Who: Seamus Finnigan (Narrative)
What: Seamus takes his final leap...
Where: Room of Requirement
When: This afternoon
Rating/Status: PG and Closed. (Note: I was bored one day and talked with Bette. Needed to get one of these on the roll to encourage the others!)
To say that Seamus was run down was an understatement. It was getting close to the end of term, and it seemed like all he was doing was studying for his classes (and the approaching NEWTS, though with the current state of things he wasn’t even sure if they’d be happening,) taking care of Fang (which really much of a task but it did require some extra time to explain to their New Evil Professors exactly why he had a dog and why he had to go outside,) but most of all, practicing his transformation. Sometimes he was able to toss in some downtime to spend with Dean, especially now that he barely saw him due to their New Evil Professors and their stance on muggleborns.
The only silver lining in all of this was that, on the recommendation of not only his mother, but some of the younger years that were still attending, was that he was refusing to go to his Muggle Studies class. He didn’t care how much trouble he was getting into by skipping it, or if he would even be able to take his NEWTS in the course, but he was doing his own studying from the true book when he could to keep up with the lessons that they started with. But his mother very strongly advised him to be nowhere near the Carrow's. And for the most part, his mother never strayed him off the beaten track.
Fifth year’s madness with Harry didn’t count.
He wished he could get away with missing Defense against the Dark Arts as well, but that one is more important to the cause. And after hearing about Sam’s encounter with the sister, he figured it was a good thing he stayed away from her angry spew about muggles and muggleborns. At least with DADA, he was learning the spells that he could use against the very person who was teaching them if he had to.
Not going to muggle studies also gave him a little bit of extra free time to practice, because that was probably the most important thing. He was still unsure of what them changing into animals was going to do for them in helping the war and Harry, but he trusted McGonagall and whatever she had planned.
So after he finished up with their now joke of a Transfiguration class, he figured that he was a good time that day to sneak off to the Room and practice while he was in transfiguration mode. He knew the DA wouldn’t be in there, and he still had to tell the rest of the trainees about the room. But it was hard to communicate safely with everyone since their New Evil Professors came to the school.
He took a few back way turns to get up to the Room, did the normal walk in front of the “door”, and walked in. It was set up exactly the way Seamus wanted it – nothing in the room except for one mirror so he could watch himself transform. So far, he’d been able to change his whole face, grow his tail back, and once managed to form the body. Just, not all at once. It’s definitely been weird to watch, but he found that watching sometimes made it easier for him to concentrate on the change.
He dropped his school bag in the corner of the room and removed his top robes and his tie. Seamus rummaged through his bag and found a small bottle of pain potion and downed it with a sour face – it never got easier taking that stuff. Lastly, he set his wand into the bag, not wanting to break it while he practiced.
As he walked towards the mirror, he shook out all of the nerves and bad energy and tightness from his body. He stood about five meters away – enough that he wouldn’t smash the mirror if he fell – took a deep breath, and closed his eyes, concentrating on the change and the magic inside of him.
Silently he cast the spell, pushing all bad thoughts out of his mind. But then he saw images of his friends. Dean, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Sam, members of the DA, the other trainees, his family. As he saw the flashes, they were all dead.
No, he thought. This will never happen. You’re stronger than this Seamus. You and your friends will survive. Harry is going to pull through and everything is going to go back to normal and you’re going to live a normal life surrounded by people that love you. Concentrate Seamus. You can do this.
He felt something weird with his body. Something he never felt before while changing. What was he going to find when he opened his eyes? And why did he have the sudden urge to run around and find some meat and play in the snow when it wasn’t even snowing outside?!
When he opened his eyes, he jumped back and rolled into a ball in fear. Did he just see…
After a moment of settling down, Seamus opened his eyes and carefully walked towards the mirror, tilting his head to the side. All white. Furry. There was the tail! And there was a mark on his back leg from when he fell into a branch while climbing a tree when he was still a lad.
He…he did it! He changed! He really was an animal!
Why can I still hear my regular thoughts and not fox-like thoughts, he said to himself. Have to write to McGonagall about that. Bloody hell I’m an animal! What’s that God awful smell,.
Fox Seamus ran in circles, trying to find the source of the smell. He ran into various corners of the room a few times then finally found it; someone’s old sandwich that got caught in the reset of the Room.
That’s disgusting. Wait…wait what are you doing?! Before his human brain could process what was going on, Fox Seamus was eating the sandwich. Holy moly this is gross. Yet, satisfying at the same time. I hope I don’t eat any bugs.
This was brilliant. He was really a fox! Cute and white and “BARK”. Merlin he could bark!!!
For the next 20 minutes or so, he bounced around the room like a puppy dog, checking out the bare room through his fox eyes, and being completely enamored over the fact that he could run really, REALLY fast.
But his human brain was getting tired. He needed to change back. He needed to tell the rest of the trainees and Dean! Back in front of the mirror, Seamus closed his eyes again, this time groaning as his body shaped itself back into human form. Merlin, that was painful to do all at once. He made a mental note to get some more pain potions.
When he opened his eyes, he squeaked (which, till that point he didn’t even know he could do.) Seamus was back in human form alright. His clothes, however, did not return with his body. “Okay. This is a huge problem.”
He thanked the stars that he became decent at Transfiguration, running to his bag to find anything that he could transfigure into trousers and a shirt. He didn’t even care about shoes at that point, but he was pretty sure he would get thrown in detention for walking around Hogwarts stalkers.
He found a gum wrapper and his now empty bottle of pain potions, which was better than nothing he supposed. Pointing his wand at the items, he conjured a pair of trousers, but was pretty sure that the shirt resembled something that Ginny or Sam would wear.
Not caring, he put on the clothes, gathered up his things, and carefully exited the room, watching as it reset itself. Once he knew that the hallway was clear of New Evil Professors, he ran full sprint for Gryffindor tower, partly out of excitement.
But mostly because he didn’t want anyone to see the obviously low cut top he was currently wearing.
