Severus was beginning to wonder whether Malfoy was feeling guilty, or merely worried. Guilt would have been all to the good - remorse could be a very powerful motivator - but it really wouldn't do to let him get too skittish. He didn't think the list itself should be a cause for either, but everything did tend to magnify when one was surrounded by enemies and allies who considered themselves nothing of the sort. It occurred to him that Dumbledore had spent quite a lot of time, at the very beginning of Severus's long career of treason, doing nothing more than soothing nerves. He'd been shamefully jumpy, back then. It was a miracle he'd survived at all.
It helped to have something positive to focus on. He himself had always been as pleased as anything to have extra lessons. He supposed it was unlikely that Malfoy would feel the same way, but this was the extent of his powers of distraction. It would have to do. It also had the benefit of not being a complete waste of time. He waited to let the boy into the office, thinking almost happily that he would have a legitimate excuse to sleep in in the morning.
