Characters: Nessie MacFusty and Open
Settings: Wednesday Evening, The Leaky Cauldron
Summary: Nessie attempts to go shopping and loses her money instead. And possibly offends random strangers with the ensuing swearing.
Rating/Disclaimer: TBD

Her routine was one thing Nessie rarely changed. Going through every motion each day successfully was trying enough, doing things on the fly most likely meant that something down the line would be forgotten or neglected. By her normal timetable she should have been cleaning up after her hatchlings' dinners instead she was gathering her things and heading through the pubs archway into Diagon Alley. That morning she'd had to accept the fact that once the majority of your clothes were singed or burned in some way there was no choice but to finally buy new ones.

Halfway down the Alley she stopped suddenly, sliding her hand in her pocket and wincing. A hole where her money bag should have been, of course. Stopping in the middle of the crowd with only a soft curse, Nessie changed direction and jogged back to the pub, scanning the ground for anything glittery as she went. After only a couple minor collisions and hasty apologies, Nessie hurried back into the Leaky Cauldron and glanced around for whichever table looked like the one she'd taken her drink at. Oblivious to the patron sitting at the table, she got down on her knees and crawled halfway under it, muttering a string of colourful curses. At least maybe this time she'd remember to take as little gold as possible when she went out.

Over all things were looking up. Even though the owners were still looking to get rid of her, the team was behind her, and for that she was very thankful. Practice for the upcoming match this weekend had gone well, and she was about ready to start thinking that they were ready for this match. So, to reward herself for all of the time and effort she'd put in she decided that it was about time to go out and be social, instead of just going home and crawling into bed with a good book.

First things first, she needed food and some sort of drink. She stopped by the Leaky and while it was sort of packed she didn't really see anyone she knew. So she ate in peace for the moment. Just as she was about to finish up her butter beer and the paper she was reading she heard someone rush by her and then noticed someone crawl under it. She sat there and with a puzzled expression on her face she put down the paper and leaned downward her face looking at the young woman half way under her table.

"How's it going down there?" she asked with a kind smile looking around under the dark table to see what the other woman might possibly be looking for. "Nessie?" she asked when she finally got a look at her face to see the sister of one of her really good friends.

Feeling around the floor, Nessie felt the hope she was clinging to slip away. "It's alr-Ow!" She turned toward the voice and lifted her head, forgetting for a moment that there was a table top just above her and banged it against the underside. She shifted so she could sit and look up at the other woman, smiling brightly when she recognised her. "Brigid! What are you doing up there?"

Brigid flinched a little when she watched Nessie's head go against the table and made a little sucking noise in between her teeth. "Just enjoying a butter beer, what are you doing down there?" she asked thinking that if there was room under there she just might have gone underneath and joined her. Why not right? But alas, there was not enough room so she just leaned over a little bit more. "The head okay?" she asked pointing to the underside of the table making sure that Nessie's head was alright after banging it.

"There was a hole in my pocket," she explained, realising after a moment that it seemed silly to still be on the floor when she'd already determined there was no gold to be found. She scooted out from under the table and popped to her feet and took the empty seat across from the other woman. "It's alright, it's had much worse before."

"Oh," Brigid said as if that made sense. Actually it did make quite a bit of sense, you lose something, go retrace your steps. "hope you didn't lose anything too important." she said with a small smile as she watched Nessie pop back up and sit back down. "I suppose that's a good thing." she decided. "What brings you here, besides a hole in your pocket?" she asked.

"Gold," Nessie shrugged, folding her arms over the tabletop and smiling as if she'd lost nothing but pocket lint. She'd long since learned that getting upset when she lost or forgot something would be a waste of time. And utterly depressing. "To Diagon Alley? Had some shopping to do. Couldn't put it off any longer. My clothes are starting to fall apart, dragons are tough on things." She paused, her mind finally realising the timeliness of the hole in her pocket and chuckled. "The pub I just came to for a drink. Always makes shopping easier. At least this dull sort of shopping."

"And I take it you were sitting here before you lost it. Oh dear," she said automatically looking down. "I didn't spy any when I sat down, maybe someone was nice enough to turn it in up at the bar." Brigid shrugged hopefully. "I can see where dragons might shorten the life expectancy of a garment." That seemed logical enough to Brigid. She had no experience with them, expect what she learned about in Care of Magical Creatures, and that was from a book, but it was easy enough to imagine she supposed.

"That it does." she agreed. "I feel the same way about shopping for stuff for me home." she started to absentmindedly play with the bottle before her, it was empty but she was slowly spinning it between her two hands.

"Aye," Nessie nodded, watching Brigid look down but didn't bother to follow suit; if she hadn't found anything when she dove under there she was ready to accept it was long gone. "If it's not the claws, it's the fire. Little things don't have the best control at their age." It would make sense to some to not handle newly hatched dragons like they were puppies or puffskeins but those it made sense to obviously weren't a MacFusty. She watched the bottle for a moment before nodding at the other woman. "Another round?"

Brigid tried to get a visual in her head of what the little things might look like. But other than what she was sure was the wrong definition of "little" she gave up. "I don't suppose they would. How old are they now again?" she asked clearly not remembering. "Have I ever mentioned how brave you are for taking care of them?" she happily added, pretty sure she'd mentioned it.

Brigid looked down at her hands, realizing what she was doing and stopped. "Sure, my treat." she said as she flagged down the waiter. "What'd you like?" she asked Nessie.

"Brave?" Nessie's brow furrowed slightly and she shook her head. She'd never thought of what she did as brave, it was simply what she'd grown up with and knew. Dragons weren't scary to her, just what she was raised to do. "They vary," she explained, "But all under two years. After that they are too old for the nursery...and too big." Though she'd love to keep caring for her dragons after that point, by then there were generally new hatchlings that needed caring for.

Nessie's eye followed Brigid's to the bottle and then watched her flag down the waiter before her smile faltered. She'd already forgotten she didn't have any more gold on her. "A stout, please. Cheers, Brig," she answered, smiling sheepishly.

Brigid nodded. "Very brave. I'd honestly rather take me chances with a blugder." she said cheerfully. That she could deal with easy enough, but somehow the idea of being charred or squashed seemed to freak her out a little bit. "But also, it's kind of neat." she did admit. Wasn't everyday that she knew someone who was around the beasts everyday. "Alright then, so, I take it that it's going well then?" she asked.

Brigid ordered two happily. She was more than willing to treat her friend to a stout or two. She was happy for the company more than anything. The waiter hurried back and placed it in front of the women. "Cheers." she repeated before drinking out of her glass.

"None have managed to kill each other yet," Nessie chirruped earnestly. She hadn't ever had one of her hatchlings actually kill another but they were an aggressive breed and, she felt, prone to being tetchy. She'd broken up many a fight but they usually only resulted in a few scars and minor healing. For everyone.

She clinked her glass against the other woman's and knocked a gulp before she returned to conversation. She recalled Brigid's recent journal entry and waved a hand as she tried to get her brain to fill in all the facts. "What about you. With the team? What's happening?"

"That's a good sign." she replied setting her glass down. "How's that one doing, uh, Torch?" she said trying to remember what she had read a few weeks back.

Brigid shrugged. "I have no idea." she said shaking her head. She hated not being in control of something like this. But what bugged her the most was how this all came about. It had been one thing if they had been up front with her..."There's a lot of rumours about Montrose and Portree floatin' around, but I haven't been told to clean out me locker, so I guess I'm alright for now." she said hopefully.
