Heath sodding loved Queen. Freddie Mercury's death might have been the one thing he shared with his father as one of the saddest moments of both of their lives, and he'd actually put up with his step-mother of the month for a whole bloody night when he'd gone with them to the Tribute concert for Mercury at Wembley Stadium in 1992. Why he hadn't thought about Queen when he'd thought about those songs was beyond him, but now he was loving it and he'd made his way through "A Kind of Magic" for the second time that night -

The bell that rings inside your mind
It’s challenging the doors of time
It’s a kind of magic

- when he stopped and turned to Orsino behind the drums. "Maybe slow it down even more through that bit? Should be haunting at hopeful at the same time, yeah?" The hardest part of doing a full cover album was going to be making it still sound like them. Then again, tossing in the lute and the bagpipes generally did the trick, after they rocked a few of the songs on the list up a bit.

Orsino stopped the beat short and sat back a bit, one hand still hovering over the ride cymbal. He was just really excited to be playing again, not just for the hell of it - they were going to record again. This was always the best part, for him. Hashing the sound out, experimenting with the structure; it was much less public, really, which was probably a good deal of the appeal to him. And anyway, he was sort of glad they'd liked his idea to do covers.

He nodded at Heath's suggestion. Perhaps in his eagerness he was speeding the song up a bit. And it would sound different, later, when they incorporated everything.

"Yeah..." Orsino said, biting his lip and doing a quick roll on the snare. He stretched his arms out behind him and heard his shoulders pop. Even after years of playing, he was always surprised at how tight he could get in the midst of a session. He went back into the beat, slowing the tempo somewhat. "More like this, then?"

Heath swayed a bit on his stood with the new rhythm, then nodded. "Aye, like that, and maybe we'll have a little asymmetry. Have some frenzied bits with the guitar during that instrumental section we tossed in...."

Heath liked that idea, and it made it seem more like themselves, somehow. He had no qualms about fucking with a classic, and after a minute he launched back into the song in the new rhythm.

"This rage that lasts a thousand years
Will soon be, will soon be
Will soon be gone...."

As a singer he wasn't bad, but he wasn't Myron.

Admittedly, Queen had never been a favorite of Orsino's. He understood why they had such a loyal fanbase and liked their music well enough, but they weren't one of his go-to bands when he needed to just clear his mind. But there was a thrill in seeing just how fluid a song could be. It wasn't long before he'd gotten back into the music and wasn't giving much conscious thought to what his hands and feet were doing - he knew the sound he was going for, and it seemed to be enough. It was better not to over think playing.

He threw in a longer fill, striking one of the crash cymbals with more strength then he'd intended. This set of sticks had been an older one, but it didn't stop him from being startled when the one in his left hand snapped clear in two. The top half went spinning off to the side. Orsino made a strangled sound and choked the cymbal, then chuckled.

"Er. Yeah, we probably shouldn't make that part of it," he observed, reaching into the bag next to him and rummaging for a replacement pair. "Don't think we're going the 'experimental' direction."

Heath stopped abruptly at the break, and then found himself laughing. "Don't know, could get you those that glow in the dark and we could make a game of it. Find the pieces of Thrusty's sticks, win an autographed picture of him, or something. Your fanclub girls would risk their necks to be on the floor looking."

He finished laughing at the idea, then snorted. "But if you think I'm smashing a guitar on stage, you're out of your sodding mind. Did you bring extras?"

"Yeaaahh," Orsino said slowly, frowning and pulling the bag up into his lap. He always had an extra pair or two for this sort of session, but somehow they'd wound up buried on the bottom tonight. Finally extracting two new sticks, he tossed the bag back down, along with the unbroken stick from before. It was hardly the same of smashing a guitar, he thought. More like breaking a string - somewhat inevitable and always annoying.

Tapping them against the rim of one of the toms, he raised an eyebrow. "That idea sounds lovely, really. Top notch. Can't imagine why we haven't done that at every show."

"Really I just like any ideas that are likely to get you mobbed by women," Heath teased, and he knew quite well that being mobbed by anyone wasn't exactly Orsino's idea of the best time in the world.

"Which one did you want to work through next? I think we know what we're doing there."

"It's not as though any of use getting mobbed by women is an unusual occurrence," Orsino replied frankly but grinning in spite of himself. "Wonderful fun, every time."

He twirled one of the sticks, considering Heath's question. "Hmm...dunno. Maybe 'I Put a Spell on You'? I'm sort of looking forward to that one."

"I'm looking forward to Myron trying to sing that one," Heath countered, snorting, but he pulled up the stool he sometimes sat on to play and changed a few of the settings on his amp. "I'm not going to try the vocals, but we can go through it a few times. What were you thinking?"
