WHO: Susan Bones & Ernie Macmillan.
WHAT: A rather tense moment in their friendship.
WHERE: The Apothecary Greenhouse.
WHEN: Close to closing time.
RATING/STATUS: PG - I can't picture it going up much higher than that. / Open to Ernie Macmillan.

Susan was frustrated and angry and so bloody confused that her head felt like it was going to fall off. Susan never thought that it would get this complicated this quickly and she never wanted to hurt anyone in her whole entire life. This is what she got for being selfish for once in her life. After scribbling down a final note to Marcus, Susan closed her journal for the evening and went about getting ready to close the Apothecary. Susan was upset that after Ernie told her he wasn't going to talk to Marcus, he turns around and lashes out at him. At least, that what it seemed like to her, after all, what could Ernie have possibly said to Marcus to make him that bothered and question her? Running her fingers through her hair, she sighed and moved through the shelves rearranging jars that were misplaced and marking some that needed to be refilled. Her mind was anywhere but on the work in front of her. Fingers plucked jars and boxes from their shelves, as she moved them to the counter to be cleaned out and refilled and replenished. Luckily, Tuesdays were always slow on orders, so most of her restocking was done on Tuesdays.

Stacking up a few empty jars, she moved through the shop and into the backroom to clean them out. Turning on the faucet, she rolled up the sleeves to her pale yellow and black checked shirt and grabbed the bar of soap from the dish. Fingers were coated with dirt, and left smudgy fingerprints on the edge of the basin as she worked the tops off the jars and piled them off to the side. A little bit of housework would do her good, at least with housework she could let her mind wander and not really have to put forth too much effort in cleaning. Besides, after everything that happened, a good scrubbing was what Susan felt like she needed. She needed to clear out her mind just as much as she needed to clean out the jars.

Bright auburn curls framed her face and fell in her dark green gaze as she took out all her pent up frustration out on the jars. Scrubbing them until they were perfectly spotless and then scrubbing them more. Her mind just kept playing over the past few months in her head; the attempted robbery, the breaking off the engagement, the date with Marcus, the reaction Ernie had, the second date with Marcus, and now the unveiling of Marcus to Ernie. Susan knew in the long run this was for the best. Susan just wished she didn't have to hurt Ernie in the process. Of course she was upset about having to be selfish, but a girl as selfless as her had the right to call the shots once in a while. If she was meant to be with Ernie, she would never had any doubt in her mind to begin with, she never would have implied that they really shouldn't get married, and she would still be planning a wedding. She knew in her heart that whatever her and Ernie have, if it's meant to happen, it will.

After closing the journal before him, Ernie couldn't help but have the desire to visit Susan at that very moment. He was almost certain that she would be tending in the greenhouse, hard at work. That was something he was hoping though. Was it bad that he missed her every single moment as the days rolled by? He didn't think so, only hoping that she thought of him every once a while. However, Ernie couldn't help but remain jealous and highly upset about the situation that was thrusted before him. Knowing that he had every right to feel that way about it all, he honestly didn't feel the least bit bad the way that he approached Flint through journals. Anyone else would have appreciated the truthfulness of everything that he had stated that evening. In fact, someone like the quiddich playing troll had no right to be around a woman like Susan. It was his opinion, and nothing would make Ernie change his mind otherwise.

Nothing seemed to be going the way that he hoped, even with changing quite a bit in his life. However, it didn't seem as though Susan even lifted a head to even notice the significantly less hours that he had spent at work, the withdrawels occurred shortly after the official statement had been made. That was done for her. Only for her. Every chance that Ernie attempted to spend time with his ex-fiancee, and his best friend for basically all of his life, she seemed to be doing other things. Not having a clue on where her relationship stood with Marcus as a whole, or where it progressed to currently, he had almost expected the worse. It was difficult not to think such thoughts, but they were within his mind. Easily not accepting the new union or even making an attempt. That he was quite certain would never happen.

Did she even realize that she hadn't been herself lately? Susan had tried to taken up the art of lying and covering up for something that Ernie had thought she was ashamed of. He didn't enjoy any obvious changes, especially since he knew it was all because of Flint. A part of him had thought he had cursed or hexed her in someway, making a mental note to look out for any clues of the sort.

