Dumbledore's Funeral Thread
Who: Anyone there (Feel free to start scenes in comments, or just to have your character pay their respects or disrespects!)
What: Dumbledore's funeral
Where: Hogwarts Grounds, by the lake
When: Today
Warnings: Sadness!

Standing with the other Professors, Minerva wasn't surprised that she could hold back her emotions. She had years of practice, after all, and the last thing she could imagine Albus Dumbledore wanting was her tears, or anyone else's for that matter. Had it been up to him, the song that played would have been jolly - there would have been bright colours and sweets and laughter. No one, though, particularly felt like laughing. She wasn't surprised. Nor was she surprised by the mass of people who had turned up to pay their respects. Looking around at those gathered she couldn't remember the last time the grounds of the school had been so diverse. Hogwarts teachers, staff, and students of course, and various wizards and witches of all ages but beyond that there were ghosts and centaurs filed in next to one another. Even a few merpeople had deigned to make an appearance, and one giant, though both small groups looked more as if they were investigating than mourning.

Albus had been draped in purple velvet - fitting, she thought - and entombed in a white marble sarcophagus beside the lake. Absently, Minerva thought that he would have far preferred this placement for his final resting place if the Giant Squid was still close by. As it was, she thought that here he might be a bit lonely - the only Hogwarts Headmaster to be buried on the grounds. She hoped, during her time at the helm of the school, that she might deserve such an honor.

As the speeches to Dumbledore's memory came to an end, the gathered company stood and began to file past the sarcophagus to pay their final respects, to speak their final silent words to the man they all respected and loved. The haunting sounds of a mournful dirge echoed over the waters of the lake, performed by the Weird Sisters off to the side, their usual wild outfits suitably subdued for the event. They weren't the only guests of note. Wizards and witches from all walks of life, more then one of them some sort of celebrity in the wizarding world, filed past to pay their respects. All of them had been touched, one way or another, but the life or words of Albus Dumbledore.

The sarcophagus gleamed in the late afternoon sunlight, smooth white marble, etched with magical runes and wards, the letters of his name carved across the lid, already worn smooth by the innumerable fingertips that had brushed it as his mourners marched past.

"Daphne Greengrass," Greg mimicked back to her, and he gave a small humored smirk and then let it die, "Yeah, I guess," and he glanced about to see who might be close to them, listening. He didn't exactly care, but he didn't want to call too much attention to himself.

"I thought the old geezer would be about forever," and he got a worried look on his face, worried that he might have pissed her off in some way. He didn't like messing with Daphne. He'd spent many, many hours watching her and studying her, like he did with most of the girls he was close to in proximity. She was beautiful, and could be calculated and cold, the epitome of a Slytherin. He still gravitated to her, and her type; they were like his mother, and on some primal level, he was like any other boy who wanted to find a girl just like dear old mum.

He walked along next to her, and then flustered out, "You look nice today," and then turned a shade of pink at his horror at openly complimenting her, "I mean, like always Daphne."

Daphne & Goyle & OPEN!

Gaze narrowed slightly as he mimicked her, biting down on her tongue to stop from lashing out at him. Daphne was in no mood to get into a verbal spat with someone at the moment.

"It certainly seemed like that, and the way the whole lot is carrying on down there, I imagine his legacy will last much longer." There was a hint of bitterness in her words as she continued up the path. It wasn't that Daphne didn't respect Dumbledore, on the contrary, he was very very powerful. Daphne could only respect Dumbledore that much. His political beliefs were in all the wrong places, and the way that he protected the Gryffindor's sickened Daphne. She couldn't stand favoritism, unless... of course, she benefited from it. The Gryffindor's - especially the Golden Trio - got away with so much. If it was Draco and other Slytherin's they were bound to be expelled, but since it was Harry Bloody Potter? The Boy Who Lived? He could do no wrong.

At the compliment, Daphne registered a look of utter disbelief. Did Gregory Goyle just compliment her? A finely sculpted brow arched towards him, as a sly smirk curled on her lips. Was he suddenly blushing? Daphne wanted to snicker, but all she could just was just smirk and inwardly laugh. It was a bit pathetic, this display before her. The usually bumbling, witless Goyle was actually paying her a compliment? "Oh yes, because mourning clothes are completely flattering." Gloved hands slipped out of her pockets, and slid down the front of her green pea coat, brushing off nonexistent pieces of dust, and wrinkles.

"Regardless," Daphne sighed, "Thank you, Gregory."

Greg turned pinker at her words, "I can't help it. I like the green," he said, turning to look forward so he didn't have to look at her face, "It seemed like a time to talk about something else, besides his dead holiness. I mean, he never cut me and Draco or Vincent a break, like ever. I heard it from my dad enough when he'd get an owl," Greg said, a small scowl passing over his features, "And then I'd feel his wrath when I got home, for singling out the Goyle name. It...it is just as well he's gone."

Greg glanced at her, "I thought I saw your folks there. Mine wouldn't even show. My brothers are off," and his voice dropped in volume, "Doing things I am sure, things for.....for Him," he added, feeling safe at hinting at such a small thing to her. She had a sister; she would understand a little bit, he thought. And he hadn't been told not to talk about it; it just hadn't come up exactly. Why he was mentioning it now, he wasn't quite sure. He thought he might be trying to impress her, a little bit. He was very, very clueless when it came to females.

Daphne & Goyle & OPEN!

