Visiting Diagon
Who: Remus Lupin and OPEN
When: Late afternoon
What: Checking out the bookshop and maybe stopping for ice cream
Where: Diagon Alley, near Flourish and Blotts

It was too humid and muggy to bother with more lessons for the day, seeing as Gabriel couldn't sit still a moment longer and Remus was quickly running out of patience. Finally, he resigned himself to ending the afternoon's session on basic mathematics and instead offering a trip to Flourish and Blotts to pick out some new work books.

Gabriel, eager to get out of the house, was enthusiastic about the idea and practically tugged his father into the fire as soon as the Floo powder hit the flames. The pair wandered the busy streets of Diagon, with Gabe pressing his small face to the windows to stare at the display of owls at the pet shoppe and to whine a little at the sight of a fantastic new toy at Arbelle's Amazing Amusements. Remus urged him on with the promise of ice cream at Fortescue's before they returned home.

"Professor Lupin!"

It had been an age since she was his student, but old habits died hard. It was with a smile, though, that Mandy greeted her former DADA professor as she came upon him on the street. She'd just left one of the shop girls to close up and was thinking that a little ice cream might sound good or maybe a little shopping, so she was wandering down the street, just kind of browsing a little bit. Seeing a familiar face was a pleasant surprise and she grinned at him as she said hello.

Startled by the name, Remus looked up and tried for a second to place the face.

"Miss Brocklehurst," he said, taking Gabe's hand and approaching his former student. "A pleasure to see you. You can call me Remus, you know. I haven't been a professor for...what, ten years now?"

"Gabe," he said to his son. "This is Mandy Brocklehurst. She was a student of mine at Hogwarts. Can you say hello?"

"Hullo," Gabriel replied distractedly as a street vendor passed with a cart of sweets.

"This is Gabriel," Remus said. "You remember Professor Tonks? This is our son."

Mandy laughed at that. "Old habits die hard, Pro- Remus." She laughed again as she corrected herself. Even after all this time, it was strange to call him anything else.

She smiled even more brightly as he introduced the young boy with him. "Oh, it's lovely to meet you, Gabe," she said, nodding her head as Profess- Remus explained. She remembered that her former professor had been pregnant her last year, though it was something easily forgotten in all the madness of that year.

Gabe smiled shyly and hid behind his father's leg.

"He's six," Remus offered, cupping a hand to his son's head and rubbing it affectionately. "Still a bit shy."

"Anyway, what sort of things are you up to these days?" he asked. "I remember you were quite handy with charms. Perhaps you're with the Ministry now?"

Mandy couldn't help smiling at the little boy's shyness. He was perfectly adorable.

"Oh, he'll grow out of that, I'm sure."

She smiled again and shook her head at his questions. "I thought about applying, but actually I have a shop right down there.." She pointed in the direction of The Velveteen Rabbit. "And a second in Hogsmeade."

"What about you? What are you doing with yourself these days?"

"You own that?" he asked, amazed. "You know, I've walked by a dozen times always thinking I should go in and now I must pay a visit. I try not to go into book shops too often, because I always end up spending too much. We're actually on the hunt for some new work books for Gabe. Perhaps we'll go down and check it out. Are you headed back there now?"

"And as for me," he added. "I'm a dad, mostly. Tonks works days so I mind this one and home school him in his primary school subjects. I write articles and things for a bit of spare cash, too."

"Yeah..." Mandy grinned a little. The bookshop was something she was really proud of and it made her smile when she found that people have noticed it.

She shook her head at his question, though. "I actually just left and was contemplating some ice cream. You should definitely stop in, though. We have some really good children's books."

Smiling again, she nodded as he explained that he was mainly just being a dad. "Articles?" she asked, her curiosity piqued. "Where have you been published? I'd love to read those."

"We will," he agreed with a smile. "And the articles are mostly boring academia. I do a lot of political theory work on civil rights in the Wizarding World. I've got a few articles in 'Polixenes Press' and a couple in 'The Wizard's Penny Philosophy'. I've done a lot of writing for textbooks, too. Mostly basic Defense textbooks and general spell work."

Gabe tugged at Remus' hand with a little whine.

"Are we going to the bookstore?" he asked impatiently.

"Please be polite, Gabriel," Remus admonished. "I'm speaking with Miss Brocklehurst right now. We'll go in a minute."

He offered Mandy a grin.

"Sorry, he's excited to be out and about instead of doing lessons. I think we'll wander down to your shoppe and try to find our books there today."

"Oh, but I like boring academia," she answered with a grin, making mental note of the names he'd rattled off so she could check them out later.

"I can't blame him," she waved off his apologies after the boy's impatient voice sounded between them. "It's a lovely day. No good for being cooped up in lessons."

She didn't want to keep him or to keep the boy standing there when he wanted to be elsewhere. "It's nice to see you Pro.. Remus," she laughed as she had to correct herself. "I don't want to keep you or Gabriel, but I do hope I'll run into you again sometime."

"Certainly," he agreed with a nod. "And we'll be sure to check out your shop."

"Maybe after some ice cream," he added, giving a meaningful look to Gabe. "Have a good rest of your day, Miss Brocklehurst."

Taking Gabe by the hand, he headed off in the direction of Fortescue's, looking forward to a bowl of chocolate fudge swirl.
