Who: Lucius Malfoy & Alecto Carrow
What: Scene lottery! In a public place, someone loses something important to them and the other helps, or hinders, in finding it.
Where: Knockturn Alley
When: This evening
Warnings/Rating: TBA

It was a sad fact that it was hard to come up with a proper engagement gift when, upon marriage, the bride- and groom-to-be would be coming into possession of a fair percentage of one's material belongings anyhow. But, after a couple of fruitless expeditions, Lucius had finally found something that seemed worth giving - in Knockturn Alley, of all places, where he had deposited another considerable portion the old family heirlooms some years ago. Coming out of the shop, he tried to find some way to fit the unwieldy, oddly-shaped box into one of the pockets of his robes. After quite a lot of shuffling he gave up, and made for the mouth of the street with the package tucked under his arm, instead.

It was only when he was about to merge back into Diagon that he realized there was a weight missing. With a quiet curse he dug through his pockets again and confirmed that the chain that usually latched his pocket watch was swinging empty. He turned on his heel and began to retrace his steps. It must still be somewhere, hopefully not very much stepped on. He doubted anyone would try to steal it, even here - hard to fence something when it had a family crest etched on.

Alecto Carrow was one of those seedy characters who frequented Knockturn alley, of course, she didn't look like most of the old crones and hags that lingered in the alley, but she did fit the personality. Sketchy, secretive and sneaky. Stepping out of Arachnida for some fresh air and a brief walk, Alecto tugged the black hood of her cloak a little closer to those unrecognizable features.

She was about to head out to Diagon Alley had it not been for something shiny catching the sunlight off to the side of the alley. Tilting her head slightly, she moved quickly to scoop up the shiny object into slender fingers. Dark gaze studied the crest etched into the cover. She knew that crest from somewhere but where?

Pushing her hood back, she shook blue curls out of her eyes as she held up the watch to catch the sunlight once more. It was a very nice watch, perhaps Amycus would like it. It didn't matter to Alecto that the family crest was on there, it was still a shiny piece of gold. Flicking open the cover to looked at the face of the watch as the second hand ticked past the three. It must have been expensive. Who could have dropped such a thing?

Ah well, it didn't really matter now. It was her watch.

Lucius stopped a few paces away from the woman stooping over the pavement; he didn't really care to run into any of the locals, here - helpful as they sometimes were, they did have a certain flavor. But the glint of gold in her hand when she stood had him striding up to meet her with a polite, if rather cold, smile.

"I beg your pardon," he said, extending his hand, half to block her way and half to invite an easy return. "I've just been looking for that. Thank you for picking it up - I wouldn't have liked to see it scratched too badly." It was always better to begin by granting the benefit of the doubt, wasn't it? No need to provoke a confrontation.

Alecto stood upright the moment the voice called out to her. A brow lifted curiously as a flicker of recognition came across her dark gaze. OF COURSE, she should have seen that all along. Lucius Malfoy. It was the Malfoy family crest. With the watch dangling from her fingers, she flicked it slightly with her other hand.

"Oh...?" Alecto made sure to mask her voice. The one thing she could not change about herself. Not matter how much she tried to change it, that was something that refused to change. Even while attempting to hide her typically scratchy, raspy, wheezy voice there was still something oddly recognizable to her. Was it that sly maddening smirk? Or the sparkle in that dark almost black gaze of hers? Whichever it was, it was sure to spark a moment of recognition in Lucius - though, it would be difficult to pin point exactly WHY this woman looked familiar.

"Is this yours? Such a pity, such a pity..." Tsking disdainfully, Alecto wrapped her fingers around the watch. "Now why would you go and toss a pretty, shiny thing like this away?" Was she taunting him?

Lucius drew back a little - the only visible sign that he was affronted. She clearly had no idea who he was, else she wouldn't have been toying with him. ... That in itself was frustrating, because he was almost certain he had seen her before - but not in Brogin & Burkes, one of the only stores here he had ever patronized with any regularity. He couldn't place her. Perhaps it had only been on the street, but that didn't seem right.

"I haven't tossed it," he said, resisting the urge to snap. It was possible she was just daft, and arguing with a fool was a good way to waste an awful lot of time. "I simply dropped it. I would be very grateful if you returned it. If you don't mind."

Oh Merlin, Alecto could recognize that notorious Malfoy frustration from a mile away. It just amused greatly, and she wanted to giggle, but instead she allowed her smirk to broaden even more. "Well, that wasn't very nice..." She feigned a pout as she opened her hand to look down at the watch.

"As a matter of fact, I do mind." Hands disappeared into her cloak as she stood up a little more defiantly. "For you see, there are rules that must be followed, one mainly being... I found it, thus it's mine. If you cared ever so much about it you never would have allowed it to drop in the first place." A challenging look was shot towards him. Typical Lucius Malfoy, always some sort of entitlement issue.

She was mocking him. Lucius smiled tightly and took a step forward, loosing his wand in his sleeve. Who the devil did she think she was? He didn't even know her name; what standing did she have to go smirking in alleys and picking up respectable people's possessions? "I don't know what sort of rules you were raised with," he began, his tone deceptively polite. "But I have always been taught that thieving's a little beyond the pale. Proper wizards don't fight over things in the street like dogs. What do you say? I'm sure you've simply made a mistake." Fighting might have been out of the question, but a little unilateral cursing was nothing to turn one's nose up at, especially when someone sorely deserved it.
