“Dammit, Chester,” Sam mumbled, climbing the stairs into the dusty, neglected attic. There were few things she disliked more than spending a nice, sunny afternoon cooped up in the attic digging through boxes and making herself sneeze every few minutes. “England wins a few games and now he has to start whinging about digging out his old jersey,” she griped quietly as she surveyed the various towers of boxes around the room, stacked in no discernible order. “Don’t see why he can’t drag himself over and do this himself. Oh, Sammy, I’ve got meetings all week, I don’t know when I’d have time,” she continued, glancing at different labels, mocking her brother’s lame excuse as she searched.
After twenty solid minutes of searching Sam’s attention span started to wane and she found herself getting distracted more and more with each consecutive box. All the boxes she was looking through were from years back, when it wasn’t her and Ginny’s house but Mum’s and Sam still had all her siblings living with her. Years back she and Ginny had gone through and thinned the lot out, getting rid of most of her Mum’s things and passing on stuff she felt Chester and Mallory had no right to store at home anymore. It left a condensed selection just ripe for a afternoon of indulging in nostalgia. Half an hour into her attic excursion and Sam was sitting cross-legged on the wooden floor with open boxes all around her, old photo albums and knick knacks surrounding her.
Underneath a box of quilts, Sam found a long rectangular box she couldn’t remember seeing before. There was nothing written on the outside and no stickers or anything stating what might be inside, just a simple box tied tightly with twine. Sam pushed aside the collection she had surrounded herself with and used her wand to sever the twine, flipping the top off easily. “Oh,” she breathed, eye widening slightly as she grinned excitedly at the contents. She vaguely remembered, once upon a time when she was young, her mother showing her wedding dress to her, along with both the magical and muggle photo albums. But the fact that the dress was still safely stored away in her own attic had never occurred to her.
Sam stood up and held the dress out in front of her, looking at the delicate lace and intricate bead work. The style was simple and even if it had been designed decades ago, her mother had chosen a pattern that managed to look classic rather than dated. Intrigued, Sam waved her wand at a stack of books in the corner, transfiguring them into a full length mirror. She swapped her dress for the beautiful white one and stood in front of the mirror, turning slightly from side to side to check herself out.
Apparating home, Ginny was a few hours earlier than she’d said she was going to be. Sam must be somewhere in the house and Ginny intended on spending the rest of the day in bed with her girlfriend. However, Sam was nowhere to be found. Winding her way through the house, Ginny was about to give up and take a nap when she noticed the attic door open.
Furrowing her brows, Ginny climbed up the stairs, hoping everything was alright. She paused about three steps from the top, spotting Sam on the other end of the attic. Staring at her self in the mirror, Sam was dressed in a wedding dress, older and too big on her, the sight still hitched Ginny’s breath in her throat.
They’d talked about weddings before, about getting married and both of them had agreed that it wasn’t necessary. Neither of them were going anywhere, there was no need to prove that fact with an elaborate ceremony. Yet, watching Sam there, twirling the dress around woke something up in Ginny and suddenly, she wanted nothing more than to actually see Sam in a wedding dress, to stand beside her, in front of all their families and marry her. The thought struck Ginny, starting her and after a few moments of watching her girlfriend, she was able to pull herself away from the sight and slink downstairs, full of serious thoughts.
