Unexpected bravado wasn't Evie's style, and promising kisses certainly wasn't her style. She couldn't for the life of her figure out why she had promised Alfie Cattermole not only a date, but a kiss at the end of said date. She wasn't sure she wanted it, she probably wasn't ready for the reality of kissing a boy - heck, she'd only just semi got her head around the idea of going out with one! - and she was beginning to wish she had never opened her big mouth.

The last thing she wanted to do was hurt Alfie, or make him feel at all like he was being used for experimentation purposes, because however much it may have looked that way, that was honestly not Evie's intention. She genuinely liked Alfie, she just wasn't sure if she liked him that way. She figured she owed it to herself, and to him as well, to at least give him the benefit of the doubt, right?

Right?

In any case, it was done, and unless she wanted to look like the world's biggest bitch, she was going to have to go through with it. She sat in her bed and shook her head, angry at herself. No, she wasn't "going to have to go through with it". This wasn't some kind of medieval torture, this was a nice friendly dinner with a guy she was friends with, and with one simple little kiss at the end.

Only problem was, she'd never kissed anyone before, and didn't have the slightest clue how to go about it. She couldn't just ask anyone for advice - most people would laugh at her, so inexperienced, and at her age, too! No, there was only one person who would do in a pinch like this. Audrey.

Sitting cross-legged on her bed, Audrey frowned at her textbook. She understood the concept behind non-verbal spells but was having serious trouble with the execution. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't make them work. She heaved a sigh and tucked her hair back behind her ears. Maybe she just wasn't concentrating hard enough.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, trying to centre herself and clear her mind. Eyes still squeezed shut she raised her wand and pictured the piece of paper sitting on her bed. Wingardium leviosa! She thought, as hard as she could, moving her wand and opening her eyes.

The paper had moved! Audrey let out a happy gasp, then realised the curtains surrounding her bed were now open. It hadn't been her magic, but air currents caused her best friend, who had moved the paper.

"Hey, Evie," she murmured, dejectedly, putting her books and papers together to make room for the other girl to slide onto the bed.

Evie plopped down next to Audrey, then flopped backwards, lying there and staring up at the canopy over Audrey's bed. for a long moment, she didn't speak, still wrapped up in her own thoughts, but eventually she rolled onto her side to face her friend.

"Hey," she said. She knew the look on her face would tip Audrey off right away that there was something wrong, but there wasn't a lot she could do about that.

"I'm a dolt," she sighed mournfully, waiting for her friend to ask her to elaborate.

Audrey waited for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah," she agreed, shrugging and biting her lip to hide her smile. "You are." Evie didn't smile back and Audrey lifted her books, setting them on her bedside table. Still there was no response from her friend, and Aud stretched out beside the other girl. "Why now?" She asked, nudging her friend gently.

Taking a deep breath, Evie exhaled before answering. "I sort of promised Alfie a kiss," she admitted, cheeks coloring pink as she said it. "But now I'm freaking out, because I don't know how to, and he might think I suck at it, and I might think he sucks at it, and this all WAY too much pressure for me, and I have no one to blame but myself because I brought it upon myself!"

She was panting slightly as she reached the end of this speech, and she rolled back onto her back, covering her face with her hands. "What am I going to do?" she wailed. "I can't kiss him! But I have to kiss him! But I do want to kiss him, he's sweet! But I don't know HOW! This should NOT be this hard!"

It took Audrey a long moment to wrestle some kind of logic out of Evie's rant. Even when she understood the words her friend had said, she still didn't quite understand what had happened. "What?" She furrowed her brows and stared across the small expanse between them. "You did what? Why?"

Also creeping underneath her confusion was a little voice wondering why Alfie hadn't mentioned this to her, but she pushed that aside for now. "You don't have to kiss him," she pointed out, slowly, twirling a strand of her hair around her finger.

"He said he was trying out for the house team," Evie said, hands still covering her face. "So I was all, wow, that's brilliant, that makes me all shivery! Because it sort of did - the idea of going with a Quidditch player is pretty interesting. But then I said I'd kiss him, and he was all, brilliant, so I've got another reason to make the team..."

She trailed off, realising now what a gigantic idiot she'd been. "I know I don't HAVE to kiss him," she mumbled. "But I don't want to hurt his feelings. What if he's really looking forward to it, or something?"

The idea of Alfie, little Alfie Cattermole who had sat with her during their Sorting and had grown into such a good friend, looking forward to KISSING her, was... different, to say the least.

Shivery? Hard as she tried, Audrey couldn't quite understand that feeling. No one had ever made her feel shivery. She'd read about the feeling, and heard others talking about it, but she'd never felt it. The closest she'd gotten to butterflies in her stomach was nerves crushing in before a Potions exam.

"That's stupid," Audrey said at last, then hastened to explain. "You don't do things you don't want to just because someone else is really looking forward to it. What if he was really looking forward to," she glanced around, even though they were alone and her curtains were drawn, and dropped her voice. "sex? Would you just... you know? Just to keep from hurting his feelings?"

Sex? Oh, good grief. "No, of course not!" she spluttered. There was no way she was ready for that. "But this is just a kiss... right?"

It wasn't. It wasn't just a kiss, it would be her first kiss, and she was nervous, yes, and frankly a little excited. "I want to kiss him, Audrey," she whispered. It was true, to a point. She did want to kiss him - for the kiss itself. And she felt terrible even admitting it to herself, so she chose not to say it out loud.

"I just don't know how," she repeated. "Do you have any idea?" This last was said with a hopeful note in her voice. If Audrey had any handy hints, that would make life that much easier.

"Well, I'm not saying right this second, it's just the nub," Audrey responded, trying hard not to snap. Her stomach was clenching painfully as she listened to the other girl talk about Alfie. It wasn't quite jealousy, because she clearly didn't want to kiss him. But Evie was having these feelings, and Audrey still wasn't. She'd always thought, hoped, that maybe they were just late bloomers. That it was alright she'd never kissed a boy, or even really liked a boy, because it was the same for Evie. But now...?

At Evie's question, Audrey snorted, unable to help herself. "I most certainly do not," she answered, then shook her head. "It looks simple. You just press your lips against his and try not to drool, I reckon? If Slytherins can do it, it should be no problem for us."

"Well say what you mean and mean what you say," Evie giggled, tired of the dreary mood and attempting to lighten it. She reached out to tickle her friend, unaware of any storms brewing behind the other girl's eyes.

"In theory it looks and sounds easy," she mused. "But surely there's got to me more to it than that?"
