Who: Stephen Cornfoot and Su Li
When: Tea and Sympathy
Where: Wednesday early evening before the shop closes.
What: Stephen offers to read Su's palm and the two catch up!
Rating: PG?
Open/Closed: Open to Su Li

It hadn't been a very productive day, in Stephen's opinion, merely because he had done less fortunes and more tea serving than anything else. He didn't like pressuring customers into getting readings but honestly, what did they think the shop was for? If they wanted to go to a cafe to relax there were plenty other places to go!

Granted, not many of those shops sold the same things they sold. Coffee, yes, but flavored teas of all sorts? Teapot and cup sets? Teas boxed up for brewing at home? Tarot cards? Crystal Balls? They had it all! Stephen had been counting and taking inventory of the Tarot cards when the chime of the door being opened signaled him to turn around and greet the customer.

"Ah, welcome to Tea and Sym- Su!"

Su had never been to Tea and Sympathy before, but this was only just now striking her as odd. She liked tea. Very much. Divination? Well, it had never been her strong suit, and she never did take the course at school - at the time she was having a difficult enough time choosing between everything she wanted to take, and it didn't seem exactly practical. It still seemed like more of a novelty than anything else, but there were often times when Su wished she possessed the so called "Second Sight" when it came to, say, locating Merton Graves or foreseeing any possible PR disasters.

As she entered the shop, she heard the tinkling of a bell and the start of a customary greeting. But Su saw Stephen just as quickly as she saw him, and she rushed forward with a wide grin. She didn't even pause to take in the room. There would be time for that.

"Stephen, hi!" Something smelled like incense, though she couldn't pinpoint what kind. "Look at you, all professional." Her eyes roamed over the space around them. "This isn't what I pictured!"

There was a moment of hesitation where Stephen didn't know whether or not to shake her hand or give her some sort of big hug. He wasn't against either and he was certainly okay with whatever she gave him but she didn't do anything either. So, he decided to make the first move and close the gap between them.

After all, they were housemates and practically family for the six years he was at Hogwarts. Stephen towered over her (as did most people, he supposed)then stooped a bit to give her a rather warm hug as a greeting. When he released her he took two steps backward and gestured toward the shop with a smile.

"Oh this? It used to be sort of a joke, to be honest. Not quite welcoming enough.. just a bit odd but Madame Cake has given me the reigns and I've set about making it more acceptable to the younger crowds."

He shook his head and clicked his tongue against his teeth. "Not enough people take the fortunes seriously, which, speaking of... what sort of tea shall I brew for you, Miss Li?"

"D'you have anything with peppermint?"

Su had never been a very touchy-feely sort, so the hug at first took her by surprised. But the feeling passed quickly. It was the sort of thing old friends did after they hadn't seen one another for a long time. What would she have done, shake his hand? That was far too formal. This was Stephen Cornfoot, for Merlin's sake, not the Minister for Magic.

Taking in their surroundings more attentively, now, Su plucked up a tiny teapot from a table to her left and inspected it closely. It was far too small for anyone to actually use, unless mice enjoyed taking afternoon tea these days. "How long have you been working here?"

"Sure!" Did they have anything with... please, they had everything and if they didn't have it he'd make the closest thing to it and use cooking charms to add taste, if he could.

Stephen allowed her to wander around the empty store as he set about preparing the tea. He was using a combination of magic and his own hands to work at the tea. A flick of the wand had the box of peppermint tea bags flying into his hand and then a flame to sprout up under a kettle. This was all done behind a long bar like area that seemed fitting for an actual pub but instead of their being bottles of liquor on shelves there were tins and boxes of tea leaves and bags, assortments of saucers and cups and tea pots. There were five different areas set up to let kettles boil water and only one was being used at the moment to get her tea going.

He grabbed at a clean cup and as he waited for the water to boil he watched her move about and inspect things. He was pleased with how clean everything was, he was sure she'd approve to.

