Puffs on the Run

Wayne walked out of the sandwich shop near the train platforms, carrying a huge bag of supplies purchased with the last of his Muggle money. He scratched at the patchy growth of hair on his face, slightly regretting not stopping in Boots first to get some razors, but he considered that it was better to be well-fed and scruffy than clean-shaven and starving.

The trip had not been quite the adventure he'd expected. He hadn't slept much, jumping at the sounds of rabbits or foxes running through their camps. He hadn't played his guitar much, for fear of getting caught. Everyone had been rather sullen... Except Christopher, who spent most of his waking hours whinging on about his feet or his stomach or the forests...

But speaking of Chris, where the hell were they? Wayne cursed himself for leaving the girls alone--not that they couldn't take care Of themselves, but they were a band on the run, after all. Musketeers. And he was doing a rather poor job of being d'Artagnan by leaving them for a sausage roll and crisps...

"WAYNE!" Megan called as she rushed through the crowd to the boy. Her expression frazzeled and her usual travel satchel missing. More importantly those that were supposed to be with her weren't following behind. As she grabbed Wayne by the arm while quickly explaining, "They've found us! They found us! Oh god! A man came and grabbed Christopher. I pulled him free. He was right there with me.... I apparated down the platform but...he wasn't there when--"

Her hands came to her forehead and paniced tears fell forward. "Oh god, we have to find him! I have to find him!" The Hufflepuff then proceeded to scan the crowd frantically for any sight of the man that had grabbed at them or her brother.

Panic set in as Wayne scanned the crowd. This was what he'd been dreading since they'd left--they were separated now, and easy to pick off. He couldn't see anyone suspicious, or remotely out of the ordinary. Wherever Christopher was, it most likely wasn't in the station.

He wanted to believe that maybe Christopher had made it onto a train, or into the gents' toilets, or somewhere safe. Megan's agitated state meant the chances of that were next to zero. He couldn't Apparate. He couldn't run in this station without knocking down a score of people.

Worst of all, the woman on the tannoy was announcing that their train south was boarding.

"Come on," he said, grabbing for Megan's wrist to pull her through the crowd. "We need to find Eloise as well... The train's going to leave."

The trains going to leave.... At first Megan was ready to do as she was told, but just as quickly as she was to follow she stopped and yanked her hand from Wayne's grasp. "Wayne, We can't leave without him. We have to find him...we--" she explained looking to her friend as though the suggestion were ludicrous. She failed to complete her sentence as she went to scan the crowd again for the young chap. "Christopher!" she called into the crowd in hopes that he'd magically appear despite her knowledge that he wouldn't.

The guilt inside of her was so heavy she was beginning to have trouble breathing. She should have kept better care of him. Paid better attention to what was going on. And to think some minutes before they'd been found she was honestly thanking God that they'd gotten this far without being tracked. They were...so close...and... Merlin, she'd messed up so bad. This was awful.

Wayne tried to reach out for her again, but Megan was gone into the crowd! Already several people deep in. "Jonesie!" he called, but it was drowned out by the shrill tweet of the conductor's whistle. He had to choose--leave Megan and get on the train, where hopefully Eloise was already on board, or leave Eloise on her own and fight through the crowd to chase after Megan.

The announcement came over the tannoy again. Wayne heeded it, casting one last look out for Megan, who was already lost to his eyes. Then he pushed through the crowd--politely and apologetically, like a good English gentleman--and climbed onto the south-bound train, looking now for Eloise, hoping to whatever gods there were that he wasn't alone now.

It hadn't been quite as easy as he'd have hoped to track the errant runaways. Rodolphus was excellent at tracking, could follow a quarry's magic across countries, but muggle towns and their cleverly not using magic as much as they might have... it slowed him down. He butchered for teenagers in a small village near the coast, thinking they were his capture, but they had turned out to be muggles and he had nearly had to start from the beginning again. If they got away... but he wouldn't think about that.

In the end, when he did find them, it was only the youngest boy he caught. He'd found them in Manchester, the train station packed with muggle filth. He'd tracked them there and found them separated, which was a bonus to his hunt, but as he'd closed in on two of them he was sure he'd been spotted when they tried to make an escape. Still, this close, there wasn't much one could do to successful escape Rodolphus Lestrange, and mid-apparation he managed to ensnare one of them. He'd been hoping for one of the girls, but the young man was almost as good a catch as he ripped him away from his side-along partner - his sister, perhaps? - and quickly apparated away with him himself.

He was young, and quite talkative when prompted with the right sort of encouragement. Rodolphus was a very patient man when it came to torture, butr in the end he did not have to be. Half an hour later, his message was sent just to the girl, written in her brother's blood.

He is still alive if you return with me. If not, you murder your brother. I leave the choice to you. Outside the train station in two hours, or your brother dies far more painfully than you can dream.

Megan hadn't thought much of the train leaving. In fact, in her frantic attempt to search for her brother she hadn't even realized that Wayne hadn't chosen to aid her in the search. It wasn't until the locomotive was out of the station and the platform was temporarily cleared did the Hufflepuff notice that she was in fact alone.

After calling for Christopher....then Wayne....then Eloise.... Megan found herself in a confused sort of daze. The muggles around her seemed to notice her initial desperate yells, but thanks to the muggle repelling jumper she wore the potential of starting a scene was understated. Muggles went about their business and Megan, crying, gathered the belongings she'd left behind during the initial escape from Christopher's capture.

Everything was falling apart. How could she have let this happen? How could she have let go of Christopher and..... why had the other two left them behind!? Surely they'd be back right? Surely they'd gone for help? Or perhaps...they'd been captured too! Oh dear god, this couldn't be happening! While searching for the others Megan attempted to use her family two way mirror to contact family members who could help - both her elder brother and father failed to respond to her calls. Which only enticed more frustrated tears.

Finally she'd decided to escape Manchester once an hour long search in and around the station failed her terribly. Megan was in the middle of walking frantically away from the station and debating whether she should attempt apparating to the next town, onto the train south bound, or if she should just make use of the broom she'd been lugging around....when the owl arrived. The words seemed to drown out any thought of getting to family members who could help. They couldn't help. This was her mess and she had to clean it up herself. And if....Wayne and Eloise were already captured...then....well... the point of escaping Hogwarts was pointless now. Her blind loyalty refused to let her carry on with the plan that had been set up for the four them. She wouldn't leave them behind.

She didn't hesitate in her decision. Blind and stupid in her devotion she frantically wrote a reply:

Return to sender: Please, don't hurt him. I'm there now.

Though Megan wasn't entirely certain the owl would make the delivery...she instantly apparated to the front of the station - eager to spot anyone who didn't belong.
