WHO: Verity Weasely and Trevor Scaboir
WHAT: Verity's pissed and runs into Trevor
WHERE: Diagon/Knockturn
WHEN: Monday night
WARNING/RATING/STATUS: None/PG13/Ongoing

Verity was pissed. It didn't quite matter to her that Fred was right and Ron was a prat, and it definitely didn't matter that the logical part of her brain was telling her to cool it. Although she loved Charlie with all her heart, more than she'd ever thought she could love someone, she did wish things had gone differently, that she'd been planned for, things hadn't been so rushed and chaotic. But to have someone like Ron throw that in her face? And was that what all of Fred's family thought of her, too?

She hadn't been able to handle even looking at the journal anymore, had just dropped Charlie at the shop, ignored Fred's attempt to talk to her and had headed out into the dark Alley, just needing to walk. At the juncture, she paused, not quite wanting to walk up to the new bits of the area.

Trevor! The thought came and she almost snapped her fingers. He was always good for a distraction! And he'd said he worked down Knockturn! Taking a breath, she stepped down the foreboding Alley, trying to walk casually and not draw any attention to herself. Although it was later, there were people prowling the street, eyeing her uncomfortably. It wasn't until she was halfway down the Alley, her anger fading quickly and being replaced by a deep seated feeling of unease and the first cold shivers of fear, that she remembered she had no idea where Trevor worked.

Stepping outside, Trevor kept out of the way of the meagre foot traffic and rested in the shadow of the shop's entrance. Inside he'd left two of his newer crew members, stuck with the boring shop duty all the rookies got, arguing over the Falcons game. He liked Quidditch as much as the next man but he had been moments away from knocking their heads together and hexing them into silence. And while it was an entertaining idea he didn't feel like dealing with the whiny aftermath.

Intending to move on toward the Troll's Head, Trevor pulled a cigarette from behind his ear and lit up. The weather was fairly decent, it wasn't raining and not too cold yet, it was the most he could ask for after coming back from Fiji. It was certainly better than the cold he knew was only around the corner. Trevor turned and glanced into the alley as he inhaled and did a double take when he recognised the head of blond hair meandering past. "Oi," he called out, stepping off the stoop toward Verity. "Are you fuckin' mad?"

At the shout, Verity started and whirled, hand grasping for her wand before she recognised her cousin. "Trevor," she gasped, making her way towards him quickly and gripping his arm, weak with relief. She'd been stupid to come down here, without knowing where she was going, fuelled by anger and the reckless idiocy that came with it.

"Trevor," she said again, and grinned up at him in thanks, as though he'd actually swooped in and saved her from something, rather than just shouting at her.

"Yeah," he said, puffing on the cigarette as he resisted the urge to jerk his arm back. "You know my name. Bloody brilliant for you." He took another puff and looked around at the variety of milling bystanders, all giving his cousin looks that could most likely be labelled unsavoury. "What the 'ell are you doing down 'ere?" He looked her over and rolled her eyes, not only was her clueless expression as good as walking around with a sign on her neck that said 'Hex Me! I'm An Easy Mark!' but now she was an even harder target to miss.

"I was looking for you!" She responded, taking a step closer to him, feeling safer than she had a moment ago, but well aware that Trevor put himself above her, safety wise. She leaned back slightly and looked up at the building they were standing in front of, feeling immediately uncomfortable as she turned her back on the others walking by, the heat of their stares burning into her. "Is this where you work?"

"Yeah. Sure," he shrugged, happily ignoring the passing strangers now that Verity was out of harm's way. Technically what he did in there was work, even if he was sure that wasn't the same way Verity was thinking. He looked back at the dark building and briefly considered taking her inside before he realised what a colossally bad idea that was. "C'mon," he jerked his head down the narrow street and tugged her arm. "I'm off to the pub. Unless you wanted to go on and find your own way back 'ome." He didn't know what it was that brought her round for him but he knew her well enough to know that now she'd found him he wouldn't be escaping easily. He could at least get a pint in him for the process.

"The pub? But I'm - " She cut herself off at his almost threat and trotted after him obediently. "No, no, I'll come with you," she followed him up the street, sticking as close to him as she dared to, a part of her cursing her stupidity at deciding to venture down the Alley.

"What're you doing at work so late?" she asked, trailing him into the dim, smoky pub and resisting the urge to cough.

"I'm always working," he said, his sort of non-answer as he easily moved through the rough crowd of the Troll's Head. "I just like night better. The days for sleepin' innit?" It was easier for him to weave his lanky form through the crowd of night time drinkers than it was for pregnant Verity and he found Gretchen at their booth while she was still a few people away. "Got a tail," he muttered, jerking his head back in his cousin's direction before he sat down and waited for Verity to slide in next.

Sticking as close as possible, Verity wasn't able to move through the crowd as easily as her cousin was and she almost lost sight of him for one heart stopping moment, then the patrons parted and she darted forwards, slipping into the booth beside Trevor.

"I - " she started, then did a double take as she recognised the person across from them. She looked back and forth between her cousin and his friend for a moment, frowning. "You... this isn't a date, is it?" she jerked her thumb back in the direction she hoped Diagon was in. "I can go?"