Daphne's smirk broadened, for some reason watching Goyle become increasingly uncomfortable left her highly amused. Blue eyes studied the boy once more before looking at the looming castle ahead. "His priorities were never in the right place. The bloody Saint Potter and his mud blood know-it-all, and the blood traitor got away with things that if it came from our House we would be expelled." Rolling her eyes, hands were shoved back into her pockets. "I still stand firm on my belief that it's about time that ancient bag of bones died." Daphne's voice remained low, especially when other students hurried past them. The last thing she wanted to do was draw attention to her political beliefs. It wasn't that Daphne was pro-Voldemort, or Anti-Voldemort. Daphne was pro-herself, she lived for herself and no one else. Her parents bred her to be the perfect socialite heiress with all the pureblooded beliefs. She didn't believe in this cleansing that Voldemort promoted. All she wanted was to be left alone, and not preached at, and told what to believe.

At the mention of her parents Daphne scoffed, "Of course they were there. Make a bloody appearance, put on faces, linger with high society, then disappear once they determined that everyone that mattered saw them." Tossing her hair over her shoulder, a sharp breeze snapped around her, and forced her hands deeper into her pockets. "It's just as well that your parents didn't show up, they didn't miss much. A bunch of mud-bloods, and sympathizers whinging, and sobbing, and carrying on."

Greg reacted to her statements, nodding vigorously as she spoke about the favoritism. He agreed, wholeheartedly, and the fact that Dumbledore always leaned to the side of those three had bothered him for years. Okay, it hadn't bothered him near as much as it had bothered Draco. And what bothered Draco, bothered Greg mainly because he didn't like seeing Draco upset. Because when Draco was upset, Greg got to listen to him. Not that it was so bad; at least Draco paid him attention. But it was still distressing, for Draco and thus for Greg.

At Daphne's last words, Greg couldn't help himself. He started chuckling, in part because she was so blunt and in part because she was absolutely spot on right.

"You certainly nailed that," and he stopped laughing as she started to look cold, "You wanna go in, Daphne? We could get something hot to drink?" and he blanched again, "I mean, I know how we can get some tea or chocolate in the Common rooms, if you want," he added, trying to recover as his face turned red again.

Why was he laughing? Daphne didn't say anything funny, did she? Come to think of it, this was the most Daphne has ever said to Goyle in a long time. The girl was used to a simple acknowledgment in the common rooms, or during classes. Maybe a greeting of some sort, or just a head nod. Daphne wasn't the most social of creatures, so while Pansy Parkinson, and Davis, and that Tatting girl flitted around the common room, gossiping, and giggling like the little social butterflies that they were, Daphne sat back, immersed in her own world. Being the quiet observer kept people away, and left her fiercely independent. She would much rather be left alone then mingling with her housemates. Of course, there were those exceptions, Audrina Runcorn and Astoria - and more recently Nikolas Vaisey.

And now Gregory Goyle?

Why was she even bothering? Could it be the fact that both of them had nothing better to do? Goyle's continuous stammering, and blushing was almost endearing. Wait, that's the word. It was amusing. Was this massive lackey to Draco Malfoy actually trying to spread his wings and go solo, and since when was he so eloquent? Past years, Daphne could only recall grunting, and grumbling and guffawing from the henchmen.

Changes were coming to Slytherin, Daphne was slowly realizing. Even Millicent seemed less like a bumbling troll and more like a well-spoken adult. Was this what seventh year was all about? Growing up and out of those stereotypes placed on them during their first years at Hogwarts? It made Daphne wonder if she was actually shedding her stereotype. That stone wall that was built up years ago still stood tall and proud inside her. She still kept people at arms length, and the only thing improving in her was her talent for the violin.

"Tea sounds perfectly fine," Cheeks began to turn a slight red from the cold. Sliding her hands out of her pockets long enough to pull the collar of her coat up around her neck, "I'm not a big fan of sweets, especially chocolate."

Greg nodded, "Tea it is. I am sure I can get us some," and he moved next to her, seeing the castle coming into sight as they walked more. He buried his hands into his own black coat, and nodded, thoughtfully.

"I like sweets," he said, and then he turned to look at her as he spoke, "I suppose that is not a huge secret. But I heard someone say that chocolate makes you feel like you are in love, or something like that. It sort of made sense at the time. I mean, why I like it so much."

He stopped talking again, as he realized he was talking again, hell sharing with Daphne again. He didn't usually speak with other people; honestly, it was because of Draco that all of these changes were taking place in his life. He had this extra time, and the summer of thinking intensely and well, ideas popped up. And for once, he had the time and the inclination to pursue them.

Greg moved forward as they climbed up the steps and he held the door open for her.

"Brilliant," There was no doubt in Daphne's mind that Goyle would know how to find tea. The boy probably knew his way around the kitchens with his eyes closed.

"Impressive, Gregory. It's called an aphrodisiac, some nonsense that explains hyper sexuality after eating food such as oysters, or artichokes." Waving her hand passively, Daphne brushed by him to step into the front Hall of the school.

"Honestly, it all sounds like a load of rubbish to me, if you like chocolate, then you like chocolate, don't try to blame it on some chemical component found in it." Tugging off her gloves, she shoved them into her pockets. "Besides, if you want to be in bloody love, just drink a potion."

Love was certainly one of those emotions that Daphne was not familiar with. Love required getting close to someone, and if there was one thing Daphne was good at, it was keeping everyone at arms length away from her.

Wait a moment.

Was Daphne actually having this conversation with Goyle? Gregory Goyle?! Arching a brow slightly, she began to unbutton her coat, as those black heels hit the stone of the empty corridor and echoed rhythmically.