"Six years almost. Remember how I didn't come back for my seventh year? I was homeschooled, my father made me take the N.E.W.T.s anyway at the Ministry and wanted me to go into the Ministry with him but.. I opted to get my own job and live on my own. It was awful at first, I had to work here and at Scribbilus but... they offered me full time here and moved me up. Madame Cake is rather fond of me, says I have a good gift and that was four years ago. I rather think by the time she passes I'll be, ah.. inheriting. Much to the dismay of my parents.. they think it's rubbish."

Su's eyebrows raised as she listened. Leaving the teapot where she found it, she made her way to the bar and took a seat near the center of the counter. This place was making her smile. And to think how many times she'd walked right by! It was good to hear that Stephen was doing well - his absence their final year had been just one of the many things to go wrong back then.

She nodded, then shrugged. "That's just silly. This is fantastic, really, and it's something you're good at. What, would they rather you be miserable in some Ministry office?" Straightening up, Su stuck out her chin in a subconsciously defiant gesture. "I, for one, am quite impressed Mr. Cornfoot."

Stephen's cheeks went hot, hot, hot. Su Li was impressed? Well, goodness. He wasn't really trying to please anyone but himself and the customers but those who didn't really adhere to this sort of place and still liked it? That was a compliment that really did him in!

Stephen, flustered for a moment, turned on his heel to inspect the boiling kettle and busy himself in pouring the boiling water in a teapot now full of peppermint tea leaves. He turned back around to let that seep and leaned on the counter before her.

"Thanks, that's... well it's nice to hear I have some support. I mean, of course I have support it's just... ah, anyway. So how are you? What have you been up to?"

"You're welcome," Su chirped, barely noticing that her compliment seemed to have momentarily turned Stephen incoherent. Her eyes rested eagerly on the pot of her tea. It had been too long since she'd had a good cup. Usually she just used the little bags she or Anthony picked up at the grocer's. It seemed like a travesty when she really thought about it, but she was too busy most of the time.

"I'm doing well. Really well, even." It wasn't meant to sound boastful, though Su knew she had a tendency to do so anyway. She was just very pleased with how her life was going right now, all said and done. "I sort of just took a break after I sat my N.E.W.T.s, if you can believe that. Did a lot of Muggle things, some waitressing, got my blackbelt..." She trailed off for a moment, and gave a small smirk. It felt odd to talk about herself, suddenly. Maybe the unfamiliar environment.

"But eventually I ended up getting this publicist job for the Weird Sisters, which was sort of a nightmare trying to get set straight for a while. It's been excellent, though. Really exciting. And busy. Do you know how insane musicians are?"

"Really, really well? That sounds exciting.. and, no. I, fortunately, do not know how insane musicians are. You work with the Weird sisters don't you? I swear one of them commented on my journal the other day and I about had a heart attack. I know I shouldn't be so.. fanatic, I just can't help it!"

Finally a fresh, steaming hot cup of tea on a saucer was placed before her. He took a step back and glanced over his shoulder to a couple of glass jars filled with fresh biscuits. He glanced back to her.

"And I just baked gingersnaps and chocolate dipped gingersnaps that go well with that, would you care for any?"

Su's eyes widened, and for an instant she looked rather childish. Even as an adult her sweet tooth hadn't left her. If anything, it had gotten worse and she'd had more opportunities to expand her palate.

"Ooh, yes, please." As Stephen attended to the gingersnaps, Su blew on her tea carefully. The steam rising out of it dissipated briefly before being replaced by more. A few more blows, and she sipped tentatively. Even before tasting it, she could tell it was going to be good - even just the smell of peppermint was oddly cooling.

Very pleased, Su grinned and sat back, her head tilted inquiringly. "Do you remember who it was?" she asked, returning to the subject of the Weird Sisters. "I swear some of them spend far too much time on those things."

Pleased with how she responded to the biscuits he eagerly turned about to gather a couple of each for her. He wasn't a bad baker but he didn't know if he was grand and her opinion would do him some good, honestly. Using his wand to levitate the biscuits he directed them to her saucer and gently maneuvered them down.

