When: This evening
Where: Malfoy Manor
What: Talking
Rating: TBA
Open/Closed: Closed

The ice in his glass clicked gently against the rim as Lucius climbed the stairs, carrying the latter half of his nightcap from the library to his bedroom. It was precisely two minutes past the time that he had always been taught one could politely retire. He may not have been sleeping particularly well, these days, but he was certainly getting to bed at a more reasonable hour. He stepped inside and let the door swing shut behind him, at once breathing a little easier - no one had yet had the nerve to intrude on him here. The only company he would encounter would be the welcome sort.

He took a seat in one of the chairs that stood by the fireplace, deposited his drink on the end table, and seized up the newspaper that lay exactly where he'd left it this morning. It was pretty well read-over already, but there was something comforting in knowing he wouldn't encounter anything unexpected; and anything to dull his mind before he went to sleep was gladly received. He absently loosened his cuffs as he worked through the Quidditch page again.

Narcissa sighed as she made her way up to her and Lucius's room. It had been a hectic day trying to avoide people, not arouse suspicion and just generally get through the day. Plus she was pissed at Lucius. She still had no idea what was going on and while she didn't' like to know all of the details she would prefer to know more than what she currently knew.

Entering their room she sighed softly. "Lucius," she said as she made her way into the dressing room to change out of her robes from that day.

Lucius let the top half of the paper drop, watching her as she crossed the room without so much as pausing. "Hello, my dear." It was hardly the most enthusiastic reception he'd ever been given. He felt a little of the usual tension creeping back into his shoulders. Fantastic.

He considered turning his attention back to reading, but that seemed ... unwise. And so he set the paper aside once again, stood, and wandered over to the doorway she'd just disappeared through. "How was your day? I don't believe I've seen you since breakfast." He had been out, doing nothing he really cared to talk about. But this seemed worth risking a few follow-up questions.

Narcissa knew she had been slightly cold in her greeting but if he had been through what she had today, he would have been too and surely he would understand that. Sighing she came out dressed in a night gown and sat on the bed.

"What didn't I do?" she asked softly before continuing louder. "It seemed that everything that could go wrong did. The day just dragged on with one situation after another but it's over know which is the main thing," she said with relief. "Hopefully tomorrow shall be better," she said hoping it would be the case. She doubted she could go through another day like today. "How was yours love?" she asked him trying to act like she wasn't stressed out.

"Dreadful," Lucius said, hiding his relief behind a sympathetic face. It was no great comfort that whatever had upset her was not, apparently, his fault ... but it was some comfort. It freed him to sit beside her, for instance, and to smooth her hair away from her face without too much danger of being rebuffed - always a good thing. "I hope it will be. Mine was spectacularly boring. The less said the better, really. - Is there anything I can do?" It was hardy a subtle change of subject, but he really did not intend to discuss with her how he spent his time these days.

And if there was some way he could make it easier on her, of course, he was eager to hear it. Seeing her distressed always seemed to feed his gnawing guilt, and that was not a feeling he was accustomed to.

While Narcissa wasn't mad at him she as annoyed but she didn't want to tell at him. Maybe talk but she needed to be near him for a bit first before she brought it up especially with the day that she had had so far. She stiffened slightly as he sat down next to her but she did relax slightly.

When he asked her that she thought perhaps it would be a good idea to bring it up instead of waiting like she had planned to do. She picked up the change but she didn't fight it. It looked like neither would want to talk about their days much. "Tell me whats going on," she said looking at him in the eyes. "I don't like being kept in the dark of whats happening especially when it is inside my own house," she said sharply.

Lucius froze briefly, then let his hand fall onto the mattress between them. That didn't take long at all. His fingers drummed against the coverlet as he looked away from her with a sinking feeling, not quite willing to look her in the eye for what he knew was going to be a decidedly deficient answer. "A fair amount of it takes place outside the house, to be fair," he said, brazenly ignoring the command (but not without some trepidation). "And the less you hear about it, the better. I realize it must be - frustrating, at times, but I see no benefit to involving you more than you already are." He sounded more than usually officious, as he often did when trying to forestall any debate.

Narcissa could tell that Lucius didn't want to talk about it but this time she wasn't going to bend to his wishes. She had the right to know what was happening in her house and in general. It wasn't his place to tell her no. "True but a lot does happen here and I do believe I have the right to know. What happens if something happens to you and I have no idea where you are as I don't know what is going on?" she asked him dryly hoping that the emotional manipulation of the situation would work. If not there was always crying.

