Who: Zacharias Smith and Merlin Toke.
When: September 12th. Afternoon.
Where: Memorial Alley. Sugarush.
What: A random encounter.
Rating: PG for possible rude words.
Status: Closed/Complete.

After standing in line at Sugarush to get himself a strawberry scone and an Italian soda, Zacharias glanced around to find a seat. It was a lazy sort of Sunday afternoon (which was the best type of Sunday, second only to Sundays that involved Quidditch in some way shape or form) and he had decided that he wanted something sweet. Which was what had brought him to Sugarush.

It was suitably busy, but eventually he got and paid for his selections. With a cool glass in one hand, and a scone-bearing plate in the other, Zacharias glanced around to find a place to sit, since walking and eating was both unclassy and not always easy to do.

He found a table for two near the door, against a window, which as perfect for watching people go by (and silently mocking some of them in his head, as he was want to do).

The blonde former Hufflepuff slid into one of the seats (the one which would have his back to the wall, which he liked) and set down plate and glass. His capable fingers took hold of the straw, using it to swish his drink around before he took a sip, glancing up as the door to the shop opened.

Apart from the odd chocoball, Merlin wasn't really keen on sweets - he preferred blood flavoured lollipops to sugar, so the fact that he'd been irresitably drawn into Sugarush was a puzzle to him, that was until he entered and found himself looking directly at the blond that had scared him so. Fuck.

His attention was on Zach in the same way that his feet had followed a path to the shop that only they knew about, attracted like earth magnets, and now that he was there he wanted the feeling of repellance to push him back and away, allow him to flee as though this was just a meeting of chance; but this was no meeting of chance and he couldn't stop himself walking into the shop a little, standing there and staring back at Zach, struck dumb by his shock, by the way his gifts had betrayed him.

Zacharias was just as surprised to see Merlin Toke walk through the doors. Of all the people in the Wizarding world to come through the doors of Sugarush at that moment, it was him. That was... well, odd. A big coincidence.

He recovered first, and flashed a lazy, easy grin at the other. "Well if it isn't Merlin Toke," he said. He nudged the other chair with his foot, pushing it back from the table. "Sit, sit," he instructed, waving a hand at the chair as he did so.

"I think you owe me an explaination, at least," he added, because he had been trying to figure out what it was about him that freaked Merlin out as it did.

Once again, that smile made Merlin flinch but, just as before, he was compelled to walk across the room to warily take the seat that had been offered to him, sitting like a dog obeying a command.

He was tense as he sat there and the picture of them, Zach relaxed and laid back and Merlin tense and uncomfortable, was quite strange.

Again? Owed him again? What should have come out of his mouth next was 'owe you for what?', or better yet 'I don't owe you anything' but what actually happened was, "An explanation for what?"

Zacharias curled his fingers together in front of him, briefly, as Merlin slid into the seat. Once again looking as though he was being lead to his doom.

"That," he replied, and he gestured to Merlin, as if that said it all. It did, to him. "You're scared of me, and yet you haven't told me why. As I really haven't done anything to you - you were already acting this way before I snogged you - I think I deserve to at least know why I scare you do."

Merlin had his arms crossed tight over his chest again, watching Zach like a too-oft kicked dog watched feet. Even being called out on it didn't mean that he could change the way he was sitting.

He spoke haltingly, like it was hurting him to reveal this. "It's not... it's not what you've done to me." Not much anyway, he amended. "It's what you're going to do."

"What do you mean what I'm going to do?" Zacharias asked him a bit sourly. "What do you do, predict the fu-" Oh, right. Merlin was a Seer. So he did see the future. Some bit of the future anyway, depending on how good he was.

The former Hufflepuff scowled briefly, before the expression melted into a neutral one and he sat back in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. "And what do you think I'm going to do? Hex you? Hit you? Because while it's true that I'm not the nicest person in the world-" Zacharias was well aware of his reputation and the truth to it. To friends, people he cared about, he could be the nicest person in the world. But to others he was a prat, a snob, and many other things. "-However I'm not in the habit of hurting defenseless sorts." Which Merlin definitely was. "So I think you're Seeing wrong."

That Merlin meant something else entirely did not occur to him.

Merlin didn't say anything about Zach stating the obvious, looking down at the table top as the blond scowled - this was his person? This man who seemed to want to use him or hit him half the time?

He flinched at the mention of what Zach might do to him, aware that it could be possible and he wouldn't see it coming; it was rare that he Saw things about himself, which was part of the reason why this had knocked him for a loop.

The last part about being wrong got his back up though - he only WISHED that his Sight was wrong. "It's not wrong." he almost snapped, his true self nearly there. "I see what happens, and I've seen us and it's going to happen."

"Seers can be wrong," Zacharias informed him tartly. "In fact, Divination, in general, is a whole lot of rubbish." There were only a handful of real Seers out there after all. And who said Merlin was one of them? "Just because you claim to have the Sight doesn't mean you do. You could be making all this up." For all he knew at least.

