Who: Hermione & Ron.
What: Horcrux research. Yes.
Where: Gryffindor common room.
When: Tonight.
Warnings: TBA.

Ron did, in fact, feel very much like an idiot as he hauled himself up off of his bed - where he'd been slumped over dutifully writing a mind-numbing essay, and since when had homework become a break from anything, anyway? - and stuffed his pen in one of his books to mark his place. The very last thing he should have been doing was encouraging her in thinking she could just say jump. And if there was anything he was more sick of than being bossed around and snapped at, it was the bloody locket. The intelligent thing to do would have been to ignore her and keep on writing.

He trudged down the staircase, looking sour. It wasn't too late, of course. He could walk past - pretend he'd come down to see someone else, or that he'd forgotten something. He could turn right back around, in fact; except now he was standing in full view of the common room, and there was no going back without a decent excuse. He was still trying to formulate one when he stopped in front of where she was sitting, looking blankly down at her.

... Hopeless. A moment later he flopped down on the sofa beside her, looking at the fire. "Well?" he asked peevishly. "What do you want?" As though he hadn't just jumped to it.

And you were already telling me what to do, he thought fondly, but - somehow - remembered to keep it to himself. He smiled down at her. "Wasn't half as good at pushing people around, though. I've learned something, see." He suspected it was the prefect's badge that had done it.

"It's probably from being the youngest boy, or having the twins as brothers," Hermione smirked a little, then it slid into a small smile and she turned enough that she could face him and still be slumped down into the plush cushion. "You didn't have the chance to boss anyone about until you were at school."

"No one at all - just Ginny, anyway." He made a face, which conveniently covered up the shift in his expression that was threatening to betray the fact that he had noticed how much closer she'd come over the past few minutes. He leaned his elbow on the back of the couch and rested his head in his hand, to be that much closer. "And you can see how well that turned out. - Of course, neither did you. And you were a champ at it first year."

She was aware of how close she was. She kept thinking she ought to move away, but he'd move closer just those fractions of inches, and she decided to stay where she was. She smiled instead, because for once she could, and laid the side of her head against the sofa, still facing him. "You never bossed Ginny around. Or, if you did, she never listened."

"Exactly. Such a disappointment of a kid sister. I never got my turn." Something about this was making him feel about as far away from that blasted locket as he ever had been. Unfortunately, it also made him pretty sure he was going to do something stupid. ... Worth the risk, though, he decided, as she relaxed a little further into the couch. He let his hand fall on the cushion between them, fighting back an urge to tuck away one of those flyaways behind her ear. "And then I got to school and had to wait six years."

It put his hand very near to hers, and she found herself squeezing his quickly before pushed back her hair from her face and dropped both hands back into her lap. "And no one to boss about that whole time. I'm surprised you didn't explode."

Ron felt his face start to burn a little, and he ducked his head slightly. "Haven't graduated yet," he pointed out. He still had several months in which to explode. His gaze fell on her hands, and he hadn't finished wondering why she'd pulled away before he was reaching out to take one of them again. His brain was buzzing stupidly. "I might make it to Christmas, maybe."

Hermione's heart beat a little faster, the way it always seemed to when he touched her and it wasn't just to be a friend, or to get her attention in class, or to point out that Draco looked particularly ferret-like today. She felt flushed.

"Well, you'll have someone them, I'm sure. There's always.. garden gnomes?"

"Yeah ... they're good for stress, bless them," he said, more light-headed by the second. He kept her hand, not intending to give it up before he had to. "- But I reckon it'd be better to take it out on someone who could give back," he amended hastily. "You're always welcome at Christmas."

"So that you can take out your frustrations and needs to boss people about on me?" Hermione sounded both amused, and confused, and she was almost certain that Ron didn't mean it logically that way, though his trying to boss her around for once would be funny, unless he expected to win anything at all with it.

But he was still holding her hand in his, and so she didn't quite feel like pointing that out.

"Sure," he said. "I've got about as much chance at winning with you as I have with anyone else." Which was to say, none. But getting bossed around by Hermione seemed infinitely more pleasant than by any of his siblings. It was strange; he was pretty sure he didn't always feel that way. "Or, just - you know. For Christmas. No bossing required."

