Being back
Who: Lyra and Viktor
What: Late night reading
Where: LIbrary, Hogwarts.
When: Evening before curfew
Warnings/Rating: None/Low

Viktor entered the library and made his way through the stacks. It wasn't that he was looking for anything in particular but being back brought back memories most of which were pretty good. During the Tri Wizard Tournament the library had been a really good place to hide from the fans among the students. He had met Hermione there and had found a fast friend in her. Now being back as a professor of all things was a little surreal.

Taking a book off the shelf, Viktor opened it up and ran his finger over the pages and smiled. Tonight wasn't for the past, he needed to find something to keep him busy in his quarters. It wasn't like Hogwarts was a great entertainment centre.

There were invisible charm work around the doors of the library that would alert Madame Pince to those coming in or going out when she was not near the front reference and check out counter. It wasn't Madame Pince, however, that was alerted to anyone slipping in. It was Lyra Moon who had been left to care for the libary duties after the normal school hours. Madame Pince had been taking liberal breaks from her job now that Lyra was working and that meant ending her day early in order to spend the early evening relaxing.

For her health, she assured Lyra.

The young witch closed the book she was reading and pushed herself up to slip out of the office doorway. She saw no one but knew someone came in as a tiny ringing noise in the office told her as such. So, she went about exploring the stacks to see who it was and was preparing herself for yelling at the student out late when she found Viktor.

Those wide blue eyes went even wider and she couldn't help but utter a, "Oh!"

Viktor heard footsteps and looked up in time to see Lyra approach. He was clearly not who she had expected and he gave her a smile.

"Good evening, I hope I haven't startled you. I vas looking for something to keep me company at night. Hogvarts has a very impressive library."

Startled her? No. Gave her a good surprise? Sort of, she just hadn't really expected him to come to the library like they had been discussing. Somehow the idea of him visiting was sort of.. odd. Like he didn't fit. But now she was taking that thought back completely.

Lyra took a couple steps forward, had to tilt her chin up a small amount because she was that much shorter than him.

"Yes, well, you certainly came to the right place... unless you were looking for something to also keep you warm at night and then I might suggest the Hogs Head," she chuckled at her own joke then sighed because she knew it wasn't very funny to anyone but herself.

"Sorry, uhm, I'm Lyra. I think we spoke, over the journals?"

Smiling Viktor nodded, he was content to sleep alone for the time being, it was too much work weeding out the groupies and he suspected that Snape wouldn't appriciate the extra bodies in the castle.

"Tonight is just for reading. It vould be very inappropriate to go to dhe Hogshead at this hour I am tinking."

Giving Lyra a nod, Viktor remembered talking to her. "Dhen it is a pleasure to meet you in dhe flesh. Do you have any reading suggestions? I am partial to fiction."

"You think so? I don't, I think it's the perfect hour for Hogshead, especially considering the weekend means having to avoid students in Hogsmeade so really, the best time to be student free is evening and at Hogshead. But anyway," there she went talking again and probably boring him to pieces at that.

Lyra swept past him and used her index finger to beckon him along.

"Of course I do, do you mind terribly muggle fiction? It's a much wider selection.. far more interesting in my opinion than some of the rubbish these magical authors come up with," and in particular she was thinking of Irving Bradley, but she said nothing about him as Viktor probably wouldn't know who she was speaking of anyhow.

"Tell me, what do you prefer? Mystery? Humor? Romance?"

Viktor frowned. "Are ve allowed to leave the castle during dhe veek? I vould have tought the headmaster vould frown on such activities."

Not that he need to leave the castle to drink. He had stocked up on vodka before coming not sure the English fare would satisfy him.

He hadn't read much muggle fare but he was game to try something new. "Vell, vhy don't ve try for a mystery and if I like it perhaps humour."

Lyra led him through the maze of stacks to the row near the back that seemed to have much newer bindings than most of the other books. All the wizard books looked ancient, even ones that weren't, but half of the muggle books looked like actual muggle books which baffled quite a few students.

She pulled at once that had an older binding, though, and turned to face him.

"The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," and then she went down the row a bit further and pulled out another older looking book.

"And the Count of Monte Cristo, perfect. If you don't like them let me know right away because some books just aren't for everyone and we mustn't force ourselves to read what we don't like, even if they are classics. As for leaving the castle during the week.."

Lyra pursed her lips for a moment.

"I'm twenty-three, if I don't get the chance to spend a few evenings out of this place I'm going to go mad. Surely you don't want to stay cooped up here for the remainder of your teaching career?"

Following Lyra further into the stacks and watched as she started pulling various books from the shelves. He recognized some of the titles but hadn't read them.

"I vill start vith the Count of Monte Cristo, it sounds mysterious rather than Sherlock vhom I know is a detective."

He had to admit that she had a point, being trapped at the castle wasn't his idea of a good time for the entire school year.

"No, not really. I did bring vith me some non approved beverages to help the nights pass faster." Viktor admitted with a smirk.