Apparating to a safe location near the apothecary, Ernie had pushed the door open. The welcoming bell was easy to hear as he searched for Susan automatically. Eyes checked every corner and aisle for the woman that occupied his thoughts. "Susan?" he called out finally, figuring that the quiet approach hadn't been successful as quick as he would have liked. Allowing his head to turn as he continued to look for her, he could only hope that everything between them worked out. Maybe it was a bit foolish to think they would get back together easily like previous times. Confidence had nipped him in the bud more then a couple of times in his life, but if he actually lost Susan to someone else, Ernie didn't know what he would do. To be honest, he didn't have the faintest idea if he would want to be around her if the worst happened.

He was in love with her. Didn't she see that through everything?

Shrugging her shoulders, she shook her head to get her hair out of her eyes as she rinsed out the first of the jars. Head lifted at the sound of the bell, but it was quickly drowned out by the running water. Glancing down at her soapy dirty hands, she debated going out to the front of the shop like that, but decided it against it. Ear perked up at the voice calling out to her, cheeks flushed slightly as she recognized that voice. Ernie Macmillan. Merlin, why did he have to come now? She was all ready feeling flustered and confused, having Ernie there to likely confront her was something she didn't want. Wincing slightly, she could all ready feel a stress-induced headache coming on.

"I'm back here, Ernie." She called out over the running water as she placed the clean jar on a shelf above the sink to dry off. Plucking up another jar, she held it under the hot running water to let a sticky green substance uncake itself from the sides of the glass. Running an apothecary was not a pretty job, most of the time Susan's hands were stained different colors from the potion ingredients. Her hands were scarred from working with caustic materials, and while she aired out most of the sulfuric, rotting cabbage smells, some of it couldn't be cleaned out. Susan also learned that she needed to have a special wardrobe while working. While magic helped with some of the stains that came with working, others didn't come out so easily.

Dressed in a pair of faded jeans, they looked distressed and worn in from numerous wearings. A few ragged holes covered them as they hung on her hips, threatening to fall, but somehow managing to stay up. Her shirt showed off her Hufflepuff pride with yellow and black checks. Despite not being at Hogwarts any more, she still had pride for her house. All the Bones' were former Hufflepuff's, why shouldn't Susan be proud of her family's House?

At the sound of Ernie approaching, Susan lifted her gaze from the jar, to look over her shoulder towards him. A tiny smile curled on her lips, as she quickly looked back at the dirty jar in the sink full of bubbles and soap. "I wasn't expecting you. Is everything all right, Ernie?"

A bit of time had passed that had made it obvious that Susan hasn't been towards the front of the store. Of course, he had gone in the back plenty of times without any permission, but Ernie didn't want to overstep any boundaries or scare the red-headed woman to pieces, especially since it seemed as though she had been alone within the shop. It was her voice calling out from the back that he felt more at ease to make his way back towards her. Even though they had seen each other plenty of times before, Ernie couldn't help but feel slightly nervous, as the preverbial butterflies hit the sides of his stomach. That's how much he was terrified at the fact that he might lose Susan, whom had been his entire life since the moment they spoke of their deep feelings for each other. How everything changed in a matter of days, he hadn't the slightest clue.

Ernie brushed his way towards the back and through the open door, catching sight of Susan allowing a smile to play against his lips for a bit. Taking a few more steps towards her and watching the way she worked, he almost wished that she'd stop what she had been doing to give him some sort of physical greeting. Surely, he was still wanted, right? Merlin, Ernie truly hoped so. "Hello, Susan," he replied a few moments to announced his presence, keeping his gaze upon her. Noticing the tiny smile on her lips, before quickly looking away. It didn't feel all too good to be standing there and not really being greeted all that properly, wondering if she had noticed the change witin her.

Shoving his hands into his pockets in order not to accomplish anything else in his mind that Susan might not have wanted, before bitting his bottom lip. "Nothing is techincally wrong at the moment. I just wanted to see you. After all, you did say that you wanted to spend sometime together," he said rather meekly. Of course, nothing be wrong was a bit of a lie, but that wasn't something that Ernie even tried to hide. Was it selfish that he wanted the old Susan back? It was plain to see that Flint had affected her in a not so bright sort of way. A part of him wanted to ask if he was wanted, but held back from doing so. It hurt more then he was willing to allow with the way that she treated everything. If the tables were turned and a strange woman came into his life, Ernie would never persue it.

