Greg Goyle ([info]a_reticent_git) wrote in [info]wished,

What a happy Sunday!
Who: Greg Goyle and Theo Nott
What: Greg is cheered by the game and is using his good mood to try to study...maybe Theo can help
Where:  Slytherin Common Rooms, at first, then Boys' Dorm if it gets too noisy
When: Sunday afternoon
Warnings: okay forget TBA; make it R for language alone

He knew he was getting looks from his fellow housemates as they passed by.  The sight of the book in his lap would make most of them stop in the first place, but with the paper next to him, Greg looked positively the student.   In addition to it, he had a grin on his face as his eyes focused on the pages infront of him.  He'd read it over three times now, and it still wasn't making much sense.

He turned his attention to the paper next to him, and it made him grin again at the article in the Prophet.  Draco was damn right; they needed to start their group up straight away.  He let out a snorting chuckle and moved his eyes back to his book, his smile starting to fade slightly.

This was going to be tougher than he thought.  He'd hoped that reading old text books again (okay, for the first time really) would help his charms skills but he was having a bugger of a time at it.  He let out a small sigh, grunted and closed the book in his lap. He let his head drop back, his gaze on the ceiling of the common room as he tried to think what to do.

Theo was in a pissy mood; to be honest to him, it wasn't as if he didn't have a really damn good reason to be. Nott Senior was back at home and more crazy than he had been before he'd gone into Azkaban. Theo thought he'd be safe in Hogwarts with his father back at home but Nott the older was exactly that, old, and well-versed in all kinds of ways to mentally torment his son from a distance, or so Theo thought.

He'd been ignoring the owls his father had been sending him until the fourth one came through a little like a Howler but... well, it almost gave him second-degree burns. He'd been replaying to them after that but, despite how he hated his father, he'd picked up a lot of his tricks and they were currently locked in a duel of sharp-edged tongues, dressed up in icy deference.

He'd been spending most of his time 'elsewhere' (read, watching Thestrals) but had to go back to his room at some point and he only stopped on his stalk through the common room to his bed because the snap as the book closed caught his attention. "Problems Gregory?" he asked, his tone balancing on sincere and scathing.

Greg looked up at the sound of the voice, and turned slightly. Seeing it was Theo, he let his shoulders drop and he nodded, "Yeah," he said and he pulled the papers over towards him, making more room on the couch, "You? You look like it," he said, realizing that Theo did look more irritated than normal.

Greg paused, and then softened ever so slightly, "I'll tell you yours if you tell me mine," and he winced, "Bloody hell, you know what I mean Nott," he added, feeling like an idiot. It was always like that with him. He was great at noticing things, and being spot on with some stuff, but when he opened his fucking mouth, he sounded like a bloody stupid troll.

Theo was catlike in that he'd sit somewhere when he wanted to regardless of if anyone else wanted him to or not, see his taking over Draco's bed for more details.

As it was, Greg was a friend and he didn't exactly want to face the owl he knew would be waiting for him in his room anyway... might as well take the chance to procrastinate while he could. He sat down on the arm of the couch, toeing his shoes off and perching his feet on the cushions. "I do." he said, without responding to the rest. "Book do something personal to you?"

Greg turned to face him, leaning against the opposite arm, "Sort of. It's bloody hard to read, is all. And I need to read it," he grumbled, shifting his eyes back down to it. He wasn't sure how much he wanted to share, out here in the open for all to see. He sort of shrugged his shoulders again, "I...I got to read it, I've just got to," he said, his voice sort of hushed, and he looked about to see if anyone else had heard.

"Theo," he said, "I've got to get better at my Charms. Can you think of any other way, besides reading the books?"

He might have come across as cold and distant, but although his expression didn't really change as Greg told him about what he was struggling with he was listening and listening with the fullest of his attention, even though that was always splintered a little as he always had an ear out for trouble coming his way.

"I'd suggest a tutor." he tried, looking over to see what book Greg was reading. "I know that book."

Greg looked blankly at his book and then turned his head to Theo, his eyes resting on the other boy's face.

"A tutor? Who could I get to tutor me? I mean, I can't very well let it out that I'm getting one. People might think me....lacking and well, not be so scared of me," he said, explaining with Goyle logic.

