It seemed it was only a matter of time until they got back on that topic. Fleetingly, he tensed. But Nikolas was beginning to grow tired again, the way he had been when he first arrived home not long ago. It had been all fine and good to have a bout of teasing banter with his wife, but when the subject returned to the one he was trying not to think about before going to sleep, he supposed his mind was resisting by reminding him of just how exhausted he felt. And being so close to Daphne had made the space around them wonderfully warm. With a long sigh, he closed his eyes and frowned. There was no reason to deny Daphne's statement - they both already knew it was true.
"Yeah," he admitted. His voice sounded suddenly weary, but he opened his eyes and fixed them vaguely on Daphne's shoulder. "Yeah, I am. It's more than I would've expected." His brow creased again. "We were...she was my friend. Even if I haven't seen her for years."
