Ron's day was not going exactly according to plan - which had been to come to work, fly under the radar until four fifty-nine and then skate out before anyone could give him a reason not to. He'd spent most of the morning being all too visible, giving a report about the fugitive he'd run into in Knockturn before work; then he'd knocked a cup of tea across his desk as he was eating his lunch in a rush and trying to catch up; and now he was off to get up to speed on the first real case he'd been assigned since he had started here.
He had been openly, vocally looking forward to getting some truly substantive work, but somehow he hadn't imagined this. He hadn't known Elkins personally, but here was one more person who had given of herself to end the war, one more person who had paid for it with ... Well, he was getting ahead of himself, there. There was no solid reason to think, yet, that the incident had had anything to do with her politics, and no proof that she had suffered anything more than a nervous breakdown.
But as he shouldered his way into the room where he was set to meet the rest of the team, he knew that that sort of caution was all rubbish. The war hadn't left him with an awful lot of objectivity when it came to explaining away missing do-gooders. Hopefully his co-workers would be of the same mind, or he could foresee a very long and unproductive conversation ahead of him.