He held the book out for Theo to see better, "Yeah, it's our 1st year Charms book. I thought I should start here...maybe...," and he turned his head looking at the title himself.

Greg paused, and shifted and set the book down between them He then scratched at himself, pulling at his pants slightly to give his bullocks a bit more room. He did this unconsciously, not worried that Theo might see. He was more worried about someone over hearing them, and then realized that he hadn't asked Theo what was wrong.

"So, you know mine. What's up with you?" Greg asked, trying for diplomatic, but coming across as a bit confrontational.

"My dad came back from the dead." Theo said with a sigh, like it was just a small inconvenience, as if what he'd just said didn't make him certifiable.

"I know that book. I could tutor you if you want." He offered simply. Doing something with his time other than staring at thestrals and eating his way through the library would give him an extra excuse to fob his dad off with.

Greg frowned slightly, "He's out, isn't he? And back to giving you shit? Bloody hell," he added wondering if Theo got the same as he did from his dad. Greg supposed so. And at the offert, Greg blinked and sat up.

"You are not mucking me, are you? That would be brilliant," he said as his face opened in glee. But then he glanced about, "Not here. Not where they can all see. Come on, we'll talk more in our room," he added as he started to get his stuff together to rise,

Theo nodded without saying anything as Greg confirmed what he'd told him. Well, if 'he's out' was replaceable with 'back from the dead' which Theo was going to accept rather than make a fuss.

He shook his head then to show Greg that he'd meant what he'd said and then shrugged before wordlessly sliding off the couch arm and following behind Greg to their dorm, hands in his pockets.

Greg led the way, plodding back down the hall to the room that he shared with the other boys. He tossed the book onto the bed, and then sort of threw himself onto it, his body hitting it and then twisting to roll onto his back. He put his hands behind his head and watched, expecting Theo to take a spot near the foot.

He lay there only a moment, and then sat up, and looking at the book with apprehension on his face, "How are we going to do this? I mean, I just suck, Theo," Greg said in earnest, not hiding anything now that they were in private.

He looked down at his hands and then up at Theo again, "I really appreciate this, just so you know."

Theo did just that, sitting cross-legged like a little genie... or something more catlike.

He watched Greg watching him and raised an eyebrow as the other boy revealed his distress. "Don't worry about it." he said with a shrug. He put his chin in his hand. "What makes more sense to you? Practical stuff, or reading, or what. There's no point us re-reading that boko if it's not the best way for you to learn."

Greg reached for the book and cast a grin at Theo, "Well, I never really read it the first time," he said, pulling it into his lap and opening it to a random page.

He didn't say anything at first, and then looked up, "I really do get it, about your dad I mean. Mine's terrible too," Greg added, "And I mean bad," and he paused, making a small face, "Just saying," he added as he made a humphing grunt and pushed the book back to the bed.

Theo watched Greg again, about to do a bit more delving into the best way to get Greg to retain what he was reading when the other boy said what he did, Theo's hackles rising immediately.

"He was dead." he said flatly. "How does someone come back from the dead Greg?" he asked. "They don't. That's not my father." Well, that was new.

Theo accepted what Greg said as if he'd been admitting that he was thinking about turning vegetarian.

"I have, yeah." Theo said, not seeing any reason to lie about having done so.

His father might want him to be paranoid and see how every little bit of information could be used against him, and he did, but he just stopped caring sometime early in his childhood. If everyone was a spy for everyone else the way his father said they were, then monitoring everything you said and who you said it to was just delaying the inevitable.

He didn't usually bother and he'd survived this long after all.

Greg kept his eyes on Theo as he spoke. Inside he felt a bit jealous.

How had Theo done it? Greg wondered to himself. He could barely communicate civily with any female, and while he spent much of his time around guys, he had no idea how to approach one. Never mind his confusion as to if he really wanted to try; there was no doubt that he wanted to but he had no idea how to even start. And he expected to be rejected before he even started; Greg was fairly tough, even brutal about some things, but when it came to affairs of the heart he was guarded and very, very vulnerable.

"How did it happen? I mean, it had to build up to it right? I don't expect you just bumped into him and then dragged eachother down a dark hall to snog."

