WHO: Shannon MacFusty & Rolf Scamander
WHAT: adorableness
WHERE: Rolf's house
WHEN: Tuesday evening
WARNINGS/RATING/STATUS: None/PG?/Ongoing

Rolling her eyes good naturedly, Shannon shut her journal and meandered downstairs to the kitchen. Rolf was around somewhere, likely grading papers or something school related. This time of year had never been very busy for her, work wise, this year was worst of all. She found herself, stupidly, dwelling on Kirley. Every time he'd disappear from her mind, he'd pop up somewhere, an entry or a comment or a mention by Leigh. Logically, she knew she was being ridiculous. They'd only known each other for a short time and hadn't developed a deep enough connection even to go away together, let alone for her to still be upset about what had happened after all this time.

Yet, she was. It wasn't so much Kirley that upset her, but how she'd felt around him. It had been like before the attack, she'd been happier, lighter, and that change had affected Rolf, he'd seemed less weighed down by guilt. She hated that she apparently needed a man to make herself happy and shook her head as she started getting down mugs and setting the water to boil. Maybe it wasn't that she needed a man specifically, but just a person. It wasn't necessarily a weakness to need help with things. Especially considering what she'd been through.

She just needed to get out more. Even if it was just to a concert or a pub, just to be out somewhere, not stuck moping around the house. Everything was made worse by cabin fever.

The kettle whistled and Shannon set to preparing the tea, placing biscuits on a plate and balancing everything on a tray. Winding her way through dogs, she made her way to Rolf's study. She pushed the door open with her hip, her greeting dying in her throat at the sight that greeted her.

Rolf, surrounded by parchment, fast asleep on his desk. She smiled, faintly, and crossed the room, setting the tray on his desk and gently petting his hair. "Rolf," she whispered, unable to keep from ducking slightly and pressing a kiss to his shaggy head. "Wake up, I made tea."

It wasn't that grading was boring or tedious or simply unexciting, Rolf actually didn't mind taking the time to sit down and read the same responses and attempts repeatedly. It was just warm in his study and cold outside and his head had been starting to hurt, it had just seemed like a good idea to lay his head down for a moment.

Shannon's kiss and voice roused him, causing him to blink his eyes open after a moment. He gave a quiet grunt and sat up, parchment clinging to him for a second. "Snap," he acknowledged smiling sleepily and running a hand over his face. "Tea? Sounds perfect. I could use the pick me up."

No matter what else was going on, just the mere presence of Rolf never failed to make her happier. She mirrored his smile, hers slightly wider and tugged a comfy chair from beside the window to next to the desk. Allowing him to move his papers, she placed the tea tray in front of him and settled into the armchair, pulling her feet up and curling up.

"Good dream?" she asked, reaching out and taking her mug, allowing the heat to spread to her hands before taking a sip.

"I'm not sure," he said with a shrug. "All I can remember is dragons and pie," he tried to recall the rest of the details as he took the other mug and sipped. "Which I suppose is usually a lot like my good dreams, yeah."

Snuggling into the chair, Shannon mournfully wriggled her sockless toes before attempting to tug the blanket that had covered the chair from underneath her without getting up. "No nightmares about ungraded papers chasing you about the house?"

Rolf chuckled warmly, glad he'd been woken by tea and Snap. "No, although," he rooted around in the stack for a moment and pulled out a sheet he'd already marked up. "This one's interpretation of a dugbog could haunt you for a few nights. I think it has two heads," he squinted at the paper and nodded. "Not a first year either. Fifth."

Shaking her head, Shannon grinned and peered at the parchment Rolf held aloft. "I don't know how you do it, Critter," she said, finally putting down her tea to stand and free herself from the blanket. "I don't think I'd be able to put up with kids like that." She settled back down and wrapped the blanket around herself, tucking it under her toes. "You have the patience of... someone really, really patient."

"Well, I honestly believe he was really trying," Rolf surveyed the pitiful sketch again and shook his head. "It's easy to find the patience when you know they are at least trying. It was a sad attempt but it was at least an earnest attempt. "It's the ones that are there because they couldn't leave their schedule blank and thought it'd be easier than Arithmancy that try the patience." He let out a soft sigh and rolled his eyes, taking another sip. He had a good few that matched that description and he wasn't sure which of them was waiting for their OWL exams and the opportunity to drop electives more anxiously.

"That's almost worse though," Shannon disagreed, taking a sip of her tea and reaching for a biscuit. "If they're that stupid, there isn't much that you can do for them. The ones who aren't trying, though, you might be able to inspire some sort of response in them. If they're just stupid, there's really no hope."

"Maybe," Rolf tossed the paper with the others. "Sketching doesn't have to mean you're stupid if you can't do it. Being able to draw a believable picture is one thing but it really can't compare to being able to defend yourself from one with attacked. Can you really imagine in that situation that stopping to go 'Wait! I need the practice!' and pulling out the parchment would help you any?"