Hermione fought the urge to point out that none of them knew where they'd be at Christmas. Instead she just nodded, "I told your mum that my parents were leaving the country this year, with everything happening... she's already invited me." And even if she hadn't had to send her parents off, it was safer if she spent as much time around the Order as possible. And she always ended up there, really, though she tried to ignore the face that it felt so much nicer that he was offering.

Good job, mum. "Good." For once, he didn't feel the need to add an explanation - his mother loved having a full house, wasn't happy unless at least three people were sleeping on couches, or that having everyone around when everything was so up in the air was a comfort. He squeezed her hand, letting himself indulge in a couple seconds of thinking how nice it would be to be home for the holidays, and not worrying about any of ... this. "I'll wait til then to explode, then."

Hermione managed to roll her eyes, though watching him when he looked this relaxed for the first time in weeks seemed far more important. "Brilliant. You'll be exploding with frustration and pent up bossiness, and Harry will be exploding with pend up feelings for your sister, and I'll be sent to Azkaban for murdering you both."

"Well, so long as no one's happy." He really didn't want to think about Harry, or his sister. He smiled at her, pulling her hand towards himself. "We can have pie and too much eggnog and listen to people shout at each other - the usual Weasley Christmas. Nobody's been murdered so far, I promise. I'll explode quietly." He knew it was stupid to be talking about things they almost certainly couldn't do. But it felt good.

He pulled at her hand, and somehow she found herself shifting on the sofa so that she was closer to him, tucked in against his side. She'd should have probably felt embarrassed, or have moved, but instead she felt... comfortable. "You? Quiet?" Se would have sounded a little more disbelieving if she didn't sound so content where she was.

"Me," he confirmed, after a breathless moment that seemed much longer than it probably was. He was a little surprised at how good it felt to have her this close. Not that he hadn't though it would feel good - just ... It was supposed to be more difficult, wasn't it? He reached across the short distance between them to tuck a bit of hair behind her ear, to test the situation further. It felt ... fine. "Hard to believe, I know. You won't want to miss it."

Hermione felt warm, almost too warm, and when he tucked her hair back - not like he hadn't done it a hundred times over the years - she forgot to breathe for a moment and then let the breath out in an embarrassing sort of sigh. "I won't," she finally answered, though she wasn't quite sure what she was promising.

It didn't really matter that he wasn't sure what he'd been saying for the past few minutes (or, for that matter, what she'd been saying in return). They were agreed, and that was the only thing that seemed important. He let his hand rest at the side of her neck, and leaned forward just enough that his forehead didn't quite touch hers. "Good," he said, though he was pretty sure he'd said that already. "Can't afford to miss much more."

She'd thought he was going to kiss her - somewhere she still thought he might - and in response her heart was pounding in her chest, again, and blood was rushing in her ears, and she wasn't entirely sure she understood at all the words he was saying because with his hand there, and his face so close, she almost felt like she couldn't breathe.

"I... " She tried to answer, and she scolded herself for sounding ridiculous, because he probably wasn't going to, and still she sounded a little breathless when she answered, "I suppose we can't.."

Another agreement - that was all it took, for him. It felt right. His fingers slid a careful inch to her jaw, and tipped her face up a little. He pressed his mouth to hers, not worrying about whether it was too hard, or not the right way - was that a good thing? wasn't he supposed to be worrying? - and realized through a very pleasant haze that he was still holding her hand. This made so much more sense to him than anything he'd been saying.

Hermione forgot how to breathe, or speak, which was good since her mouth was engaged in other things - very new, very nice things that made her stomach flutter and made her hand clutch on his as she closed her eyes. She wasn't sure how to do this - she didn't even have the benefit of reading those stupid books Parvati and Lavender sometimes read, or their magazines with the headlines that promised the perfect kiss, or how to please your man. She just moved her mouth against his a little, and hoped to Merlin he didn't realize she didn't know what she was doing.

Ron closed his eyes against a brief wave of panic when he felt her move; then he practically slumped in relief as it became clear that she was not, in fact, planning to leave. His arm wound its way a little further around her shoulders. If he could just keep her from going away ... they wouldn't have to go back to researching stupid horcruxes, or doing anything but this. Part of him could hardly believe it - Hermione - finally - even his thoughts were incoherent. Everything seemed pretty well perfect, and he tugged her a little tighter against himself lest he lose it.