The idea made Greg's groin twitch and he felt himself getting excited at the mental image. It was a fairly hot image, wether it was a boy or a girl Greg imagined.

Theo yawned a little bit, but murmured a sorry that showed it wasn't because he was bored with what Greg was saying.

"Well, he asked me. I said sure." he shrugged again. "It went on for a while, then it stopped. Just one of those things that happens I suppose."

Greg's eyes opened a bit in surprise at the ease, "He just ..asked? Like casually, with no build up or hands holding to it?" and he found himself biting his lip again, and an idea toying in his mind as his heart began to beat faster, "It couldn't have been that simple."

"Prove it. Kiss me Theo," he demanded, and then realizing what a git he sounded like, he repeated softly, "if you want..man...what am I saying?" Greg said, starting to look miserable for the moment, "You don't have to....I'm sorry," and his face fell as he wondered what the hell he'd just done.

If Theo had been a cat his ears would have gone back and his hair would have gone up at Greg's demand.

It was only the other boy's subsequent backing down that calmed him down too and he took pity given the fact that this was obviously a difficult thing for Greg to do. "He asked me out first." he explained. "And then later on he asked for a kiss, and because he liked me and because I liked him, I said yes. It was based on something." As small and juvenile as it had been. "Were you really asking to prove that I would or is this just your curious thing?" he asked.

"Okay, okay. Now that makes loads more sense, Theo. Just..just ignore me. I'm a git with a permanent walking hard-on I think. I...I don't know why I asked that of you," and he found it difficult to look Theo in the face for the moment even as he heart still beat hard in his chest. There was a moment that he had sincerely hoped Theo would take him up on it, and bed over him and kiss him thoroughly, "I shouldn't have put you on the spot like that."

Greg looked miserable, "Forget that I said that, okay? Let's talk about something else," he said, trying to change to subject, "I am not going home this holiday. Are you?"

"Low self-esteem isn't attractive Greg, especially when it's unfounded." Theo mentioned gently. "I understand why you asked that, but there's ways and ways of asking." but enough of that if Greg wanted to change the subject.

He scowled and looked down at the ground just thinking about it. "I don't really have a choice in the matter."

"Who you calling low self-esteem?" Greg growled, his mood becoming defensive, "Just cause I don't know what the fuck to do...," and his initial iritation slowed slightly, "And now I have a bloody clue.......sort of," he grunted, and he shook his head, turning his eyes from Theo.

"Yeah, well I am not going, last I heard. He'll change his mind, I am sure. My mum won't give a shit, as long as they are there," and Greg still looked angry.

He was sore, for doing things poorly, and he turned his head to Theo, "Don't pity me Theo. If I can work on my Charms, I know I can get the other stuff right. And yeah, I asked you cause I was curious," he admitted, still sounding sore. He hadn't realized that he'd shifted the conversation back to that topic.

Theo knew that Greg was getting defensive but it provoked the same reaction in him, making him tense up and the fingers of his hand tensing to go for his wand, just in case.

He didn't address it though as Greg moved the conversation on, allowing it to move past the question of what they were doing over the holidays too. Theo did not want.

"I don't see anything pitiful about you Gregory, don't put words in my mouth." he lowered his hackles a bit. "I know you'll be able to get the stuff right. And like I said about the kiss, there are ways and ways."

Greg laughed a hard sound and then felt some of his anger go, "Thanks for that. And I guess I'll have to wait and figure it out, right?" and Greg felt himself want to laugh more, in a bitter harsh way, "We are a pair aren't we? Sorry if I got a bit harsh there. But I'm far more used to being attacked, and then coming back, swinging."

Greg felt his emotions fade again, and he nodded thoughtfully, "Ways and then ways. I....I think I get it. Maybe," and he looked at Theo, and started to crack a smile, "Okay, I admit it. I don't get it at all. But I will."

"Habit, the greatest killer of independent thought since brainwashing." he remarked, pointedly, but without bite.

Greg gave another laugh, "Fuck yes it is," and he grinned, "Maybe this could be a good thing. At least we get each other," and he grinned more, "So we gonna meet a couple times a week? Study and talk? It could become a habit, right?"

Greg was pleased with himself at the word play. He was not usually the one to grab onto it so easily, or at least, not speak it out loud.