Although he had to admit, he liked the vigour that sprung into Merlin when he accused him of being wrong. Why, he snapped at him! So he had some backbone after all.

"Well what did you see then, hmmm? If it's about me, I have a right to know."

Merlin shook his head, expression dark; he had no gift - he was cursed. It worked each and every time and he could never, ever stop it.

"I don't Divine anything. I don't have a choice. Do you think I'd BE here if I thought I had a choice about it, if my... stupid feelings didn't lead me here?" He stood up, angry because he was strangely hurt, and not so strangely offended. The blight had screwed his life and now Zach was telling him it was nothing more than the fairground shill he had peddled it to be? That stung. "You know what, if it's such a pile of crock then forget about it."

He got up and walked out, knowing it was the wrong thing to do but too angry to listen to the niggling feeling, knowing it would overpower everything he did until he obeyed it later but not thinking about those consequences right then.

Zacharias slapped a hand down on the table, and pushed back his own chair. "Oh no you don't," he said with a shake of his head, his blue eyes narrowing as he watched Merlin leave the shop. He huffed out an impatient, frustrated noise of exasperation, and then followed, leaving his scone and drink mostly untouched.

He pushed through the doors, dodging a woman who was coming in, and then caught up to Merlin outside. Literally, because he reached out and tangled his fingers into the back of the other man's shirt to catch him.

"Stop walking," he said. "Honestly, are you this uppity over everything? If you saw something about me, I want to know what it was. So, out with it."

Merlin didn't know that Zach had followed him until he felt a hand tug his shirt; he jumped and fought to pull away, his heart racing. "Let go of me!" he said, insistent and sharp with something that wasn't all anger.

He'd had enough of being followed back in the Muggle world - being approached like that from behind didn't make him feel particularly comfortable, and then there was the fact that he thought Zach was going to deck him.

Hearing that extra note of.. something, Zacharias releaed the hold he had on him right away, letting his arm fall back to the side. He didn't leave though, but rather just stood there, and arched his eyebrows in a pointed, questioning manner.

"Well?" he asked him. "Are you going to tell me or not? Because really, you ought to. Honestly, whatever it is, it can't be that bad."

Merlin tucked back into himself, all wrapped up in his arms as though that would protect him.

"You take it." he said, his voice cold and shaking. "You take it from me and then, then we're wrapped together somehow, but I don't, I can't see how. I don't know how it works. And I don't know how it ends."

"I take it," Zacharias replied, and he had absolutely no idea what Merlin was talking about. What was it with Seers and not making any sense? That Trelawney twit had been the same - not that he had even bothered to take Divination, but he had seen her about the castle.

"I take what, Merlin," he said, and he sounded more gentle than even he realized was possible in that moment.

Merlin didn't want to say, but it had been in his head enough that he didn't blush as he looked around, took a step closer and said it. "My virginity. You take it from me." All he saw was his hands fisted in the sheets, a moan, a small sound of pain... and Zach Zach, all over it, his psychic fingerprints everywhere.

Oh.

I see," Zacharias said, somewhat taken aback by the news, and requiring a moment to gather his wits about him. So Merlin wasn't afraid that he was going to attack or injure him. He was afraid because he was going to.. ravish him?

"Well then. Well." He wasn't sure how he felt about that, but it was the future and Zacharias wasn't going to worry about things that hadn't even happened. A little smile hinted at the edges of his mouth. "Well then," he said again, his voice slowing, turning more velvety. "You really needn't be so frightened then, Merlin Toke. Because I don't force people to bed with me. Which means, if you do... it will be because you want to."

Merlin chewed at his lip til it bled. Zach's strangely subdued 'I see' just drove the nail of anxiety further into him and he shifted, wishing the pressure against his chest would just ease off, just for a minute.

He didn't say anything, couldn't say anything more, could only wait to see what would happen next, for once unaware of what it would be. The answer he received had been far from what he was expecting and he shook his head immediately. "No I won't." he said, with as much conviction as if he had Seen that - he hadn't, he just knew it to be true. He'd never do that willingly, he didn't want to.

"Excuse me?" Zacharias asked him, and he folded his arms over his chest and looked very displeased at that moment. He was sure Merlin didn't mean to imply what he was implying - or perhaps he did.

"You've quite a talent for being insulting, do you know that? I should know, as I've quite a talent for it myself," he said, his voice very very dry. "So what you're saying is that I'm going to rape you?" He arched his blonde brows and was curious to see what Merlin would say to that. "Because I can guarentee that would never happen. And I should hex you for suggesting that it would."

Merlin flinched back a little as Zach folded his arms as though he was expecting a hit. He shook his head again as he realised how much he'd offended Zach, but he couldn't deny something that was true all the same.

"No, no, I'm not saying that at all." he said with a wince at the idea. "Just that I don't want it. And I won't, I just won't. I don't know how it'll happen. It just will."

"Then you are saying that," Zacharias corrected. "Because when sex is unwanted, it's rape. You do see the distinction, yes?" His face was forming into a scowl again, because that was one implication that he did not like at all.

