Characters: Sam Capper and Ginny Weasley
Setting: Wednesday evening in the Gryffindor Sixth Year Girls' dorm, following Seamus's post.
Summary: Sam attempts to solve the problem of a training location and talks to Ginny
Rating/Warning: Some glomping? That's about it really. Short and safe.
Sam paused with her quill raised over her journal. Ginny had already relayed the news to her from the twins as soon as she'd read the ward and one of her first thoughts had been exactly what Seamus was bringing up. They were all so close and couldn't afford to let McGonagall down now when it was most important. The idea had occurred to her when they went down to the Pitch to practice but that had been, even if it was only a few hours difference, when things were safer. The Room of Requirement was the answer to their problem but to her it was DA territory and she didn't feel right just offering it up.
And then all that shit with Hopkins had gone down... Sam sighed and set her quill down, glancing at Ginny who was lounging at the other end of her bed, brooding. "Gin?" She closed the journal on her quill and set it gently aside. Waiting for her girlfriend's acknowledgement she sat up and used her wand to twitch her curtains shut.
"Mmm?" Ginny grumped in response, arms folded across her chest. She knew it wasn't mature or leader-ly to be sitting here in her girlfriend's bed, in a snit because of what Hopkins had done, but hell, she could be herself with Sam. She could be grumpy and pissed off and didn't have to be afraid of what anyone would think because it was Sam! And Sam loved her, regardless.
The thought cheered her unintentionally and her lips curved in a smile. "I love you," she said, matter of factly, pulling her feet underneath her and staring down the bed. "What's up?" She asked, waggling her eyebrows and pursing her lips in an almost ridiculous way.
"I love you too." Sam scooted down a little, moving closer to the other girl, trying to think of how you start a conversation that was pretty much 'Hey, I've learning to turn into an animal as part of a secret study group with McGonagall but now that everything is going to hell do you mind if we use the DA's space to keep on practising?' that wasn't going to do it.
"This...is important..." She also considered making Ginny promise not to freak out but she was sure that asking something like that would only prompt her to start freaking out. "You know the lessons, with McGonagall?"
At Sam's words, Ginny's brow furrowed. No good conversation ever started with that. She sat back, leaning against the headboard and folding her arms across her stomach. "Yeah?" She asked, careful to keep her voice neutral. "Your secret project? What about it?"
Taking a slow breath in Sam bit back her nerves over the explanation. McGonagall had her terrified of telling, getting kicked out of the lessons or whatever she had planned for anyone that broke secrecy, but things had changed. "She's training us, me and a few others, to be Animagi..." She watched Ginny nervously, biting her lip out of anxiety as she waited a reaction.
At first, Ginny was certain she'd misunderstood Sam. Or that her brain had misfired, and she'd made up what she thought she'd just heard. Because there was no way that Sam could've said Animagi. Ginny gaped and it took a few tries for her to be able to speak. "A... animagi?" she stammered, her eyes wide.
"Mmhmm," Sam nodded slowly, her gaze still intently holding Ginny's as she waited for the other girl to process her news. She still had to get to asking about the Room of Requirement which wouldn't be any easier if she was still shocked over the first admission. "That's why I've been so sore and tired...more tired than usual," she continued, "It usually takes years but we only have months."
Sam hadn't corrected her, or broke into a smile or anything and Ginny shook her head. "Sam," she started, moving up onto her knees, her face still etched with shock. "Sammy," she tried again. There were so many questions crowding into her head, she couldn't figure out what to ask first. "You were right," she finally managed.
Still biting her lip, Sam's confusion at her reaction was plain. "Right?" she repeated, her brow furrowing as she tried to figure out what her girlfriend was talking about.
"When you said I'd be proud of you," Ginny scooted forwards and wrapped her arms around Sam, holding her tightly before pulling back to settle in front of her. There was still a bit of jealousy, sure, that Sam had been chosen and not her, but McGonagall had to have her reasons, besides, there was likely no way she'd've been able to do the lessons in addition to all of her other responsibilities. More important than that though, was a huge feeling of pride and amazement at how lucky she was to have Sam.