"It's nothing to do with rights," he began, sensing the direction this was headed and attempting to cut it off before it became unmanageable. "Of course you have a right, my dear. But - things are unsettled." That was something of an understatement, but he pressed on. There was nothing he could say that she wouldn't see through immediately; he would simply have to work with what he had. "It's bad enough that Draco's neck-deep in it. Forgive me, but I think it's more likely that burdening you with this sort of knowledge would only mire you deeper in - nothing is going to happen to me, but if it were to happen, I'm not sure what consolation knowing would be."

Narcissa did understand what he was saying but she couldn't accept it. "How am I supposed to know you are safe then? What if something happens to you and I dont' know where you are? WE HAVE THEM LIVING HERE AND YOU EXPECT ME NOT TO KNOW WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?" she shouted at him getting to the end of her nerves. She hated being mad at her husband but she hated being in the dark even more... and that was saying something.

"Luc please," she pleaded with him. "I need to knwo."

Lucius stood off the bed, the desire to pace suddenly uncontrollable. He winced as her voice rose, and stopped in front of the dark fireplace, dreading having to look her in the face again. He was keenly aware of the fact that convincing her of anything could be a chore, and the arguments at his disposal now were nothing if not weak - utterly self-serving. After a long moment, he turned and leaned against the mantelpiece. He had to try, at least.

"For the sake of argument," he muttered, sounding rather tired, "Let us suppose something does happen to me. If you knew where I was - what would you do? Or, if you prefer: if something objectionable were going on inside your house, and you knew about it - what would you do then?"

Cissa knew he had a point but it didn't mean that she liked it. "Stop it," she said. "Make sure it didn't happen," though she did know that it would be difficult to do so. she just wanted peace in the house and to know her husband was safe.

"For you," she said taking a deep breathe, "I would be there for you, make sure you were safe. Get you away so nothing more happened to you."

"Precisely," Lucius said, feeling a rush of relief - they understood one another, apparently. "I would do the same - for all the good it would do. The best of intentions won't save either of us if we go rushing headlong into something too we can't prevent." He made his way back to the bedside, and took her hands.

"If you had known what would happen when I went to the Department of Mysteries ... you might have spent the year in prison with me, my dear. And while the company would have been infinitely improved, I wouldn't have been able to bear it. - I can't bear it. You are one of the few things He hasn't yet tried to take away from me. Do you understand?"

Narcissa still wasn't still accepting of what he was saying. He did have a point though. "I don't like it though. I want to know at least a little bit. What is being planned and the like. I don't want to participate just know what is going on. You know I don't like surprises like that," she said letting a couple of tears fall.

"Please - don't," Lucius said, feeling unaccountably tired. Arguing with her was orders of magnitude worse than butting heads with anyone else. Even after more than twenty years, he felt he hadn't got a handle on it - the wretched feeling that crept over him when he saw her crying was still a miserable shock. "I know. If I could, my dear, I would - what I can, I will. I very sincerely hope you won't find any surprises. But I don't like them either, and the closer you come to all of it, the more likely we both are to be very unpleasantly surprised indeed." Now that Draco was too deeply entangled to be removed, it was, quite literally, his worst nightmare.

Narcissa didn't want to argue with him and she was so close to giving up. It made her feel depressed when they did so and she hated seeing him like this. Nodding she gave in. There was no point in continuing this argument. She knew that and she was feeling guilty for making him feel bad and she understood exactly what he was saying. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have brought it up," she said moving slightly to lean against him.

"Quite alright," he said automatically, his shoulders sagging a little under his flood of relief. She had, as she'd pointed out, every right to bring it up - but that didn't mean it would do either of them any good. He sat with her again, slipping an arm around her shoulders. "Perhaps - later, when things have quieted a bit. This won't last forever. And as soon as it's safe to do so - well. You know I would rather have your help than refuse it." But he hardly had any choice, at the moment.

Narcissa automatically curled up into him feeling better now that they weren't arguing any more. She really did hate it when they did argue. It hurt her emotionally so that she always ended up feeling exhausted afterwards. Narcissa nodded knowing he was speaking the truth. She just had to accept it. "Thank you love," she said softly smiling up at him.
