Wayne didn't support burning Catholics. Or anyone, for that matter. But fireworks and carnival food--that, he could get behind. And what better place for that than the annual Bonfire Night fireworks at Alexandra Palace? Every year on Guy Fawkes Night, 5 November, the skies over his home part of London would be illuminated by a pyrotechnic display that delighted Wizards and Muggles alike. And this year, he was glad to be sharing it with someone other than his parents...
"Toffee apple?" A tiny blonde girl held out the treat on a stick to Wayne, reserving the one with a bite already taken out in her other hand for herself. "Nothing like food that requires dental work afterwards, eh?"
Wayne took the apple and bit into it. "So how does it all compare to home?" he said, gesturing around with his food. "The food, the carnival rides, the crowd... It must be a bit like Edinburgh, yeah?"
"We never really went in for the big public displays up home," the girl said, taking another bite. "I always ran off with the neighborhood kids, trying to set off fireworks in the street. Mum would always track us down. 'Alison, put those down; you're gonna blow off your bloody fingers and I'm not going to take you to hospital if you do.'" She giggled. "Those were the days."
Wayne laughed. "Yeah, I wish I remembered my mum yelling at me so fondly." He looked around, checking out what else was available from the food stalls. "You want a drink with that?"
"Yeah, a coffee or something," Alison said, shuffling to pull her coat closed. "That's the only problem with this hillside--the wind just cuts through you." She chuckled. "Talk about memories of Edinburgh."
Wayne grinned. "Yeah, it's a bit chilly, but it'll be worth it, I promise." He started off for the nearest stall. "I'll be right back."