Gretchen reacted instinctively to Trevor's words, hearing them before the tone, stiffening imperceptibly. When she caught sight of his blonde cousin, pregnant again, she relaxed, rolling her eyes and throwing her arm across the back of the seat.

"A date?" Gretchen actually laughed out loud at Verity's question, her glass halfway to her mouth. "You don't think he actually takes me on dates, do you?" The image of Trevor offering her flowers and taking her out for dinner flitted through her mind and she set her glass down on the table to laugh for a long moment.

Trevor rolled his eyes at both the women. A surly looking bartender walked past their table and set down Trevor's whiskey, sparing a look in Verity's direction before he kept on walking. "I don't think I've ever taken a bird on a date," he remarked, knocking back the alcohol, suddenly realising how this might not have been the wisest option.

Opening her mouth to ask for a water, the bartender didn't pause long enough for her to order and she settled back in the booth, knitting her fingers together and feeling very small and unimportant. "Never?" she asked, surprised. "Haven't you two been dating for like, six years? You've never taken her on a date?"

"We're not dating," Trevor insisted, taking another drink and answering before Gretchen could. Or laugh, or whatever it was she had to respond to that with.

"You're not?" Verity looked between the two a few times, ignoring Gretchen's giggles. "Weren't you living together before?" She stopped herself, leaning back against the booth and staring at her cousin. "You're not married, are you?"

"No! No, I'm not fuckin' married!" Trevor spluttered, coughing for a moment on a mouthful of liquor. He was many things but the type to marry was not one of them. "Merlin, Ver! Fuckin' married," he shook his head, ignored Gretchen, and waved over the bartender.

Crossing her arms over her chest, Verity shrugged. "I don't know, do I? I didn't even know you were alive til a few months ago!" She hesitated, then plunged on. "And if you're not married and you're not dating, what are you?" She wasn't sure why she was so interested in her cousin's love life, but she'd just thrown a fit at Ron for having the same relationship for six years, a part of her felt Trevor deserved the same questioning.

"We work together," he said gruffly, he could just imagine Gretchen's thoughts at all this. "The fuck does it matter to you?" He knocked back the last of his whiskey and pushed the glass forcefully, sending it across the table for whenever the lazy bartender came round. "And we fuck. We work and we fuck, s'what you wanted to 'ear?"

Grinning, Gretchen fluttered her eyelashes across the table at Trevor. "C'mon, darling," she wheedled, barely able to keep a straight face. "You know you love me, you don't have to hide it from your family."

"Oh, fuck you," Trevor waved off Gretchen, rolling his eyes at her. He had half a mind to just get up and go back to the office, leave them both to entertain and/or fend for themselves. Luckily for them the bartender set down another glass of whiskey, Trev could manage to put up with them for another few minutes.

Frowning at Trevor's response, Verity managed to catch the bartender before he disappeared again, ordering a water in what she hoped was a gruff voice. Then, before she even realised the question was coming, the words were out of her mouth and she was cringing in anticipation of his response. "Trevor, do you think I'm a slag?"

"Far as I know," he said, after a moment of surprised silence, "You 'aven't slept with anyone but...your Weasel...in what? I don't know, a lot of fucking years. That's not like any slag I know, is it?" Smirking Trevor turned toward Gretchen and raised an eyebrow. "You're an expert, that's how it works innit?"

Ignoring Verity's gasp, it took Gretch a moment to respond, schooling her expression and tapping her chin, thoughtfully. "In my expert opinion, sleeping with one person for... 'a lot of fucking years' doesn't make you a slag."

Gretchen took a long sip of her drink and turned to Trev, smiling sweetly. "Side note: your right hand is going to get quite a lot of use in the next few days."

Trevor rolled his eyes and waved off Gretchen's threat before turning back to his drink. He knew her too well to be worried about that. And his hand got plenty of use anyway. "You know you're not a slag," he said to Verity, taking a drink and going down the path he really didn't want to. "Why even ask that?"

"Because," she responded, looking up in surprise as her water was delivered. "You wouldn't lie to me?" She stopped and shook her head, trying to explain. She'd always been able to count on Trevor to give his honest opinion on things; mostly because he seemed not to care enough to spare her feelings. "Fred's not going to tell me his whole family thinks I'm a slag because I got knocked up out of wedlock and before I turned twenty."

Now that she was explaining things, her earlier outburst seemed more than a bit ridiculous. Sure, Ron was a prat, but he had been no more of a prat tonight than he usually was. Certainly not enough to warrant the reaction he'd gotten from her.

Shrugging again, Trevor took another drink. "Don't think they would," he mused, trying to think about things like a bunch of ridiculous blood traitors might. "Stuff like that happens. You married 'im, 'ave only 'ad the one kid. Salazar, Ver....you need to fucking calm down."

Fred had been putting the last touches on something in the backroom - and had left Charlie colouring in the front, though as he came out to check on her she'd fallen asleep. He was just about to lock up and collect her to apparate home when he caught sight of the goodbye.

Weasley rage was an interesting thing. Fred could feel himself turning red, his temper flaring, and he'd have yelled something - or maybe crashed through the door to punch the Death Eater in his sodding face - if his daughter hadn't been sleeping soundly in front of his counter a few feet away.

As it was, he turned the lights off and turned away from the window, teeth clenched, and thought about what he'd do.
