Who: Snape & Prof. Wiltingdon (NPC)
What: Firing the Transfiguration professor
Where: Hogwarts, Headmaster's office
When: Today
Warnings/Rating: Wibbling?

If he'd had his way, Severus would have sacked Wiltingdon in October. But staff had been turning over a little more quickly than was usual, in the past few years (completely attributable to outside factors, he was sure) and it looked poorly to switch in the middle of a term. He had managed to hold off until summer - until marks were submitted, even. A true feat of endurance. It had been with great anticipation that he had waited for the soon-to-be-former professor to join him in his office today, finally to put and end to his reign of wibbling incompetence once and for all. He even had a suitable replacement in mind - who, though she was cursed with a particularly obnoxious personality, was a capable scholar, and probably wouldn't allow her classroom to run riot quite as routinely as had Wiltingdon.

Now he fixed him with his most forbidding stare, and tried not to betray how much he was enjoying himself. "You had better pack your things," he said, about as lightly as though he were discussing the weather. "I'm afraid your services are no longer required."

Milton Wiltingdon adored his job. Sure, he let his classroom run a bit to the side of orderly some days - most days - but he thought his students learned, no one complained, they had passed their exams in most cases...

So when he looked at Headmaster Snape - who he'd never quite gotten the hang of - it took him a moment before he laughed, hand clapping on the desk. "Good one, Sir."

Severus didn't blink. His eyes flickered down to where the man had hit his desk, lingered a moment, and then found his face again. "Ah," he said, allowing himself a small smile. "You think I'm joking. I can have the elves clean your quarters out for you, if you require convincing. You will be out of the castle by tomorrow, so that I can begin hunting for someone who can teach Transfiguration. - Do you understand?"

Milton laughed again, but it withered toward the end when Snape looked so... well, so serious. "Oh, Severus, stop having me on..." He sounded desperate this time, and slightly hopeful, like he was trying to get Severus to agree it had been a joke.

"As you wish." He stood, pushing his chair back. "Your possessions will be delivered to wherever it is you've come from. I have business to attend to - if you insist upon staying until someone has to come and uproot you, I won't be held responsible for the consequences. Our new keeper of the grounds isn't known for being terribly level-headed. I should leave under my own power, if I were you." He extended his arm toward the door. "Do go away, Milton."

Milton now seemed to understand, because he was pale and quite unmanfully shaking a bit as he stood. "Severus. Headmaster, I don't understand... I've done such a good job here. I've really..." His eyes were getting a bit read around the edges. "I've grown to really love these students. I think I have a good relationship with them and that they respect..." He trailed off as his voice quaked a bit.

Severus raised his eyes to the ceiling. If there were going to be tears spilled, things were going to become much more unpleasant, very quickly. "You've done a perfectly hideous job. Now that you mention it, it may have to do with the fact that you've spent your lectures attempting to gain the respect of a bunch of adolescent dunderheads rather than lecturing." He lifted his eyebrows. "Do you require an escort?"

"No I don't require an escort!" Milton raised his voice, and when he heard it he immediately quelled, looking a bit frightened now, on top of the fact that he looked like he could still begin crying at any moment. "Severus. What was it I've done? They've learned. They've done well enough on exams..."

"I hope we still strive for a little more than well enough, even if it is deplorable optimism." Severus' lip curled. If tears were inevitable, he might as well make it brief. He planted his hands on his desk and leaned toward the latest casualty. "I don't care, Milton, how much you love your students. I don't like you - and if they do, it's simply because you can be counted upon to let them walk over you. The last thing this pack of idiots needs is someone who spends all his time petting them. We turn out witches and wizards, not contented imbeciles. You're a daft, spineless bit of doormat, and if I have to tolerate you for another two minutes, I won't be held responsible for my actions."
