Who: Ron Weasley & Hermione Granger
What: Vacation!
Where: Starting in London; then Lyndhurst/New Forest
When: Thursday evening
Rating/Warnings: TBA

As long, as jarring and as eventful as the day had been, Ron wasn't about to let it stretch past five o'clock. He'd been looking forward to this for ages ... and he couldn't be late to meet Hermione because of work. It would set a terrible precedent, and he was sure she would never forget it. And so he dropped it all at the stroke of five, returned to his apartment to finish packing (in enough of a hurry that he had to shrink and unshrink his bag twice to get it right), change, add her gift to his luggage, and head off to her flat to meet.

This was the first time in a few days that he'd had time to feel Verity's comments, of all things, weighing on him. Six years was a long time, and although he knew it hadn't been six years entire, not really ... that didn't make him feel any better. He wasn't sure what it was supposed to mean, or what it meant he was supposed to do. He thought that recently he'd been doing things pretty right, actually, but it wasn't like he'd never been proved wrong before. The day's dredging up of things that he had been happy to enough to hope were gone didn't help to bolster his confidence any. It brought back all sorts of memories, of things they'd overcome together and things they hadn't, and, as such subject matter always did, it made him feel the edge of that anger that had stayed with him for far too long after the war had ended.

But that wasn't what he was going to think about now - that wasn't the point of getting away. He shoved it firmly out of his mind as he rapped on her door. He was going to have a few days to think about her, and not about whatever else anyone thought he should be concerned with. If he was doing something wrong, he would figure it out. He had so far. But for the moment, going away with her seemed undeniably right.

Hermione's day had not been exciting in the least - though from the reactions of shock from those in her department her leaving at noon apparently heralded the end of the world. Nevertheless, she'd left at lunch and spent the afternoon shopping. Picking up even a few things that made her blush when she thought about why she wanted them, but they were now neatly tucked away in the bottom of her suitcase and she didn't have to think about them at least until later that night.

She was, surprisingly, relieved at the idea of a long weekend. She and Ron had had their ups and downs, but the last year or so seemed so settled. She thought it might be good for them to get away and remember what each other was like, away from work and London and their day to day lives.

She was ready when he arrived at the flat, answering the door with a smile - her hair piled back into a mess of a wild bun, wearing comfortable jeans and a sweater in light blue that she was fairly sure his mum had knitted for her last Christmas.

"Finally away from work, then?" She thought she could tease a bit. It was the only time in memory that she'd left the Ministry before he had.

"Yeah, yeah. What is it, five thirty? When's the last time you left before seven?" He leaned in to kiss her, glancing with approval down to her sweater. He didn't know why he found it encouraging that he wasn't the only one who didn't avoid wearing his mother's sweaters, but there it was. He touched her hair, pushing his hand into his jacket pocket to pull out his shrunken bag. "And I'm all packed. Are you ready to go? I think we should get out of town before anyone decides I've forgotten to dot some i's."

"Haven't I told you about always dotting i's?" Hermione smiled, leaning against him a little longer than she strictly needed when he kissed her hello, and then she stepped back and turned to her bag, which she hadn't shrunk down yet. She did that quickly enough, picking it up and putting it into her pocket as well.

"What type of place is it? A hotel? Lodge?" He hadn't exactly given her many details, but the mystery of it was nice, too.

"And crossing T's," he said, dragging his words out with mock weariness. "It's a bed and breakfast - Muggle place, but it should be private enough, I think." He'd found it in an actual paper brochure, and had even called - on the telephone, no less - to arrange their stay. He expected her to be very impressed. And the breakfast had looked fantastic, of course, which had played a large part in his decision. "Would you rather get dinner here, or find somewhere near there?" He fancied a more relaxing walk than anything in this part of London could give him, really. His day had been ridiculous.

"There," Hermione said without hesitating, sparing a few minutes looking around and going through her mental checklist to make sure she hadn't left anything she'd need or done something mundane like leaving the gas on. Then she smiled at him, for the moment not really worried about anything except a full weekend relaxing - they might not even argue! she could hope, even if she rather enjoyed those arguments.

"I'm a bit anxious to get away, actually. Aren't you?"

"Anxious doesn't even start to cover it. You wouldn't believe the day I've had. It's like they knew I was trying to leave town." He didn't know whether he would tell her about Carrow, at least not tonight. It wasn't that he thought she would insist on doing something (although he wasn't sure she wouldn't) - he didn't want to upset her, though. And it had put him out of sorts for hours.