"Did you?" she couldn't help but feign a gasp of surprise. Lyra lifted her hand over her mouth and arched those dark eyebrows before lowering her hand and offering a cheeky grin.

"Your secret is safe with me, that is if you're willing to share," honestly she was certainly not like her older sister who would've had a fit to hear such a thing. She was more like Lizette, the younger of the older siblings who would've encouraged such tom foolery.

He chuckled at Lyra's reaction to his admission but he did nod. "But of course, you are alvays velome to visit should you have need of a break." Viktor offered.

It was nice to have a castle full of younger people rather than the older professors that had been here his first time.

"So do you haff any secrets you vish to share?"

Did she? Well. Not grand ones like the fact that he was hiding strong liquor in his quarters. Of course, Lyra didn't live on castle grounds so her liquor collection was in the open as a result of such freedom.

Lyra took to leaning against one of the stacks, arms folding over her chest.

"I'm not a very secretive person, should you need to know anything you merely have to ask."

Viktor pondered that for a moment before nodding. "Fair enough, but don't forget you gave me license to do so vhen the time comes Da?"

He tucked the book under his arm. "So vhere do you live in the castle? Just for future reference."

"I certainly won't," though now she was wondering when he might take advantage of her tendency to not lie. She stood straight and stepped around him to lead them back to the front counter.

"Why? Were you planning on making random visits to my quarters? Mr. Krum, how very audacious of you," she teased, turning to walk backward for a moment and grin.

"I don't. I live in Hogsmede."

"You never know, I don't know many people here and some times company is enjoyable." Viktor told her with a shrug.

He was surprised to hear that she didn't live at the school. Viktor had been under the impression that it was required. "How did you manage that?"

She shrugged. "I'm not an actual teacher, and I'm not the real head of the library. I think my hours constitute being only part-time help, really. I think that will change once I start to really take over..." and she sighed, once she reached that front counter she began marking the books with her wand for the checking out.

"Which, lately, seems to be coming far quicker than was discussed."

"Dhen you are very fortunate. Vhile the castle is very nice it can be a little claustrophobic. I suppose I vill get used to it.

Viktor watched as Lyra checked his books out. He wondered if he would be fined if he returned them late. Giving her a confused to.

"Vhat do you mean? The Librarian is retiring?"

As if reading his mind she reached out and tapped his two books with a smile. "No worries, the teachers get a longer amount of time to check out books and the muggle fiction books don't always drive Madame Pince quite as insane as other books."

She shrugged. "Yeah, eventually.. and I'm going to take over."

"Oh good, vith my luck I would be dhe von vhere the librarian is hunting me down to return dhe books." Viktor joked.

He wondered if Lyra was not happy about the eventual promotion. "Is dis not vhat you vant? To become Head Librarian at Hogvarts?"

It wouldn't do for her to have to take on a job she didn't want.

"Mm, well, don't keep them out too long.. or I will hunt you down," she arched an eyebrow and smirked, then pushed the books toward him.

"Oh, well.." Lyra tilted her head and rubbed at her neck before tucking a strand of black hair behind her ear.

"I do, but I was under the impression I'd have a good.. year, at least, to ease into it. Lately though... lately Madame Pince has been taking a lot of time off. Keeps saying it's for her health and I don't mind, it's just scary, you know?"

Viktor smirk and gave her a look daring her to do so. Granted she did know the castle better than he did so she had the advantage.

He listened as she explained the situation. it did sound a little tricky. "Did you know she vas ill before you took on the job or do you tink that dhat she is just taking advantage of you being available?" Viktor couldn't think of any other reason Lyra should doubt her ablities.

That smirk made her blush for a moment and she understood, for a split second, why witches would fall for this man. He had a very charming spirit, actually. But that only made her think of Tristan which only made her flush more. Lyra dropped her gaze.

"No.. uhm, and I don't think she's really ill. She's just.. tired. Old, looking forward to retirement. I guess I will be fine, she is very protective of this place and wouldn't hand the reigns over like this if she didn't think I could do it."

Nodding Viktor leaned against the desk. Who knew how long Madam Pince had been working at Hogwart, perhaps she was just tired.

"Vhy don't you have faith in yourself? Clearly she trusts you since she's villing to step aside for you." He pointed out with a smile.

Lyra sighed and rested her cheek against the palm of her hand.

"I do, I mean.. I will, it'll just take some time, I think," she paused and stood up a bit straighter.

"You're very easy to talk to, you know. Thank you."

"Vhy voulnd't I be easy to talk to? I'm no different from any odder man." Viktor assured her, he was used to the hero worship that happened with groupies and he didn't want that to happen at Hogwarts.

"You vill make a good librarian. It just takes time."

"I don't know.. some people you can never tell if they'll be easy conversationalists or not," she stepped backward.

"Dhen I guess you vill know for next time should you need somevone to speak to." Viktor told her with an easy smile.

Chuckling in defeat, Viktor picked up his books and started to back away from the desk.

"Very vell, Madam Librarian. The offer for a drink alvays stands."

"Maybe some other time," before she slipped away into her office.
