Entry tags:!1997: 09, !incomplete, !open, ernie macmillan, susan bones

Who: Ernie Macmillan and Susan Bones and OPEN(-ish)
When: Friday Evening, 7:30-ish
Where: Hufflepuff Common Room
What: Ernie is stressed and needs to spend time talking to his friends. So they do.
Rating: G, maybe up to PG-13 if there is greater annoyance?
Open/Closed: OPEN to Hufflepuffs

Ernie flipped through his Muggle Studies textbook for ten minutes, before shutting it decisively. He then opened his Defence Against the Dark Arts textbook, and read two pages, before pulling out a piece of parchment, putting a title on it, and then leaving the quill hovering over the page as he gazed blankly at the words that he was supposed to be processing. There was so much homework to do, but he couldn't focus at all.

It wasn't really a surprise, if he thought about it. All the events of the summer were enough to be a distraction, and he hadn't been there for any of them. Then there were all his Head Boy duties, which involved placating the Slytherins, which was enough to exhaust anyone, quite besides trying to reassure Padma that she was best for he job, when he was starting to think he certainly wasn't. And business back at home was far slower than any of them could remember having ever happened before. And now they were preparing for the next DA meeting. It was a heavy load, and even though he'd talked to Padma about some of it - mostly the Head duties - it wasn't the same.

Ernie exhaled loudly, closed his books, and waited for one, or hopefully more, of his friends to pick up the 'we need to talk' aura emanating from that corner of the room. He didn't even really care if it wasn't one of his good friends who picked it up, because he felt fully distressed, and anyone would be a good distraction.

The entire school has been feeling a little off lately, between juggling school work, and doing extra credit work for Professor Sprout, Susan hardly had time to sit down. This was typical of the Hufflepuff, she was never the best student, but what she put her heart into she was able to excel in. Typically stuck in the library attempting to complete her Potions homework, or out in the gardens tending to the plants, it seemed Susan became a bit of a recluse. However, despite her busy schedule, there was one thing she always had time for; Her friends. There was nothing that meant more to her than being there for her friends, and while her close circle of friends might have been small; the most she could do was be for them whenever they needed her.

Finishing with the Chinese Chomping Cabbages a little early, Professor Sprout gave Susan praise for her work before sending the girl back to castle to clean up. The chance to have extra credit with Professor Sprout meant millions to Susan. Plants were one subject she knew so much about, she could understand them more than she could waving a wand around. Feeling slightly defeated that Professor Sprout didn't offer her any extra work, Susan headed back to the school.

Auburn red curls were pulled back from her pale green eyes with a dark red ribbon and her Herbology robes were covered in dirt. A few streaks of dirt marred typically flawless ivory skin on her face as she paid little attention to the dirt she might be trailing with her. Realizing she was thoroughly exhausted - perhaps it was a good thing she finished the cabbages early? Susan was looking forward to a nice warm bath, and a clean change of clothes. However, stepping into the common room, that future quickly diminished as she witnessed Ernie do one of his 'we need to talk' types of sighs. Frowning slightly, Susan tilted her head slightly, as she moved to the corner of the room where he sat.

"Everything all right, Ernie?" Voice was soft and gentle, carefully trying to figure out what could possibly be wrong. A natural instinct to make him feel better kicked in, as her look of concern tried to appear consoling, and comforting. Typical Susan Bones, without fail the girl was always able to push away her wants and needs to aid those of her friends.

When Ernie saw Susan cross the room towards him, he felt a momentary flash of guilt. She had obviously just been down at the greenhouses, based on the dirt present on the girl's robes and face, and she looked tired. But he knew that he would have done the same for any of his friends, so he smiled gratefully at her.

"It's not that anything is wrong, it's just that there is too much of everything," he replied to her question. Somehow, talking to Susan for even this one moment made it feel so much less. "Between NEWTs and being Head, and everything else, it's just a lot."

Taking a seat opposite him, she practically collapsed into the chair. She didn't realize how much her feet hurt until she was off of them. A tiny smile curled on her lips, as she placed her dirty gloves on the seat beside her and shrugged off her dirty robes. "Well, too much of everything can lead to situations being bad. It's like eating sweets, too much of them leads to becoming ill."

Head tilted just slightly as the girl finally managed to toss her Herbology robes to the floor to be picked up before she left. "If it helps any, Ernie, I think Professor McGonagall made the right decision in making you Head boy. I can't think of another person more perfect for the job." Her words were sincere and honest, that was one thing Susan was good at; being sincere in her words. "I'm sure you'll find a balance of it all, you are smart and can handle any sort of obstacle that gets in your way." Hand lifted to brush red curls off her forehead, which ultimately smeared some dirt across her forehead. Who ever said Herbology was a clean job?

Ernie smiled bitterly, not at Susan, but at the situation he was in. "You're right, of course. But this year it's twice that bad. It's too much of each thing, and there are too many things."

"And thanks Susan. Really. It's just way too easy to doubt myself about this," he said, gesturing at his Head Boy pin. "It's just that, with the glue incident, I didn't want to be so much as civil to the Slytherins, even though I knew I needed to. And all of that, and everything else, makes it hard to focus on this," indicating the stack of books, parchmet, ink, and quills littering the table. He sighed. "I know I should be thankful for the chance, but all I can think of is how silly I was to ever want it."

Ernie watched as Susan smeared dirt onto her face, and he smiled. "How were the greenhouses?"