"Either you're seeing wrong, or you will want it. There's no other option Merlin Toke, because I do not force myself on people. Believe me, I have no problem finding someone willing to go to bed with if that's what I'm looking for." His upper lip curled in distaste.

Merlin winced again, uneasy at the topic, and he snapped again, frustrated and afraid. "Look, I don't know how it'll happen - I just know I don't want it. But it's going to happen anyway. That's all I know." And maybe Zach wouldn't want it either because a) who would with him and b) Zach didn't seem to like him very much.

It almost made Merlin want to cry.

"You might not want it now but honestly, that doesn't mean you'll never want it," Zacharias said in expasperation. "I can honestly tell you that at this moment, I have no desire to shag you." Not someone who was indiorectly accusing him of doing horrible things in the future!

But he had snogged Merlin, and had wanted to snog him again. He was pragmatic enough to know opinions could change.

And then he saw the expression on Merlin's face. "Oh bloody hell," he sighed, some of his anger deflating. "Don't... don't go getting all sad. You don't even like me, so it's not as though you've anything to be sad about."

That was right, Merlin didn't like Zach, but then he didn't know him at all either, and that was the whole problem really. He'd tried so hard to keep his heart from being hurt - he knew he was strange to not want to fuck until there was feeling behind it, but he had no control over his head, he was going to make damn sure he had control over who he gave his body and heart to.

"When we DO do it." he said, tone sharp because he was hurt. "If it is because I want it, it'll be a mistake."

"You know, by saying that, you're just going to make me want to prove you wrong," Zacharias informed him. Either by showing Merlin that he would want it - or not doing it at all. He wasn't sure which.

"Am I that bloody horrible that it's such a terrible thought that you might actually like me?" he asked him sourly.

"Like you? I don't even know you. You-" stole a kiss from me, pinned me back against a countertop and I don't even know how to handle the memory of that nevermind the things I keep seeing. He didn't say that though because it sounded so wrong out loud. "You don't like me, but you'd still fuck me." he said, but there was a question in that too.

"Exactly. You don't know me and yet you're already acting as though I'm the worst thing in the world," Zacharias agreed sourly. "Like I'm some sort of ogre who's going to club you over the head and drag you back to my cave." Which he wasn't!

He let out a snort then that was far from elegant. "No. I wouldn't. I have no desire to shag you, at all, right now, frankly." While he had shagged near-strangers in the past, he didn't shag people who insulted him!

Merlin didn't even stop to think about how fucked up this all was that the assertion made him relax, albeit just a little.

He looked down at his shoes and then tucked some hair back behind his ear, lost in thought for a second, thought and half-formed impressions of an incident that hadn't happened yet.

"Maybe it's my fault." he said, blurted out before he could stop himself.

Zacharias gave him a rather puzzled look, although he was inclined to agree with him. But since the words were blurted out, he wasn't entirely sure what Merlin was referring to. And given his... slightly odd nature, well, it could be anything.

"What, precisely, is your fault?" he asked him, softening his tone, because Merlin looked rather sad, the way he was examining his shoes.

"The... things that happen between us. If you wouldn't, and you just don't want to... but we DO... then it has to be me. Maybe it's me." he pushed fingers through his hair in an exagerated form of his hair pushing tic.

He didn't need any reason to hate his gift, but if what he was seeing was something that he somehow made Zacharias do, and that it was something to him that he knew he would hate, that terrified him so...

"I wouldn't right now," Zacharias replied in a pragmatic sort of way. "That doesn't mean I wouldn't change my mind in the future. Don't blame yourself for things that haven't happened. That must be exhausting." It was tiring him out and he wasn't even the Seer!

"Look," he said, shifting his weight to the other foot and tilting his head to the side. "The problem here is that you don't really know me, at all. And I don't know you." And so it all seemed hard to believe, what might happen in the future.

"Why don't you let me take you out. For dinner. Say.. Sunday evening. We can talk and get to know one another a bit. And you'll see that I'm not entirely scary." When he didn't want to be, which he didn't!

Merlin shrugged because it was rare that he had visions of himself, but less rare that he beat himself up over his inability to actually change what he saw; he did feel guilty for the bad things that happened that he couldn't do anything about.

Zach's suggestion was possibly more frightening than being pinned against the counter and kissed. Date? A date, didn't Zach just hear what Merlin had said, Zach wouldn't want it and he wouldn't want it. It was probably the worst thing he could think of doing but his heart overrode his head and what he said was, "Yes, I'm going to be free on Sunday."

Zacharias had heard him, and that was precisely why he wanted to take Merlin out. To sit down with him and talk - about things other than visions of what might be, but what hadn't happened yet. He wanted to get to know Merlin.

"Good." He gave a little smile then. And told Merlin the name of a restaurant, and where it was at. "Sunday evening. At seven," he said. He reached out and brushed the tips of his fingers against Merlin's wrist, just a light touch. "I'll see you then." And then, before Merlin could talk himself out of it, he headed down the street.
