Since Jack's dramatic departure and the entire scene at the cafe Andrew had been left feeling a little hollow. He'd apologised to Frank (who had shushed him with petting and reassurances) and had tried to act like he'd put it out of his mind, but the strangeness of Jack's behaviour dogged him for the rest of the week, the whole of his date.
When they went out Frank was charming and a little cheesy but sweet with it and completely, utterly enraptured with Andrew, who was more than a little baffled by all the attention but still only half there. The more he thought the 'incident' over, the more he was certain that there was something wrong with Jack. Through happenstance or design the pair hadn't really spoken about it, barely spoken at all in fact, and the absence was sorely felt; missing Jack was like missing a limb and he was feeling guilty now about how hurt he'd been feeling when clearly whatever was up with Jack was no small thing.
Frank noticed his distraction but was understanding about the whole thing which just made it worse - Andrew knew he didn't deserve Jack, even if the other boy had shown any interest in him, and now he was finding out that he didn't deserve Frank either.
"I'm sorry." he told the barista at the door, arms wrapped around his chest. "I've been a terrible date."
Frank smiled at him and took his hands gently. "You couldn't be if you tried." Frank assured him with that same abundance of almost worship that made Andrew so uncomfortable. He was hugged and expected a goodnight kiss at the door, but Frank just pressed one in against the side of his head in a way that was almost motherly and then pulled back to smile at him in a way that made Andrew feel guilty for not feeling the same way. "Next time we'll have a proper kiss." Frank promised, and Andrew blushed at his presumption and the fact that he'd be wanted again.
He nodded, turned mute by the way Frank treated him and waited until the other man had retreated back to the street before stepping indoors and closing the front door behind him.
Now he had to go apologise to Jack and find out what was wrong.
