"Mm." He made a noncommittal sound and leaned his head back against the tree trunk. "They're...coming along. I mean, it's hard to find a lot of time, or a place that no one's keeping an eye on, you know?"

Nikolas eyed the cigarette with interest. It made him wished he'd stopped back at the dormitory before coming out. He'd not smoked anything in a while, between not feeling he had the time and greater scrutiny being placed on students. This would have been the perfect moment.

"But I think I'm making progress. It isn't as uncomfortable anymore." He paused, pondering whether he ought to ask his next question. "Can I, er, have one of those? If you don't mind." He made a gesture indicated the cigarette.
