WHO: Wayne and Megan
WHAT: post-trials talk
WHERE: Hufflepuff Common Room
WHEN: Thursday night
WARNINGS: extreme sulking and mild swearing
STATUS: COMPLETE

Wayne hadn't really been trying to avoid Megan. At least, that was the line he kept feeding himself. Of course he wasn't that upset that Megan was Keeper and he was a Beater...

Except he was. He was furious. And he wasn't sure if he was more furious with himself or with her or with Zach or with the stupid Quaffle... It was all too much. And so he trundled into the common room with his guitar, to work out his frustrations in a hopefully constructive manner.

As Wayne entered, Megan was in the process of shuffling cards for an evening match of exploding snap. She'd found a first year who was eager to learn and was in the process of rounding on a second game to hone the younger girl's skills. She'd positioned herself in the common room so that she could see most of the entrances from the basement hall to the dorm corridors. It was only a matter of time that Wayne venture out to civilized surroundings. To say she planned this 'chance' meeting was... an understatement.

Megan Jones wasn't so socially retarded that she was completely oblivious to the tension between them. It'd been present all week - she knew it. In fact, despite what should have been a victorious hoorah following the posting of quidditch positions... she wasn't as excited as she felt she should have been. And because of the mixed feelings she felt her emotions had ventured onto being slightly annoyed by Wayne's response to the entire thing. Clearly, his dissatisfaction for the situation was bringing her down!

"Oi!" she called after the boy with the guitar. Jumping up from her seat she handed the cards over to a third year boy who was calling dibs on 'winner.' Trying her best to seem unconfrontational she awkwardly gave Wayne a smile and fidgeted slightly with her hands before shoving them in her pockets. "Can we talk?" Megan asked - her tone mixed with a hint of exhausted desperation.

Wayne cringed at the echo of Megan's call to him, and froze in his tracks. He turned to face her, shifting the guitar on his back, and let out a slight sigh.

"Um... yeah, all right, I suppose," he finally said, his eyes meeting the tips of his shoes rather than her eyes. He motioned towards the fireplace. "I was going over there, if you want to..."

Megan made distinct note of his avoidance of eye contact. A slight tightening of her insides began and she felt as though approaching him wasn't a good idea. She glanced to where Wayne pointed and nodded. Taking in a deep inhale as she shrugged in response.

The inhale seemed to calm her nerves. They had to have this conversation. The sooner the better. She'd given him time to stew, obviously, and it didn't seem to help them any. She figured the best way to deal with this situation was to ... talk it out. They had to get this resolved before practices. Heaven forbid this awkwardness continue while they're expected to play a match!

"Soo," she started with her first few steps toward the fireplace, her eyes to the ground. "I know you're mad at me...but...I'd like to know how mad exactly?" She claimed herself a seat trying her best to keep as to the point as possible offering Wayne her full attention as she settled into her seat. Jumping around at this point seemed silly.

Wayne took a seat across from Megan, pulling the guitar across his chest and absently strumming it. "I just..."

He shook his head and finally looked her in the eyes. "I just don't really know who I'm mad at, really," he finally said. "I thought I had it wrapped up, yeah? I thought..."

He sighed, and looked around frustratedly. He was thinking too hard about what he wanted to say, trying too hard to craft his response. His eyes met hers again, pleadingly, as if he wanted her to just pull the thoughts out of his head so that he wouldn't have to say them.

"This is going to sound so bad, and I'm sorry... I just wanted to win. It's been me versus you for that spot in the squad for as long as we've been able to ride brooms, and I just wanted it so badly."

Megan listened as Wayne searched for the proper phrasing. When he mentioned their being at odds over that spot for years seemed to entice a small bemused smirk toward her lap. She understood Wayne's side of it. She did. It was a fair assumption to say that if the outcome had been the other way around...they'd likely be having the same conversation but Megan would be the one doing the talking.

"I know you did," the girl nodded bringing her eyes from her lap back to Wayne. "But I'm not going to apologize for getting it," she tried to sound as honest and un-gloating as possible. "Just like I'm not expecting you to congratulate me. I just..." she paused a moment to find the right words. She shrugged and shook her head as her eyes darted about the room.

"I just don't know why were both so stupid. Why do we get so bloody touchy about this? Sports are supposed to be fun, aren't they?"

Wayne shook his head, and couldn't help letting out a small snicker. "They are," he said. "And we really should be saving all this for the other team, yeah? Instead of fighting with each other..."

He sat back in his chair. "I'm being an idiot about all this, aren't I? I should just be glad I made the squad, shouldn't I?" He shrugged. "And we get to be teammates, yeah? That's good, right?" Each statement came out as if he was trying to convince both of them that it was all going to be fine.

She was glad she got him to smile. But as he spoke Megan felt as though he were mocking her...which didn't make her feel so hot. Perhaps she shouldn't have been so blunt with her last statement. Trying to keep her game face on she smiled at him and said, "It's going to be great."

"But you can be angry as long as you need to," she added quickly. "I understand, I honestly do. I'd just like an estimation of about when you'll be done stewing?" She grinned at him - obviously unable to hold back a minor tease. "It's no fun being your friend when you're resenting me, you know."

"I don't resent you, Jonesie," Wayne said, setting his guitar to the side and leaning forward in the chair. "And I'm done. I've been acting like a stupid, spoiled arse all week and it's not doing anyone a bit of good."

He bit his lip as he retreated into his own head for a moment. Kicking himself for not making Keeper was one thing, but lashing out at Megan for it was just wrong. It was time to try to repair some of the damage he'd caused during his week of silent sulking.

"I'm sorry I avoided you," he finally said, his gaze dropping to the floor. "I'm sorry I didn't congratulate you like you deserved, because you're a bloody brilliant Keeper and you deserve to play."

He raised his head again, and grinned. "And I'm sorry I had to make you work so hard to get the spot."

Megan snorted a laugh in response. "Yeah, thanks for that," she replied. "It made us both look pretty stellar." Truth was Megan hadn't expected to get the spot this term. So much so she'd lost sleep over it the week leading up to trials. Wayne was a brilliant flier and he had some fantastic skills when it came to keeping. That moment when she realized she'd blocked that one extra ball more than Wayne....was...FANTASTIC! There's no point denying it.

It was almost the same satisfaction one would feel if winning against Hercules in an arm wrestling match.

"But seriously, I'm glad we're on the team together," she'd added to him. "It's going to be a brilliant year.... so long as you secretly don't plot to hit a bludger my way the night before a match." She mockingly narrowed her eyes and point at him, "I'll suspect something then..." Her grin enticed and innocent wink.

Wayne laughed heartily. "I know better," he said. "I'd get a Quaffle to the back of my head if I dared try it." For all his sulking, Wayne did feel the right choice had been made. Megan was more graceful on her broom and had quicker reflexes, and she could make saves Wayne wouldn't have been able to pull off in a million years. The other houses' Chasers were going to have their hands full...

"Come on," he said, standing up and offering Megan a hand up. "Let's get your cards back so you can beat me in exploding snap."

The fact that he actually laughed this time seemed to encourage Megan to fall back into their normal interaction. It was over, right? Least, Wayne seemed to be able to fake it well enough that she wouldn't make it into anything more than it had to be. Good terms once again!

She took his hand and stood before moving back toward the table she'd left most of her things. "You sure you want to play?" she asked looking over her shoulder to him. "It might get nasty again."