"That is alright, yes?" he asked, never feeling so uncertain with Susan before in his life. Frankly, that terrified him as well.

"Of course that's all right, Ernie." Susan said softly, giving him another smile. "I was just wondering if something was wrong." Shrugging slightly, Susan rinsed off the jar that she was cleaning and placed it on the shelf to dry. Grabbing a towel, she finally turned to face him, wiping off her hands. Green eyes studied him closely, he looked so uncomfortable, and nervous. It was almost like they were back at Hogwarts, and the awkward unsureness surrounded them. Glancing down at the towel, Susan suddenly felt a pang of guilt in her chest. She hated that she was making Ernie feel this way, but she knew this was how it was going to be - at least for a little while.

Why wasn't Susan allowed to date freely? All she's ever known was Ernie. He was her first everything, and she wanted to be sure that he was the right one before she actually went through with marriage. Besides, she was young and she wanted to try about other possibilities. Ernie surely understood that, right? He didn't want her to feel pressured into marriage and she didn't want to be forced into marriage when she knew she was questioning it every step of the way. Besides, Marcus was actually showing a side of him that she never thought possible. All through her years at Hogwarts he was such a brute, a troll of a bully and just cruel to her friends. Now, though? Now he was showing her a side that seemed human, a side that wasn't caring and compassionate and patient. The thought of Marcus brought her hand up to her neck to feel for that necklace that he gave her on her birthday. However, she stopped once she realized she took that necklace off.

Clearing her throat, she looked down at the towel in her hands, before tossing it onto the edge of the sink and pushing off from the sink. "Would you like some tea?" Brushing past him, she smiled and fixed his collar before moving into the green house. A few of the plants perked up at the sight of Susan, which made her smile even broader. Her plants were her life, there was no doubt about it. While others were willing to judge her plants didn't know better, especially magical plants. They responded better than regular non-magical plants.

"How is work, Ernie? I thought you would be working today." She said almost as an after thought.

There were a handful of things that were ultimately wrong that had passed on by for a few weeks now. Even though Ernie understood that Susan had no desire to rush into marriage. The union with Marcus Flint was something that stung more then he would ever dream of revealing. She was being selfish with everything, especially since there was someone that was willing to give her everything and treat her the way a woman ought to be treated. A quidditch player couldn't give her exactly what she wanted. At least, in Ernie's mind one couldn't do it. They were always off at practices and not to mention the fact that the troll had a baby on the way with another female were two good reasons. Who was to deny the fact fully with outmost trust that he wouldn't go out and do the samething the next day, or the times that they were apart. It was different for Ernie, especially with the fact that his eyes only saw one woman and she was standing before him. Always.

Not noticing that his apperence had wavered on to the nervous side of things, Ernie kept his gaze upon Susan. She was utterly beautiful, even when she was only tidying up the shop. There was no one that could ever compare. "When I'm with you, nothing is wrong," he stated honestly. Of course, they were going through a rough patch, but he was keeping his hopes high that they eventually would be back together, sooner rather than later. Together with normal conversation, everything did seem fine, not counting the feeling of his stomach accomplishing backflips. He couldn't deny that he wished that there were more physical contact between them though.

"Tea sounds lovely," he responded rather quickly, feeling himself calm down after what he had thought would have became a tense situations just minutes prior. It seemed as though he had let the what ifs consume his thoughts more than he should. Things were still decent with them, including the confusion that surrounded them as a whole. Feeling himself bite his bottom lip slightly as Susan fixed his collar, Ernie had to contain himself fully, especially with the thoughts running through his mind. A kiss wasn't something he was about to steal, even if she had been that close to him.

Composing himself, Ernie continued to follow a little ways behind Susan into the greenhouse, doing his best to be respectful of what she desired. As he glanced around at the work that she accomplished within, the question was something he didn't expect being asked. It only had been a week ago that he announced the new schedule for work that he had been hell bent on keeping for her. That only showed that Susan wasn't paying much attention towards him. "I alreaady worked my shift. These days, I'm only working to five in the afternoon. I have more time," he added, omitting for you from his words.