Sam felt a rush of emotion and ease when Ginny wrapped her arms around her and she hugged back firmly, not wanting to let go for a long moment. "It's so hard," she said, forgetting about the Room of Requirement for the moment. She'd been dying to talk to Ginny about all of it for so long that there was no way she was waiting a moment longer. "And it hurts even with the pain potions. I never even imagined."
"Oh baby," Ginny pulled Sam to her again, moving her legs from under her and sitting closer to the other girl. "Can you change fully? What are you changing into?" Her mind was still spinning, and she felt like she couldn't quite grasp the thoughts, that it would take a while to come to terms with the fact that Sam, her Sam, was an Animagus.
"Not fully, not yet." She reached out and took Ginny's hand in hers. "I can get the ears and tail, a few whiskers and some fur, and last night I started to get my nose right. But mostly I just still look like me only ridiculous." Even as she joked off her progress she couldn't keep the pride out of her voice at the latest accomplishment. The excitement over her nose had almost been enough to override the pain she felt in it.
Her lips quirked at the next question, even with the serious conversation she couldn't contain a grin when she shared her form. "A weasel."
Still, Ginny didn't know what to say, whether to exclaim at the adorableness of Sam as a weasel (because, while they did tend to be cute, she had it on good authority that they were nasty and although it was tempting to skritch them on their little heads, it was a Bad, Bad idea) or ask more about the training or - "Hang about," Ginny furrowed her brows and stared at Sam for a moment. "What about the whole giant secret thing? I mean, I'm so honoured that you told me, and so so proud of you but... wasn't this supposed to be a secret?"
The small smile faded again and was replaced with a more sheepish expression. "It was," Sam explained, forced back into serious mode. "And it still is! You know you can't tell anyone...I trust you. It's just now that McGonagall is demoted and she's lost control of the school we figured we'd be watched more, everyone would. She won't be able to help us and we won't be able to practice with her anymore...so we need a safe place..."
The penny dropped and Ginny nodded. "You want to use the Room." Her face matched Sam's as she thought. Her initial reaction was to say yes, this was Sam, this was important! But with what Fred had told her about the tunnel to the store, she was a little hesitant. "You'd said there were more people in the group?" She asked, absently stroking Sam's hand with her thumb. "Who else?"
Anxiety rising again, Sam's thumb moved back and forth over Ginny's hand quickly, acting out her nerves. "I didn't want to use it without checking with you," she explained, hoping Ginny would understand their predicament. "There are eight of us. Two from each house, one sixth year and one seventh," she hesitated again when it came time to name names. She could out herself, that was one thing. And even telling about the group and their purpose was still alright. But she couldn't quite convince herself it was okay to out everyone else. "Seamus is also in. McGonagall chose us all personally..."
At the mention of each house, Ginny's face dropped, her expression steeling. "Sam," she heaved a sigh and frowned. "I... what about the tunnel? To the twin's shop? How do you know they can be trusted?" The Room wasn't hers, she knew, but with Fred and George's addition, it sort of had become hers to protect.
Ready for the anti-Slytherin hurdle, Sam shook her head quickly. "The tunnel can't be there all the time though, right?" She'd had the magic of the Room explained to her, it gave you what was required. And if it was access to the tunnel it was access to the tunnel, if it was training space it would be training space. "No one else has to know about the tunnel. And if you know when were there we won't have to worry about other DA members." She watched her thumb for another moment before adding, "I don't know where else we could meet. We used the Pitch last night but that was just a couple of us and there weren't extra eyes in the castle looking out for this sort of thing."
Squeezing her eyes shut, it took Ginny a moment to come to a decision. She had to DA to watch out for, as well as Fred and George, but she could never say no to Sam. "Just... watch them, okay?" She said finally, shoulders drooping slightly, unsure if she'd made the right decision.
Relieved and excited at her answer, Sam promptly let go of Ginny's hand and threw herself forward, tackling her girlfriend to the bed. "Thank you, Gin! I know what this means, honest, thank you thank you!"
As per usual, Ginny couldn't keep the worry on her face when Sam was hugging her. "Yeah, yeah," Ginny grumbled, smiling through the pout in her tone. "You owe me, Capper."