"Let's go, then. There's a pub not too far off that's on the Floo network, and we can walk." He kissed her cheek, relieved to be on the way and all too ready to feel the weight of work lifting off him.

Hermione leaned in to kiss his cheek too, and then changed her mind and moved enough that her mouth caught his - she had to nearly stand on her toes to manage it, the giant, but still. When she pulled back from the quick kiss, she was smiling. "We'll have to go to Diagon for the floo," which of course he knew already. But she took his hand to leave the flat, and she was glad for the chance just to walk about with him for a while.

"But someone might see me," he complained, sticking his head out her door to check the hallway before taking her out. He knew. He didn't mind. He let her have his hand, keeping her close as they left her flat and the building and went out into the street. It seemed almost unreal that they'd really have four days. "If you hear anyone call Weasley, just start running."

"Sorry," She said with a chuckle. "I'm not moving into a new flat that has a floo just so that you can avoid people asking you to improve your work performance." She squeezed Ron's hand, falling into step beside him. "Is it something to do with the new case, that you're worried about? The first actual real assignment they give you, and you run off for a long weekend... I'd be hunting you down too."

"Oh, 'improve my performance,' sure." He rolled his eyes, a dry smile pulling at his mouth. "Because they'd be hunting me down to complain, not to beg me not to go ..." He slowed his pace a little so she wouldn't have to walk too fast. They were in plenty of time to check in. "That was most of the day, yeah. It is different when you actually have to think about work after you go home." Which she had known a lot longer than he had. He liked it, he thought, or would have if it hadn't been so close to home. "But it'll wait a while. I don't think anyone knows much, at this point."

And yet, he felt comfortable enough leaving, wasn't too worried that he wasn't acting urgently enough ... which meant he probably didn't think it had ended well.

Hermione had already thought of that. If they thought the case was apt to be solved with the Elkins girl found hiding away somewhere, they wouldn't let the team take holidays. When they thought there was a body waiting to be found, she didn't think they were in as much of a hurry. Then again, he was working with a team on this. They couldn't all be taking holiday at the same time.

"Your day didn't go well?" She asked, at least picking up on a bit of his tone when he talked about it. Still, there was a part of her that was reluctant to ask. Couldn't they have just one weekend where everything was good?

They were going to have a weekend where everything was good, and nothing was going to creep up from five years ago and ruin it. Not until at least the second day. "It was a day at the office," he said, trying to dismiss it with a smile that wasn't entirely genuine. But it would serve. He wanted to change the subject. "I was too busy worrying about whether they'd keep me late to have good day. I just wanted to get home. You can't blame me this time, you know. You took off at lunch."

"I know," Hermione laughed, rolling her eyes as they headed out from her building and into the street. "And to hear it, everyone else in my office must have thought the world was ending. It isn't as if I live there." Except, of course, that most of then likely thought she did - she was the first person there most mornings, the last person to leave.

"Isn't it? How many meals a day do you eat there?" He was mostly teasing, but he was pretty sure the answer was usually 'at least two.' "They'll get on without you. And if they don't, you can let them know just who they need to sack. You can't be carrying the whole damned department."

Well, she could, but she shouldn't. "Four days isn't an eternity." It seemed way too short to him, right now.

"Two," Hermione said, without catching the he was teasing, then she turned a narrowed eyed look on him for a second before she laughed it off. "I might be. It certainly wouldn't be the first time I've carried everyone. Besides, I deserve the time."

Ron rolled his eyes. "Try having breakfast at home for once? It makes reading the paper more relaxing." Not that that's what he did with his mornings, but he had never been reluctant to preach. "I know you can carry everyone. I meant to say you shouldn't." It didn't sound like she was arguing, thankfully. She deserved rather more than four days.

"Because that's what you do?" Hermione looked dubious, then smiled at him again and leaned in impulsively to kiss his cheek. "Let's just not talk about work again for the next few days, either of us."

"Sometimes I get around to the sports page," he said, which was about all he could say that wasn't a bald-faced lie. He grinned. He hadn't expected her to be the one to insist they stop grousing about work, but the fact that it was happening before they'd even left London gave him an awful lot of hope. "You've got yourself a deal." A sudden change of subject was what was called for, then, which was fine with him. "You know, if you get tired of lying around the hotel or hiking and such, they've got all kinds of wildlife in - oh. That reminds me. I'll have to change money." But they could stop at the Leaky for a few minutes and do that.