Shrugging, Shannon dipped her biscuit into her tea. "Do you really think these kids are going to be attacked by dugbogs any time soon?" She took another sip of her tea, then set the mug on his desk and snuggled under her blanket. "Is that how you're teaching?" she asked, genuinely interested and wondering if her own attack was fuelling his teaching style. "To keep them safe from things?"

"No, of course not. I haven't even considered bringing dugbogs in so the chances are very slim." He laughed and helped himself to a biscuit. "But that is the point of the class isn't it? Learn not just about but how to handle different creatures?" It didn't make much sense to him to teach the description of magical creatures but not how to deal with them, all their good, bad and frightening traits. "You'd rather I not teach them to keep safe?" He raised an eyebrow at the question, slightly amused at the conversation.

"Well, no, of course not." Shannon shook her head and picked absently at a thread on the blanket. "But it's Care of Magical Creatures, not defence against them." she quirked her lips to the side and continued, even though she knew he didn't like it when she joked like this. "You could do a class on how you make my tea."

Rolf stared at Shannon, well aware she was just trying to take the piss and had to really resist taking the bait. She knew that 'care' meant handling and that some creatures needed more forceful handling...lest the eviscerate you. "Isn't that what they have divination for?" He joked, dipping his biscuit in his tea.

"Variety is the spice of life, Scamander." Shannon said, her face serious, but a smile playing at the corner of her mouth. "I just think it's an interesting teaching tact. I'm sure you're approaching it with the correct attitude but you run the risk of just frightening the little buggers."

"I always favoured fennel," he quipped, taking another sip. "Interesting?" He really didn't understand what she was going on about. He didn't think his approach to the class was anything but straight forward. He was exposing his students to the wide variety of magical creatures, based on the students' years and the creatures classifications, and how to handle them, whether that meant knowing whether they made wonderful domestic pets or required serious caution and a defensive mindset. What else could he possibly be teaching in the class. "And the 'little buggers' like to be frightened now and then," he shrugged. "If I showed them nothing but flobberworms and horklumps they'd label me the worst professor ever. And I probably would be come to that."

Shrugging, Shannon burrowed further under the blanket. "You could never be the worst professor ever," she assured him. She was certain Rolf, with his good nature and infinite patience, was an amazing teacher, one she'd've liked to have when she was in school. She grinned suddenly, eyeing the distance between herself and her mug of tea and sighing slightly, deciding she was more comfy than thirsty. "In fact, I'm sure you probably have several students that are quite enamoured of you."

Rolf raised an eyebrow and watched Shannon try and burrow further under her blanket. "I do find myself rather fascinating," he joked, nudging her tea closer to her. "To those that know any better," he added with a wink. He might have exciting stories and scars but it was hard to call yourself fascinating when you were sitting at home falling asleep at a desk.

Extracting one arm from the blanket, she plucked her tea up and took a long sip. "I don't find you entirely boring," she defended him against himself, staunchly. "You're just the right amount of boring!"

"I would have been happy with a 'Rolf, come off it, you aren't boring,' you know?" He shook his head and finished his biscuit, brushing the crumbs off his lap. Across the room the dogs were curled up on the floor in the tense, acutely aware sleep that only dogs can achieve. They appeared dead to the world but he knew the moment he patted his leg they'd both rush over for the attention. "Heeey," he muttered softly, scratching their heads when they responded just as expected. "And what does the right amount of boring even mean?"

Shannon watched him for a moment, smiling softly. Sure, she had family, who she loved and who loved and supported her, but she'd be lost without Rolf. "Not many people would be content to just sit with me and drink tea. They'd want to go out and do things. But," she held up a finger. "The same people who would be content to not leave the house are not the ones who are going to go out and get drunk with my cousin and me and get a tattoo."

Tugging her hand out from under the blanket, she exposed the ink on the inside of her wrist and grinned. "See? The perfect amount of boring!"

Rolf chuckled and pulled open a drawer, rooting through for a stray treat for the dogs. "Only you would manage to point at spontaneous tattoos and heavy drinking and still somehow work in the label boring." He smiled warmly, and happened on a small bag of biscuits pulling out a couple and feeding them to furry two thirds of his captive audience.

"Good boring!" She heaved a melodramatic sigh and leaned back in her chair. "Don't you listen when I talk?" Watching him for a moment, she tugged the blanket up to her nose and stared over the edge. "You're perfect," she said again, after a pause. She didn't usually express to Rolf how much she loved him, she didn't feel there was a need. He knew her, he knew how she felt, so why bother saying it? But every once in a while, she knew, it was good to appreciate him aloud.

"No, I don't," Rolf played up a straight face, keeping it calm and passive as he blew off her Drama. "Sometimes I hear this funny whistling sound but...that's all." He allowed a smirk but it grew into a smile when he glanced over at her, hidden under a blanket.
