“Ugh,” Stepping out of Lazy Sundae’s Sam felt the day’s heat and humidity hit her full force, enough to make her feel like she was going to melt there on the shop’s stoop. She’d meant to walk down to the Siren's Song, check in on her sister, but on a hot day, the cool display in the ice cream parlour’s window had beckoned her. She hadn’t promised Mallory she’d stop round at any particular time so she figured an ice cream break was perfectly reasonable.

Sam grabbed one of the small tables out front, grateful for the umbrella’s shade, and attempted to enjoy her coffee banana sundae. It was the same thing she always got but it was always satisfying and undeniably tasty. On most days it was. Sam paused with the first bite halfway to her mouth when a loud barking echoed down the alley. A large shaggy looking dog careened through the patio, crashing into her table and sending her sprawling. “What the hell!” Sam jumped to her feet and watched the dog chase a squirrel around the patio, barking loudly.
