As long, as jarring and as eventful as the day had been, Ron wasn't about to let it stretch past five o'clock. He'd been looking forward to this for ages ... and he couldn't be late to meet Hermione because of work. It would set a terrible precedent, and he was sure she would never forget it. And so he dropped it all at the stroke of five, returned to his apartment to finish packing (in enough of a hurry that he had to shrink and unshrink his bag twice to get it right), change, add her gift to his luggage, and head off to her flat to meet.
This was the first time in a few days that he'd had time to feel Verity's comments, of all things, weighing on him. Six years was a long time, and although he knew it hadn't been six years entire, not really ... that didn't make him feel any better. He wasn't sure what it was supposed to mean, or what it meant he was supposed to do. He thought that recently he'd been doing things pretty right, actually, but it wasn't like he'd never been proved wrong before. The day's dredging up of things that he had been happy to enough to hope were gone didn't help to bolster his confidence any. It brought back all sorts of memories, of things they'd overcome together and things they hadn't, and, as such subject matter always did, it made him feel the edge of that anger that had stayed with him for far too long after the war had ended.
But that wasn't what he was going to think about now - that wasn't the point of getting away. He shoved it firmly out of his mind as he rapped on her door. He was going to have a few days to think about her, and not about whatever else anyone thought he should be concerned with. If he was doing something wrong, he would figure it out. He had so far. But for the moment, going away with her seemed undeniably right.
