He let out a breath, not realizing he'd been holding it in, and looked down at the food that she'd given him, "Thank you. I am not used to someone else helping me like this," he said, gesturing to the food, "But it looks really good," he added, as he picked up a piece of fruit and popped it in his mouth. He took a sandwich in his hand and folded his legs so that he was sitting more comfortably, and not leaning towards her.
The beach was quiet, peaceful even, as they sat under the shade of the umbrella together. He ate quietly, but with some gusto, finding himself hungrier than he realized. And he could eat more these days; the work outside gave him a far better appetite than when he'd been in school. He started in on his second half before he spoke, enjoying the even silence between them, a bond of companionship seeming to form there.
