your attention? I can't remember the last time we met her parents." He passed over a few of the more delicate pieces; Narcissa was hardly a woman of a certain age, but she wasn't fifteen, either.

"Over the summer, when she came to the gathering I held before we all returned to school," Draco shrugged one thin shoulder, stopping at a case of platinum necklaces and looking them over. He wanted something delicate for her, something that would lay against her throat... and wouldn't get in his way. "When we leave, I'll take a gift to her parents and then side-along with her to the Ranmore house? She's not yet able to apparate on her own, of course."

"Ah." And what the hell had he been doing, then? He couldn't begin to remember. "Yes, that sounds perfectly appropriate. She's a fifth, isn't she?" As though he didn't already know perfectly well. He called the attendant over to unlock something; as the man was sorting through his keys, Lucius peered over his shoulder to watch Draco. He leaned over to tap gently on the glass over one of the necklaces. "Very good. That one's quite nice."

"Yes, she is," Draco answered, moving to the next display and seeing a necklace as well. Platinum and delicate. He did like that one. "She's only just turned sixteen."

"Hm." Lucius watched, with somewhat less than half of his attention, the piece the attendant was showing him. There were a lot of questions he would have liked to ask Draco, but he doubted they would produce very satisfactory replies. (And he could answer what's she like? for himself in a few days - much more efficient than trying to decide what to read into whatever answer his son gave him.) "Her parents seem very obliging, in any case. I'm sure I can't wait to meet her. Even if it isn't at home."

"Her parents," Draco said with far less enthusiasm. "Ought to be excited. They've set up an arranged marriage for their elder daughter. I'm sure they're ecstatic over my wanting to date Astoria."

Lucius raised an eyebrow, though he continued inspecting the case in front of him. "That's rather - old fashioned." Not something he considered a fault, certainly, but not something he often had the opportunity to call someone else. "To whom?" He couldn't imagine anyone would go to the trouble of arranging a marriage with someone objectionable, but ... well, there was undoubtedly something unusual going on, there.