"No, I don't, I could look but.. it wasn't much, just a bit of a comment about my abilities to uh, predict certain things. Speaking of, are you ready for a reading? Still wanting your palm looked upon?"

The teacup to her mouth again, she merely nodded and replaced it on the saucer, nudging the bicuits aside a little. She picked one up and took a bite as she placed her right hand on the table, palm up.

"Is this right?" she asked, referring to her hand. Su wasn't sure if there was some sort of official procedure with these things, or if her needed her other hand, or if it mattered at all. "By the way, this gingernsap is really good. Has a nice spiciness, sort of." Being a completely hopeless cook herself, Su always appreciated the efforts of others.

Stephen didn't touch her palm at first. He merely stared at it, though not as if it were diseased or something. Really he was just getting a good look at the size of the hand, the shape of the fingertips, the way the four different lines of the palm broke or didn't break, how long they were. Eventually Stephen did reach for her hand but he was so incredibly gentle that his fingertips placed barely any pressure on her skin.

His dark eyes flickered up and crinkled at the corners when he smiled. "Thanks, you should try my chocolate chip cookies, they're Stephanie's favorite..." he didn't even think she might not recall who Stephanie was.

His eyes lowered and he began tracing her different lines with his index finger.

"You have a good, long life line.. that means vitality, energy. Hmm... interesting, interesting."

Nonchalantly, Su continued to munch and drink with her free hand, as if nothing at all out of the ordinary were going on. It was interesting to watch Stephen work, and not at all like the theatrics she was expecting. At school, she often heard about Professor Trelawny's overblown antics in the classroom, and had come away with the impression that Divination almost always included a certain dramatic element. This was different. Stephen was so quiet and still for a while that Su wondered if he'd fallen asleep.

When he finally reached forward and spoke, she was mildly surprise. "Hm? Oh, is Stephanie your girlfr-" Su stopped mid question when Stephen's voice interrupted, and she realized that maybe she wasn't supposed to speak. But that idea was quickly swept aside by his cryptic words. "What's interesting?" She smirked, a little alarmed. Was she supposed to be alarmed?

He didn't quite catch what she had almost said about Stephanie and even if he had he might've just laughed it off. Stephen had never given much thought to his relationship with Stephanie being anything similar to a romantic one, though had the thought been planted he might've.

He used both hands now, one steadying her palm and the other exploring the palm's lines and bumps gently. He glanced up again, eye brows furrowing.

"You have small hands, do you consider yourself an introvert? But long hands, you're quiet, sympathetic, nothing new to hear I'm sure but..." he hesitated, index finger drawing circles on the pad of her thumb.

"How is your mother?"

His fingers on her palm tickled a little, but was also relaxing, and Su wondered if that helped the process along. She'd never thought of herself as introverted, nor quiet. And she was fairly sure no one would ever describe her as sympathetic, though she liked the think she could be, in her own way. The mention of her mother made her stop mulling over these ideas.

"My mother?" Su had been home a few weeks ago to spend the weekend, and everyone had seemed fine then. Fen was getting ready for her last year of school, and had hardly been home because of football practice. But both of her parents were as normal as ever, her mother trying to push off half a closet full of new clothes on her. Su frowned and said, almost defensively, "She's fine."

That defensive wall thing happened more than Stephen could even recall. People were more nervous about bad readings than anything else and to bring family into the picture was down right frightening at times. More than once Stephen had to continue a reading at the insistence of the customer even though the news was dreadful.

But Stephen wasn't seeing anything dreadful here, actually he was seeing two very distinct signs but it wasn't just in her palm. There was something about Su's magic that was giving Stephen the urge to congratulate her, something that suggested change in a familial role and not in just herself.

"Yes, of course, I mean.. er.. has anything changed with her health recently? In a good way? I mean.." it was difficult to explain that Stephen read more than just the physical palm. He read whole auras in any reading and hers was starting to pulsate in a funny way.