"How sweet," A slight pink flushed on her cheeks, as she opened a cupboard near one of the work areas to reveal tea cups, saucers, creamers and a sugar bowl. Why Susan kept a tea closet in the green house was beyond anyone's guess. However, the fact that she set up a section of the green house to actually have a few chairs and a table should show that Susan spent most of her time in the green house. She also charmed that section of the green house to stay warmer during the cold seasons, and allow a section of the green house to accommodate the plants that enjoyed warmer climates. Pulling down a worn out tin from the top shelf, she looked at the label, before wrinkling her nose and placing it back on the shelf.

"Oolong should do nicely this afternoon," She said more to herself than to Ernie. Motioning to the chairs and table set up a few feet away, she glanced at Ernie. "Please, have a seat." Grabbing two tea infusers, she scooped out some of the tea leaves and placed them into the tea pot. Hands deftly reached for her wand, flicking it at the tea pot, steam immediately began to rise from the spout and the sweet aroma of the black tea began to fill the green house. The scent mixed with the smells of the flowers, some of them shuddering against the scent, others opening their petals. Smiling, she ran her fingers over the petals of one the flowers which seemed to enjoy the smells of the oolong tea.

"I'm glad you're not working too hard, Ernie." Glancing over her shoulder, she watched him briefly before turning back to the task at hand. "Though, you have a very important job, are your superiors upset with you?" Placing the tea pot on a tray, she grabbed two tea cups and saucers and placed them next to the creamer and sugar bowl. If it wasn't obviously all ready, Susan was the ideal hostess. She knew how to set a table, and she knew how to serve. She was a horrible cook, and it usually put her mother to shame each time she tried to cook for them. But her father knew she had the Bones blood, and that meant burning water, and failing at anything culinary.

It was a shame that Ernie couldn't visably view Susan's cheeks turning slightly pink. The gesture would have been good for his morale in their current situation, especially to know that he could still make her feel a certain way after all of the time that had passed. Even though it hadn't done a whole lot of good to simply keep his gaze on her, a part of him couldn't help it. They had been a part more then he would have liked to admitt, even to himself, and slowly he was realizing what she referred to during their conversation. He missed every single thing about her, more so that he couldn't exactly be around her as much as he would like.

It was also true with how an old saying had stated, made so many years ago. One didn't know exactly what they had until it was gone. Susan wasn't techincally gone. She was still in his life, but through the lonely sleepless nights, Ernie began to realize how correct that statement had become for him. The less hours that he placed within work, the more he fully knew that he had to make a change for Susan, if he was going to get her back. A light heart consumed him, knowing that they would eventually would, Ernie did his best not to look down about the situation that occurred between them.

"I haven't had Oolong in quite a while. In fact, I only have it with you," he replied, watching her make the tea before him. Ernie hadn't even noticed that he was still standing until she made a comment about taking a seat. Blinking a little bit to regain composure, he lowered himself into the chair and placed his hands upon his thighs for safe keeping, trying hard not to rap his fingers against himself. He wasn't the type to be impatient. Oh, no. If he had performed that slight moter function, it was more so because of his nerves then anything else. It had almost felt as though they returned to their roots, started over again. He felt as though a part of his feelings had to remain hidden, like they did back within Hogwarts. What an uneasy feeling that slowly became to be.

Although he knew his occupation had been important, especially since half of the crew hadn't contained the knowledge of half of the things that he could do, but it was for the best. Thankfully, his boss halfily agreed with him on the choice. "No, they're not. They sort of enjoyed the idea. As much as they do make me feel welcomed in my position, I do work a tad bit too much and they don't want me to over exhaust myself," he continued to explain the situation. Work wasn't something he wanted to talk to Susan about, especially with thoughts of making everything work between them a clear priority. She was the main reason that the hours had been cut down significantly. "If they need it, I don't mind staying later then required. We have more time to spend together now, if you'd like."

"I do hope all is well with you too," he stated, asking more then the general without using the direct words.
